Swimming can provide exercise for a dog that enjoys water and is fit to swim; a bath cannot. Bathing is for hygiene and coat care. For enrichment, choose an activity your dog finds comfortable and rewarding—and treat recreational swimming, therapeutic hydrotherapy and ordinary bathing as three different things.

Bathing and swimming serve different purposes

Activity Main purpose What it offers
Bath Hygiene and coat care Cleaning and grooming, not exercise. Brush before wetting, handle your dog gently, and avoid bathing over inflamed skin or open sores without veterinary guidance. Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Recreational swimming Possible exercise and sensory enrichment Physical activity for a dog that is comfortable in water and able to swim safely. Individual preference and gradual introduction matter. VCA Animal Hospitals
Hydrotherapy Supervised rehabilitation A tailored activity with therapeutic goals—not simply a casual swim. Ask your veterinarian whether it fits your dog’s needs. PetMD

Water’s buoyancy and resistance can make aquatic exercise useful for conditioning or selected rehabilitation goals, but that does not make swimming suitable for every dog. A veterinarian should guide the choice when health, injury, mobility or recovery is a concern. PetMD American Kennel Club

Is swimming good exercise for dogs?

It can be, if your dog enjoys it and is healthy enough for the activity. Swimming takes effort, so it should not be treated as effortless or risk-free exercise. Begin gradually, stay close enough to supervise, and end the session if your dog seems tired or distressed. VCA recommends considering a dog’s individual preferences and introducing swimming gradually; water-safety guidance also emphasizes veterinary advice and watching for fatigue. VCA Animal Hospitals VCA Animal Hospitals

Dogs do not all like water or know how to swim. Do not force a frightened dog into the water. Dr. Tari Kern, DVM, of Pawsitive Steps Rehabilitation & Therapy for Pets, told PetMD: “Dogs should never be forced to swim if they are scared, as it may result in injury for the pet or the person or both.” PetMD, September 1, 2016

Choose enrichment your dog is comfortable with

Swimming is only enriching when the dog experiences it as a positive activity. Watch your dog’s body language: willingness to approach and engage is different from fear, reluctance or fatigue. If water is not appealing, other activities can still provide physical or sensory enrichment. Cornell’s guidance for senior dogs discusses adjusting activity to ability, safe water outings, sensory walks and food puzzles; Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service also recommends attending to body language and grooming care. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Animal and Veterinary Service, Singapore

How to decide what suits your dog

  • Start with the purpose: bathe when cleanliness or coat care calls for it; consider swimming for recreation or exercise; seek veterinary guidance for therapeutic rehabilitation.
  • Follow your dog’s signals: introduce water gradually and let your dog opt out. Stop if you see fear, stress or fatigue.
  • Account for health and ability: age, mobility, conditioning, injury and recovery can change what is appropriate. Ask your veterinarian when any of these raise concern.
  • Make the setting manageable: choose water the dog can enter and leave safely, remain with the dog, and be ready to stop the activity.
  • Keep grooming separate: a swim does not replace bathing when your dog needs cleaning or coat care, and a bath does not replace exercise.

Swimming also adds physical demands that call for sensible conditioning and recovery. Cornell notes that prolonged swimming, particularly in cold water, and abrupt increases in activity can be associated with limber tail. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, updated December 9, 2025
