Start with a local reptile rescue or animal shelter, then compare any adoption or purchase option on legality, the animal’s known history, the chance to inspect its care, and support after placement. Before paying or committing, confirm that the species is legal where you live and prepare its species-specific habitat and veterinary care.
Check the rules and your readiness first
Possession, sale, import and transport rules can depend on both your location and the reptile species. Check current official rules for the exact species and place before choosing an animal or paying a deposit. In the United States, USARK’s state reference can help you start, but it is not a substitute for current local authorities. In Australia, rules are administered by states and territories, and licences are often required; check the rules for your jurisdiction.
Make sure you can provide appropriate care for the animal’s entire life. Reptiles may need species-specific enclosure conditions, heat, lighting, humidity and diet, so do not assume a generic starter kit is suitable. Identify an experienced reptile veterinarian before bringing the animal home. USARK’s Keeper’s Code of Ethics says access to quality medical and veterinary care is required for responsible ownership: USARK Keeper’s Code of Ethics.
Where to find a reptile
Rescues and animal shelters
Begin with reptile rescues and shelters in your area. Ask what the organization knows about the animal’s age, diet, health, origin, prior housing and behavior; what screening and fees apply; and whether it offers care advice or help if you can no longer keep the reptile. Policies and availability vary locally. The RSPCA says its reptiles are health checked and prepared for rehoming, with advice on housing, feeding and ongoing care; adoption fees vary by center and species. RSPCA reptile adoption.

Specialist shops and breeders
If you buy, consider a reputable specialist shop or breeder you can visit. Ask to see the animal’s current environment and feeding record, and ask what care support is available after sale. CDC advises buying from a trusted pet store and avoiding roadside or temporary vendors: CDC guidance on reptiles and amphibians.

Online listings and social media
Use extra caution when a listing does not let you inspect the animal or its premises. Online advertisements may omit clear species identification, care details, origin or health information. RSPCA Australia cautions about online sellers and recommends checking the seller’s knowledge, licence, premises and animal health. Its guidance is specific to Australia, so it does not replace the law where you live: RSPCA Australia: choosing a pet reptile.
A historical RSPCA report cited a sample of 1,796 online classified advertisements and at least 53 types of reptile; these were findings from a bounded sample, not current market totals: RSPCA report on online reptile trade.

| What to check | Rescue or shelter | Shop, breeder or online seller |
|---|---|---|
| Legality and documentation | Confirm the species may be kept and transported where you live; ask what records accompany the animal. | Confirm the species may be possessed, sold and transported where you live, and ask what permits or documentation apply. |
| Opportunity to observe | Ask whether you can see the reptile and its current enclosure before adoption. | When feasible, inspect the animal and premises; do not rely on a listing photo alone. |
| History and care information | Ask what is known about age, origin, feeding, health, prior setup and behavior. | Ask the same questions, including whether the animal has been eating and when it last ate. |
| Screening and expertise | Ask about adopter screening and the organization’s husbandry knowledge. | Assess the seller’s reptile-care knowledge; in Australia, RSPCA guidance also advises checking relevant licensing. |
| After-placement support | Ask about care advice, fees and what happens if you can no longer keep the animal. | Get any health policy, guarantee or return terms in writing and ask what post-sale support is offered. |
| Fit with your preparation | Match the individual reptile’s needs with your prepared habitat, experience, time and veterinary access. | Do the same before purchase; do not let availability or a seller’s assurance replace species-specific preparation. |
Questions to ask about the individual reptile
- What species is it, and what is known about its age, origin and previous care?
- What does it eat, how often, and when did it last eat? Has it been eating reliably?
- Has it had a veterinary examination or relevant disease testing? Are records available?
- Can you see the animal and its current enclosure? Are the animals housed cleanly, without obvious signs of stress or illness?
- What written health policy, guarantee, return arrangement or rehoming support applies?
- What exact enclosure, heating, lighting, humidity, diet and veterinary care does this species need?
- Is possession, sale and transport legal where you live, and are permits or documentation required?
These questions support due diligence; they do not diagnose an animal or guarantee that a transaction is lawful. A reptile can appear healthy and still carry germs that affect people.

CDC says reptiles and amphibians are more likely than many other pets to carry germs that can make people sick, even when they look clean and healthy. Routine veterinary care and suitable habitat conditions matter, but an exotic veterinarian cannot prevent a reptile from shedding Salmonella, which may be present in healthy animals. Read CDC’s current hygiene and care guidance before bringing one home: CDC guidance on reptiles and amphibians.

Special rule for small turtles in the United States
CDC says federal law has banned the sale of turtles with shells shorter than four inches since 1975. The CDC page attributes an estimate of 100,000 Salmonella cases prevented among children each year to the FDA; this is an estimate, not a measured annual case count.
Do not take a wild reptile or release a pet
CDC advises against catching wild reptiles or amphibians to keep as pets, and the ASPCA states a policy against keeping animals taken from the wild or wild by nature. These are organizational positions and public-health guidance, not a statement of local law. ASPCA position on wild animals as pets.
