Scientists do not have a reliable worldwide count of every individual fish living on coral reefs. Surveys count fish in defined areas and use those observations to estimate local density and other measures. If you mean kinds of fish rather than individual animals, NOAA reports over 2,000 reef-fish species in the Coral Triangle alone.
Why there is no single count of individual reef fish
Coral reefs span many locations and habitats, and monitoring programs sample particular areas rather than count every fish on every reef. NOAA’s reef-fish monitoring describes surveys within specified regions and jurisdictions, not a worldwide census. A local survey result therefore cannot be treated as the number of fish in all coral reefs.
There is also no single meaning of “how many.” Scientists may report fish density, how often a species occurs in surveyed areas, the size of fish, or biomass—the total fish mass per unit area. These measures answer different questions and are not interchangeable with a global head count.
How reef-fish surveys work
Counting fish in a defined area
In NOAA’s stationary point count method, divers record the species, number, and size of fish within visually estimated cylinders 15 meters in diameter in shallow-water hard-bottom habitats. The dataset covers the Hawaiian and Mariana Archipelagos, American Samoa, and Pacific Remote Island Areas; its geography and sampling method make it useful for monitoring those areas, but not a census of reefs worldwide. Turning observations into useful measures
NOAA protocols use fish tallies to calculate density and occurrence. Biomass is calculated separately as the aggregate body weight of fish per unit area. Tracking change over time
NOAA’s National Coral Reef Monitoring Program conducts broad-scale, periodic biological sampling of reef-fish communities and tracks species-specific abundance and size in defined U.S. jurisdictions. How many fish species are on coral reefs?

Other NOAA figures use broader categories. NOAA’s National Ocean Service says reefs support at least 25 percent of marine life despite covering about 1 percent of the world’s oceans, and says reefs are home to over 4,000 species of fish, corals, and other marine life. What reef-fish numbers do—and do not—tell us
NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries says about 25 percent of ocean fish depend on healthy coral reefs. This describes dependence, not the share of ocean fish that live on reefs and not a count of individual reef residents. NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries
Reefs provide habitat, spawning grounds, and nursery grounds for fish, linking reef health to fisheries and coastal communities.
