A common guppy typically costs about $3–$15 per fish, while a specialty strain from a distinguished breeder can cost several hundred dollars. Those are general guide ranges, not guaranteed local prices—and the fish are only part of the budget. A responsible estimate also includes an aquarium for a group, equipment, food, and ongoing water care.
What does a guppy cost?
Aquarium Co-Op describes prices ranging from $3 at a local pet store to several hundred dollars for a specialty strain from a distinguished breeder. Critter Crib puts common pet-store guppies at approximately $3–$15 each. Treat both as broad estimates: the actual price depends on the seller, location, and fish.
For an ordinary community aquarium, the common-guppy range is the more relevant starting point. A rare or selectively bred strain may cost much more, so ask the seller whether the price is per fish and what strain is being sold.
Why do guppy prices vary?
- Strain: Common guppies generally fall in the lower price range; specialty strains can reach several hundred dollars.
- Seller: A local chain, independent fish store, and breeder may offer different fish and prices. No single current Petco price is established here, so check the specific store rather than assuming a national price.
- Location, sex, and size: These can affect what is available and what a seller charges.
How much does a guppy tank setup cost?
There is no reliable all-in setup total in the available price information: aquarium size, equipment choices, and local prices vary. Plan for the habitat and its equipment before buying fish. PetMD says one adult guppy needs at least a 5-gallon aquarium; Aquarium Co-Op recommends a 5-gallon aquarium for a trio. Since guppies are social, budgeting for a group is more appropriate than planning around one fish.

PetMD’s care checklist identifies these setup items:
- Aquarium, cover or hood, and substrate
- Filter, heater, thermometer, and lighting
- Water conditioner and water test kit
- Net and decor
- Food
- Air pump, airline tubing, airstone, and check valve
Some equipment may be available second-hand, but do not assume used gear is a saving if it is damaged, incomplete, or unsuitable for the aquarium. Compare new and used options item by item, and make sure the tank and equipment can support the fish safely.

What does it cost to keep guppies?
Food, water conditioner, water testing supplies, and replacement filter media can add costs after setup. As one dated listing example, Chewy displayed Omega One Freshwater Flakes Tropical Fish Food, 5.3 oz, at $15.27 on a page result dated 2025. Critter Crib estimates a container of quality tropical fish or guppy food at approximately $5–$15. Pack sizes and prices can change, so check current listings before budgeting.
OATA cautions that uneaten food breaks down and releases toxic waste into aquarium water. Feed only what the fish will eat, and account for water testing and filter-media replacement as part of routine care.

Will guppy sex affect future costs?
Mixed-sex groups can breed, which may increase the number of fish in the aquarium and create additional needs for space, filtration, food, or separation. Chewy notes that an all-male tank avoids likely population growth. Choose stocking with the possibility of breeding in mind rather than treating the initial fish count as fixed.

How should you estimate your total?
- Price the group: Multiply the local per-fish price by the number you intend to keep; use the common-guppy range only as a rough guide.
- Budget the habitat: Include an appropriately sized aquarium and the equipment and supplies on the care checklist.
- Separate setup from ongoing costs: Aquarium and hardware are upfront purchases; food, conditioner, testing supplies, and filter media recur or need replacement.
- Allow for population changes: If keeping mixed sexes, consider the space and maintenance you may need if they breed.
