Can Dogs Understand Words, or Do Talking Buttons Only Teach Associations?

Controlled tests suggest some soundboard-trained dogs respond to recorded word sounds, but that is not proof of human-like language or a clear meaning behind every button press.

Dogs can learn that spoken or recorded word sounds predict familiar actions and outcomes. In a controlled study, soundboard-trained dogs responded to certain button-recorded words even when researchers reduced ordinary owner and context cues. That is evidence of learned word comprehension in a limited task—not proof that dogs understand every button label, form human-like sentences, or intend a particular meaning every time they press a button.

What “understanding a word” can mean for a dog

A dog that hears “outside” and heads for the door has learned something useful about that sound. The sound predicts an outcome, and the dog responds accordingly. That is a real form of learning, not a meaningless reflex. But it does not, by itself, show that the dog represents the word in the same broad, flexible way a person does.

Claims about talking buttons often blur four different questions:

  • Association: Does a sound predict a familiar event, such as play, food, or going outside?
  • Comprehension: Does the dog respond to the sound itself when familiar visual or social cues are reduced?
  • Production: Does the dog press a button in a way that reliably fits the situation?
  • Language: Does the dog use symbols with flexible meanings or combine them into messages in a human-like way?

Evidence for one does not automatically establish the others. Learning a sound-outcome association can support meaningful responses without demonstrating human-like language.

What the controlled soundboard study found

Bastos and colleagues’ peer-reviewed PLOS ONE study, published August 28, 2024, tested family dogs already trained to use soundboard buttons. The researchers used routine concepts related to outside, play, and food, along with the made-up comparison word “DAXING.” They compared words spoken by an owner with the same words played from buttons, and varied whether the speaker or button-presser was the owner or an unfamiliar experimenter. Read the PLOS ONE study.

How the researchers reduced cueing

In the in-person experiment, 30 dogs were tested at home. Owners wore blindfolds and noise-cancelling headphones, while an unfamiliar researcher pressed buttons whose labels were covered. This reduced the chance that a dog could rely on the owner’s gaze or see which labeled button was being used.

A separate citizen-science experiment tested 29 dogs. Owners carried out the trials but were instructed not to add the usual actions associated with the words. The owners were not blind to the conditions, so the two experiments did not eliminate every possible cue in the same way.

What the dogs did

Dogs showed behaviors fitting the play- and outside-related words whether the words were spoken or button-produced, and regardless of whether an owner or unfamiliar person produced them. In the citizen-science experiment, responses did not differ between spoken and button presentations. That pattern suggests the tested dogs were responding to sounds, not only memorizing button locations.

The findings are narrower than “dogs understand the buttons.” Food- and outside-related responses were only slightly more frequent than chance in the authors’ summary, and the study tested a limited set of familiar concepts in dogs whose owners had already trained them with soundboards. The responses were behaviors such as anticipation, not a direct report of what a dog thought. The authors concluded that these dogs could associate recorded words with real-world outcomes and respond without some other cues, while noting that both word sounds and button locations can be associated with outcomes.

The authors also disclosed that several had consulted for FluentPet and that two were FluentPet employees. Those relationships are relevant context for interpreting the work; they do not, on their own, determine whether its results are sound.

Do dogs press buttons randomly—or do combinations prove they are talking?

A separate 2024 Scientific Reports paper analyzed button-use data from family dogs and owners. Its abstract reports population-level patterns that were not explained by random pressing, including some two-button concept combinations occurring more often than chance. Dog presses were also not perfectly predicted by owners’ presses. The PubMed record describes a dataset of 152 pet dogs collected through the FluentPet mobile app under a data-sharing agreement. See the paper’s PubMed record.

These patterns argue against describing all button use as random or as an exact copy of owners’ behavior. They do not decode what any individual dog meant by a press, establish grammar, or show that a two-button sequence was deliberately composed like a human phrase. This was observational, population-level evidence, not a controlled demonstration of the meaning or intent behind a specific dog’s message. The paper also reports company relationships: some authors consulted for CleverPet and another worked there.

What other dog-word research can—and cannot—add

Dogs learn ordinary spoken cues, and some unusually skilled dogs have learned many object names. A separate Hungarian EEG study reported in March 2024 involved 18 dogs. Researchers compared brain responses after familiar toy names followed by matching or mismatching objects, and interpreted the difference as evidence that dogs form expectations about named objects. This is a separate line of evidence: it was not a soundboard study and does not show that buttons create object-word understanding.

The interpretation is debated. In Associated Press coverage, Arizona State psychology professor Clive Wynne argued that the EEG response showed reactions to stimuli but did not prove that dogs understand word meaning. Read the Associated Press report.

Does my dog know what a button says?

A button press or an excited response to a word is not enough to settle what the dog understands. A practical way to think about it is to look for a response that tracks the sound or situation across more than one familiar setup, rather than assuming a viral clip reveals an inner sentence. The controlled study supports sound-based responses to a few routine words in trained dogs; it does not establish the full meaning of every label or the intent behind every press.

Recordable dog communication buttons can be used as an optional way to teach and observe simple sound-outcome cues. The evidence does not show that buying a soundboard will make a dog talk, improve cognition, or reproduce the study’s results.

What the evidence says about dogs and talking buttons

  • Dogs can learn associations between word sounds—including recorded button sounds—and familiar outcomes.
  • In a controlled study, soundboard-trained dogs responded to some word sounds with ordinary owner cues reduced.
  • The tests covered a small set of routine concepts, not unrestricted vocabulary or human-like language.
  • Button-use data show population-level patterns beyond random pressing, but do not reveal the intended meaning of an individual press.
  • Button use is best treated as a possible communication tool built on learning, with the scope and intent of the messages still being investigated.

UC San Diego cognitive scientist Federico Rossano captured the research’s modest aim in a February 2, 2026, university feature: “What interested us wasn’t whether dogs are speaking like humans,” but “what these tools can reveal about dogs’ minds, and how their behavior might help scientists better understand symbolic communication and its limits.” Read the UC San Diego feature.
