Brush your Silken Windhound regularly—about once or twice a week is a useful starting point—and check the longer feathering for tangles. Use a slicker brush, keep sessions gentle, and bathe as the dog’s lifestyle and coat condition call for. The coat is not generally described as especially mat-prone, but individual coats vary, so routine checks matter.
What to know about the Silken Windhound coat
The breed’s coat is soft and silky, and may be straight, slightly wavy, or curly. Longer feathering commonly appears on the backs of the forelegs, brisket, hindquarters, around the neck, and tail. These features are described in the International Silken Windhound Society breed standard and the United Kennel Club standard.
That feathering gives the coat its distinctive outline, but it is also where it makes sense to look for caught debris or tangles. Chewy describes the coat as not particularly prone to matting, while still recommending regular brushing; that is a general breed-care description, not a guarantee for every dog. No matting-prevalence figure is provided by these care sources.
How often to brush
Set a recurring brushing session roughly once or twice weekly, then adjust based on what you find. Chewy recommends brushing once or twice a week; Vetstreet recommends a few times a week. Neither sets a schedule that fits every individual dog, so use the coat’s condition to guide you.

- Do an extra spot-check after outdoor activity if the feathering has picked up debris or appears tangled.

How to make brushing comfortable
Keep sessions calm and gentle, and let your dog become familiar with being handled. Vetstreet advises starting grooming when a dog is young so it can learn to accept the routine patiently. If you are introducing brushing to an adult dog, short, unhurried sessions are a practical way to build tolerance.
Do not forcefully pull at a tight tangle. If it is close to the skin, seems painful, or your dog resists, ask a qualified groomer or veterinarian for help rather than risking discomfort or cutting the coat at home.

When to bathe a Silken Windhound
Base baths on dirt and lifestyle: a dog that often gets muddy may need one sooner than a dog that stays clean. Chewy recommends occasional bathing according to lifestyle. Vetstreet’s general breed-care suggestion is a bath every eight to twelve weeks using a mild shampoo; treat that interval as guidance, not a fixed rule.
Should you trim the coat?
For a natural breed-standard appearance, avoid routine shaping of the coat. The International Silken Windhound Society says the breed is shown “in a natural coat with minimal trimming” and that feathering framing the ears and face “should not be trimmed.” Those statements concern breed presentation; they do not rule out trimming needed for hygiene or veterinary care.

Keep the rest of grooming in view
Coat care is only one part of a grooming routine. Vetstreet and Chewy differ in the intervals they suggest for some other tasks, so follow your dog’s needs and your veterinarian’s advice rather than treating a single timetable as universal. Check ears for visible dirt, redness, or odor, keep nails appropriately short, and brush teeth with dog-specific toothpaste.
