Safe, comfortable cat furniture should stay stable when a cat climbs or scratches, suit the cat’s preferred scratching style, and offer usable places to perch or retreat. Start with the cat’s size and habits, then check the assembled furniture for movement and damage rather than relying on a particular material or product label.
How to choose furniture that stays stable
A scratching post or tower needs to remain in place when a cat pulls against it. Cornell Feline Health Center advises choosing a scratching structure sturdy enough not to topple during use, and Cats Protection recommends a heavy, stable base for a vertical post. These are practical selection criteria, not certifications of a particular product.
- After assembly, check whether the base rocks and whether joints or platforms shift under gentle pressure.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for assembly and any wall or ceiling anchoring. Do not improvise an anchor or assume a tall tower is safe without one.
- Consider where the furniture will sit and whether a cat can approach and use it without pushing it into an unstable position.

Match the scratcher to the cat
Choose the right height and orientation
For a vertical post, choose one tall enough for the cat to stretch fully. Cornell’s comparison is the cat standing on its hind legs with its front legs outstretched. A cat that scratches floors or other horizontal surfaces may be more likely to use a flat pad or horizontal scratcher than an upright post.

Observe where and how the cat already scratches before choosing. Placing a suitable scratcher near an existing scratching spot or a resting place can make it easier for the cat to use.
Use the surface the cat prefers
Possible scratching surfaces include sisal, carpet, rope-like material, cardboard, wood, and rough fabric. These are options, not a guarantee that every cat will prefer any one of them. The AAFP and Cornell guidance both emphasize matching the surface to the individual cat’s observed preference.

A reported preference finding in the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines says cats scratched their preferred substrate more often when offered either a simple upright post or a cat tree with two or more levels and at least 3 ft high. That finding concerns use preference; it is not a universal minimum height or a safety standard. Read the 2021 guidelines.
Offer a perch and a place to retreat
Elevated platforms provide a place to look out from, while an enclosed box or other secure space gives a cat somewhere to withdraw. These features serve different needs; a perch does not replace a retreat, and a hideaway does not need to be built into a tower if the home already has a suitable secure resting space.

In a home with multiple cats, consider whether each can reach a resting or hiding place without being blocked by another cat. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service recommends platforms or cat trees for elevated viewing and hiding boxes or secure spaces for retreat. AAFP/ISFM environmental-needs guidance also discusses safe havens and separate resources.

Check materials and finishes without assuming a safety label
General guidance on robust and non-toxic materials can help owners think about furniture, but it does not establish a universal consumer safety certification for cat furniture or product-specific safety for a coating, adhesive, or finish. Check the manufacturer’s material specifications if you have concerns, and do not treat a listed surface such as sisal or rough fabric as proof that every component is non-toxic.

Inspect wear and keep furniture usable
Check furniture regularly for looseness, wobble, broken parts, frayed coverings, or damage that could catch a paw or claw. A worn scratching post is not necessarily ready to discard: Cornell notes that wear can mean the post is serving its purpose. Base replacement on its stability and condition, not appearance alone.
UK statutory guidance requires daily safety checks of items in licensed cat-boarding settings. That is a boarding-context rule, not a household legal requirement. Read the cat-boarding licensing guidance.
A practical comparison checklist
When comparing cat furniture, assess the features that affect your cat’s use and the item’s condition:
- Stability: Does the assembled structure stay steady, and does the manufacturer specify anchoring?
- Fit: Is the vertical post tall enough for a full stretch, and are platforms large enough for the cat to use comfortably?
- Scratching match: Does the surface and orientation suit the cat’s observed preference?
- Resting options: Is there a useful elevated viewing point, a secure retreat, or both, as appropriate for the home?
- Upkeep: Can you inspect the joints and surfaces, clean them as directed, and replace worn components with compatible parts?
These checks help compare designs; without product-specific evidence, they do not establish that one model is safer than another.
