Start with one familiar word, such as “food” or “eat.” Press the recorded button just before a normal food-related routine, then follow through promptly. With repetition, your dog can learn an association between the sound and what happens next. Keep meals and access to food independent of button use: the button is an extra way to communicate, not a condition for being fed.
What a food button can—and cannot—teach
Button training teaches a dog that a recorded sound is associated with an event. It does not, by itself, show that the dog understands language as a person does. A 2024 peer-reviewed study of soundboard-trained pet dogs reported contextually appropriate responses to words about play and going outside, including when words were played by a button. The authors concluded that dogs can learn associations between recorded words and real-world outcomes; the findings do not establish broad conversational comprehension. The paper also disclosed that some authors had consulted for FluentPet and two were company employees. Read the study in PLOS ONE.
Set up one button for food
Choose one word and a clear recording
Pick a short, consistent word that already fits a routine your dog recognizes, such as “food” or “eat.” Record it clearly and use the same word each time. Begin with one button; extra words and a large board are not required to teach the basic association.
Make the button reachable and stable
Place the button where your dog can comfortably reach it, and keep it in the same place while learning. It should not slide away when pressed. A board or tiles can help organize buttons, especially if you add more later, but no particular branded layout is necessary. If you are choosing a device, look for easy recording and playback, a size and activation surface your dog can manage, and a stable setup. A modular multi-button kit is useful only if you expect to expand.

Teach the association in the food routine
- Model the word. Just before a familiar food-related event, say the word and press the button yourself.
- Follow through promptly. Proceed with that ordinary event so the sound and outcome occur close together. Repeat the same pairing consistently.
- Notice voluntary presses. If your dog investigates or presses the button, respond promptly and consistently when appropriate. You can praise the dog or give a suitable small food reward for a voluntary training activation.
- Keep regular meals separate from button use. Continue your dog’s normal feeding routine whether or not the dog presses. The button should never become a requirement for a meal.
The American Kennel Club likewise recommends modeling a button before the related activity and giving the dog time to learn through repeated pairings. See the AKC’s button-training guidance. FluentPet’s manufacturer guide also describes consistent words, prompt follow-through, and gradual teaching. Read FluentPet’s teaching guide.
If your dog does not press the button
Some dogs may need help learning the physical action before they use a button in a routine. Reward small, voluntary steps: looking at the button, approaching it, bringing a nose or paw near it, touching it, and finally pressing it. Do not move your dog’s paw onto the button. If the dog avoids the setup or seems stressed, pause, make access easier, or return to simply modeling the button before the routine. There is no fixed learning timeline; follow the dog’s pace.

Keep button teaching safe and low-pressure
- Never force the dog’s body to press a button or punish mistakes.
- Do not withhold food, water, or exercise to make a dog press.
- Stop or ease up if the soundboard appears to cause stress or avoidance.
- Keep your dog’s existing gestures and signals. A button should add an option, not replace ordinary communication.
These safeguards are explicit in FluentPet’s introduction to button teaching. A food reward for a voluntary practice step is different from making basic care depend on a press.

The relevant product category is recordable dog talking buttons. For a single food word, a button that records and replays clearly and stays accessible may be sufficient. A board or tiles can keep multiple buttons organized as you add words. FluentPet describes its own system and a starter kit with six buttons and three HexTiles, but that manufacturer information does not show that its kit—or any particular brand or number of buttons—helps a dog learn faster.
