Choose cat furniture by watching how your cat climbs, rests, hides, and scratches, then match those habits to the space you can safely provide. A cat tree is useful for a cat that seeks height; a covered bed may suit one that retreats into enclosed spots; and a scratcher should match both the direction and surface your cat already prefers. Stability, placement, and easy access matter as much as the furniture category.
Start with your cat’s habits and your usable space
Cat furniture can provide some of the resources cats need at home, including elevated territory, safe resting places, and scratching surfaces. Veterinary guidance from the Feline Veterinary Medical Association and AAFP identifies safe resting places and vertical space as important parts of an indoor cat’s environment. The FelineVMA’s 2025 indoor-cat position statement also emphasizes safe places and separated resources.
Before shopping, observe where your cat already spends time and measure the area you can actually use. Consider traffic through the room, the cat’s usual routes, and favorite sleeping or window-watching spots. There is no universal furniture footprint that fits every home, and the guidance does not set a required size for a tree or perch.
- Looks for height: Consider a cat tree, shelf-style perch, or other secure elevated resting place.
- Chooses enclosed retreats: Look for a covered resting spot or hide the cat can enter and leave comfortably.
- Prefers open resting places: A bed or open perch may be a better match than an enclosed structure.
- Scratches furniture or flooring: Note the direction and material before choosing a scratching surface.
Choose the furniture type that meets the observed need
Cat trees and perches for climbing and watching
A tree or perch can add elevated territory and resting positions. Choose a footprint that fits the room without blocking regular routes, and make sure the cat can reach and leave the resting spots easily. Guidance supports providing vertical space; it does not endorse a particular commercial design.

Covered furniture and hiding places for retreat
If your cat regularly settles in boxes, under furniture, or in other enclosed spots, a covered bed or hide may offer a familiar kind of retreat. Safe places are part of the environmental needs described in the FelineVMA’s client guide to helping cats feel secure. Let your cat’s behavior, rather than the product’s appearance, determine whether an enclosed style is likely to suit.
Scratching furniture matched to direction and surface
Scratching is normal feline behavior. The AAFP Feline Behavior Guidelines recommend a sturdy post, with enough height for a full stretch when a cat scratches vertically. Some cats scratch horizontal surfaces instead, so a flat scratcher may be more appropriate.

Watch what your cat scratches now. Wood, sisal rope, and rough fabric are commonly preferred substrates in the AAFP guidance, but an individual cat’s demonstrated choice is the most useful clue. Place the new surface near a favored scratching location, such as a place the cat already uses, a sleeping area, or a window-side spot. The FelineVMA Positive Reinforcement Training Educational Toolkit also recommends putting suitable posts or trees where scratching occurs.
Furniture protectors as an adjunct
A commercial sofa protector can help shield upholstery, but it should not replace an acceptable scratching surface. Pair it with a sturdy post or tree in a location where the cat already scratches, as recommended in the FelineVMA toolkit.

Check fit, stability, and placement before buying
Product dimensions, assembly needs, and construction vary, so check the specific listing and manufacturer instructions rather than relying on category labels. The veterinary guidance cited here does not establish a shared load rating or certification standard for cat furniture.
- Measure the available floor area and the height clearance for the intended location.
- Check the listed dimensions and assembly requirements for the exact item.
- Assess whether the assembled furniture appears stable and follow the manufacturer’s setup and placement instructions.
- Position it where the cat naturally rests, watches, or scratches, without obstructing household traffic or the cat’s route of access.
- For scratchers, verify that the surface orientation and material resemble what the cat already uses.
Plan for access in a multi-cat home
In a home with more than one cat, furniture is part of a wider set of shared resources. The FelineVMA’s security guidance notes that resource sharing depends on the cats’ relationship, and its environmental framework calls for key resources to be multiple and separated. Observe whether each cat can approach, use, and leave a perch or scratching station without being challenged. A single shared tree may work in some households, but there is no universal number of trees or perches that suits every group.

Where cats avoid one another or compete for access, distribute resting and scratching options rather than putting every resource in one station. The goal is practical access for each cat, not simply having a particular number or type of products.
Make the choice from behavior, not product type
A cat tree is not automatically the right answer for every cat, and a scratching post does not replace a need for a quiet retreat or elevated space. Start with the behavior you want to support, choose a form that fits both the cat and the room, and place it where the cat is most likely to use it. The cited veterinary guidance supports those environmental principles; it does not provide product-specific durability or effectiveness testing.
