Yes. WWF-India camera traps photographed a Pallas’s cat in Arunachal Pradesh during a 2024 wildlife survey, with the record made at nearly 5,000 metres in the high-altitude rangelands of West Kameng and Tawang. The finding was announced publicly in September 2025. It is the first photographic evidence of the species in the state—not the first in India.
Where and how was the Pallas’s cat photographed?
The camera-trap record came from high-altitude rangelands in the West Kameng and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh. WWF-India’s survey team placed cameras across the landscape and recorded the cat at nearly 5,000 metres above sea level. The public announcement followed in September 2025.
From July to September 2024, WWF-India deployed 136 camera traps at 83 locations across approximately 2,000 km². The cameras remained active for more than eight months despite severe weather, steep terrain and difficult access. Local communities and guides helped the team work in the area. WWF-India’s announcement describes the finding and survey.
Is this the first Pallas’s cat photograph in India?
No. It is the first photographic evidence of a Pallas’s cat in Arunachal Pradesh, but a record from Himachal Pradesh had already been reported by Snow Leopard Trust after a 2024 survey. The Arunachal finding is significant because it adds confirmed evidence from the eastern Himalaya. Snow Leopard Trust’s report describes the Himachal Pradesh record.

What else did the survey record at high elevations?
The same WWF-India survey documented several other wild cats at notable elevations. Its reported records include a common leopard at 4,600 metres, a clouded leopard at 4,650 metres and a marbled cat at 4,326 metres. Reports describe these as India’s highest recorded elevations for those species. The survey also recorded snow leopard and leopard cat above 4,200 metres. These are survey observations, not estimates of how many animals live in the area. WWF-India’s report provides the survey context.
What does the record tell us—and what does it not?
The photograph confirms that a Pallas’s cat was present in the surveyed Arunachal landscape at the time of the camera-trap record. It does not, by itself, establish a resident or breeding population, the species’ abundance in the state, or a change in its conservation status. The announcement is a record of photographic evidence, not a population study.

WWF-India’s Rishi Kumar Sharma, head of science and conservation for its Himalayas Programme, said: “The discovery of Pallas’s Cat in Arunachal Pradesh at nearly 5,000 metres is a powerful reminder of how little we still know about life in the high Himalayas.”

No. An official Wildlife Institute of India catalog entry describes a 2011 Current Science paper reporting first photographic evidence of Asiatic golden and marbled cats at Pakke Tiger Reserve in western Arunachal Pradesh. Those are different species, recorded at a different site; the 2025 announcement concerns Pallas’s cat. The Wildlife Institute of India catalog entry identifies the earlier paper.
