The reason depends on what your dog does with the fabric: carrying it, lying on it, chewing it, and swallowing it are different behaviors. Keep tempting textiles out of reach, offer suitable supervised activities, and contact a veterinarian if your dog has eaten fabric or repeatedly consumes nonfood objects.
Why a household item may be more appealing than a toy
It is available and invites exploration
Puppies and many adolescent dogs explore with their mouths. A towel left within reach can become an easy thing to investigate, carry, or chew, especially if the dog has not been redirected toward an acceptable activity. VCA describes stealing as a behavior that can continue when dogs are not taught what they may have instead (VCA Animal Hospitals: Stealing and Stay Away).
It may carry a familiar scent
Worn clothing and laundry can smell like their owner, which may be one attraction for some dogs, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC: How to Prevent Your Dog From Stealing Things). This is a possible explanation, especially for worn items—not a universal reason that every dog prefers a blanket.
Retrieving it can turn into a game
If a person chases a dog or repeatedly tries to take a stolen object, the attention and pursuit may make the behavior rewarding. VCA and the AKC both discuss how stealing can be reinforced this way. Avoid starting a chase when the item is not an immediate danger; practice a trade or release cue instead.

The dog may need a more suitable activity
Dogs that are unsupervised and not occupied with desirable activities may chew or steal household objects. Merck Veterinary Manual recommends appropriate exercise, reward-based training, social enrichment, and suitable toys or chews as part of managing destructive behavior (Merck Veterinary Manual: Behavior Problems in Dogs).
What your dog does with the fabric matters
- Carrying or stealing: This may be exploration or attention-seeking. Prevent access and teach the dog to bring or release items on cue.
- Lying on a blanket: The item may simply be a comfortable place to rest. The behavior alone does not establish a particular emotional or medical cause.
- Chewing or shredding: This creates a risk of swallowing pieces. Redirect to an appropriate toy or chew and supervise.
- Sucking or repeatedly mouthing fabric: Persistent fabric-sucking is worth discussing with a veterinarian, particularly if the dog also tears or swallows material. The behavior alone does not establish why it is happening.
- Swallowing fabric: Eating nonfood objects is called pica. Fabric can cause choking or a gastrointestinal blockage; contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect ingestion. PetMD explains pica and its risks in its veterinary overview (PetMD: Pica in Dogs).
How to reduce stealing and redirect safely
- Secure tempting items. Put towels, clothing, and dirty laundry in a closed hamper or other inaccessible storage. The ASPCA recommends securing clothing and laundry as part of preventing destructive chewing (ASPCA: Destructive Chewing).
- Offer an appropriate alternative. When your dog is interested in a household object, redirect to a suitable toy or chew and reward engagement with that item. Avoid giving old towels as chew objects if you want your dog to learn that household fabric is off-limits.
- Practice “leave it” and a trade or release cue. VCA recommends teaching dogs to leave objects and give them up. Reward the dog for releasing an item rather than grabbing it or making retrieval a contest.
- Do not confront a dog that may guard the item. If your dog stiffens, growls, snaps, or otherwise guards stolen objects, avoid reaching in or escalating the interaction. Ask a qualified behavior professional or veterinarian for help.
- Provide supervised enrichment. A food puzzle or foraging toy can encourage sniffing, seeking, manipulation, licking, and chewing. Choose a difficulty suited to your dog, and supervise to make sure the dog does not destroy or swallow parts. VCA advises caution or professional guidance when a pet behaves aggressively around valued food or toys (VCA Animal Hospitals: Enrichment and Activity Toys).
When to contact a veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian if your dog has swallowed fabric, or if they repeatedly eat fabric or other nonfood objects. Do not assume that a new toy or food puzzle will resolve repeated ingestion: it cannot rule out medical or behavioral causes, and swallowed material can obstruct the digestive tract. If the dog is actively choking or appears severely unwell, seek emergency veterinary care.
