Place a cat tree, window perch, shelf, or sturdy piece of furniture where your cat can watch outdoors or observe a comfortable part of the room—and still retreat and get down easily. The best spot depends on your cat’s preferences, mobility, and household layout; the highest perch is not automatically the best one.
Choose a spot that offers a view and a safe retreat
Height can give a cat more vertical space and a useful vantage point. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines explain: “Access to an elevated area increases the cat’s vertical space and allows it to monitor its environment.” A perch should also feel secure, not exposed: position it so your cat can settle and observe without being in the middle of household traffic.
When practical, give the resting spot a view outdoors. A window perch or stable furniture placed beside a window can provide one; a comfortable view into the room is another option. Ohio State University’s Indoor Pet Initiative suggests offering more than one perch when possible, so a cat can choose between viewpoints.
Fit matters as much as height. Choose a surface long and wide enough for your cat to stretch out. A hammock-like dip or other partly enclosed shape may help some cats feel more concealed. A padded surface is optional; the key is a secure, comfortable resting place.

Make the route comfortable for your cat
Consider age and mobility before choosing a high position. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines recommend relatively low perches or ramp access for kittens and cats with limited mobility. If a cat cannot comfortably reach or leave a perch, choose a lower resting surface or provide an accessible route instead of relying on height alone.

Think about the full route, not just the resting spot. In a small room, shelves may use wall space rather than floor space; in a larger room, a tree may offer a distinct vantage point. Cats Protection notes that strategically placed shelves can help create routes to other resources. Arrange any route so the cat can use it without being forced past a likely obstacle or another cat guarding a narrow passage.
Plan for more than one cat
Provide separated resting places so cats have choices rather than making one perch the only desirable spot. Consider whether one cat could block the approach or trap another at the resting place. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines advise considering more than one entry to a safe place when access could otherwise be blocked.

Cats may rotate among sleeping places, so multiple options can be useful even in a single-cat home. Cats Protection also recommends hideaways and elevated perches in open-plan homes, where a cat may need a choice of quieter resting locations.
Keep resting places distinct from key resources
Plan the perch in relation to food, water, and litter rather than clustering everything together. AAFP and ISFM guidance recommends separate locations for key resources. Animal Welfare Victoria advises keeping food and water away from the litter box and apart from each other. A resting spot should be a place to settle, not a route that requires the cat to pass through a feeding or litter area.

Use existing habits to improve the layout
Notice where your cat already rests, watches the room, scratches, or seeks privacy, then place furniture to complement those habits.
