Indoor cats need more than toys: they need safe ways to climb, hide, scratch, search for food, play, and choose where to spend time. You can enrich your cat’s environment with simple changes at home, then adjust them to your cat’s preferences, health, and mobility.

What does environmental enrichment mean for cats?

Enrichment means making it possible for a cat to express normal behaviors and make choices in its surroundings. It is not a matter of buying the most toys. A stable perch, a private retreat, suitable scratching surfaces, and opportunities to hunt and forage can all help meet those needs.

The AAFP/ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines describe a supportive environment as one with a safe haven, separate food, water, toileting and scratching/resting areas, opportunities for play and predatory behavior, and positive, consistent human–cat interactions. Read the AAFP/ISFM guidelines.

Six practical ways to enrich your cat’s environment

1. Build vertical territory

Add a stable cat tree, wall shelf, or window perch so your cat can rest above floor level and watch its surroundings. Elevated space gives cats another place to retreat or observe, but it must be safe to reach and use.

  • Choose a perch wide and stable enough for your cat to stand, turn, and settle comfortably.
  • Secure wall-mounted shelves and cat trees according to their instructions; avoid wobbling or precarious placements.
  • Consider your cat’s age, mobility, and confidence. A lower step or easier route may suit a cat that cannot jump comfortably.

2. Offer appealing scratching choices

Scratching is normal feline behavior. It helps maintain claw health, deposits scent, leaves a visual mark, and gives cats an opportunity to stretch. The American Association of Feline Practitioners explains these functions in Setting Up the Environment for Success.

Place sturdy posts or pads where your cat already scratches or spends time. If possible, offer more than one texture or orientation—for example, a vertical post and a horizontal pad—and see which your cat prefers. A surface that tips over or is hard to reach is less likely to be a useful alternative.

3. Provide a safe hideaway

A cardboard box, covered bed, or tunnel can give a cat a quiet place to retreat. A hideaway is especially useful when the home feels unfamiliar or stressful, because the cat can control when to emerge and interact.

Let a hiding cat come out on its own; do not pull it from its refuge. Place the hideaway somewhere calm and accessible, and make sure it does not block another cat’s access to essential resources.

4. Turn part of a meal into a foraging activity

Instead of serving every meal in a bowl, hide small portions of your cat’s usual daily food or offer it in a puzzle feeder or treat ball. Searching, batting, pawing, chasing, and rolling can make feeding more engaging.

  • Start with an easy puzzle or food placed in an obvious location, then increase difficulty gradually.
  • Use part of the regular ration where practical, and count treats as part of the day’s food so the activity does not add unintended calories.
  • Check that the feeder is easy to clean and that your cat can use it comfortably.

5. Play in short, hunt-like sessions

Use a wand or prey-style toy to invite stalking and pouncing. Move the toy in ways that let your cat pursue it, and finish with a catch or a food reward. Short, predictable sessions can make play easier to fit into daily life.

Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves

Rotate toys to keep familiar items from becoming stale. Supervise toys with strings or small detachable parts, which can create a safety risk if chewed or swallowed.

6. Separate resources and offer choices

Where space allows, keep food, water, litter, scratching, play, and resting areas distinct rather than clustering everything together. Cats benefit from being able to choose different places to eat, drink, rest, hide, and play.

How to choose enrichment your cat will use

A product is only useful if it is safe, accessible, and appealing to your particular cat. Compare these practical factors before adding an item:

  • Stability and safety: Does it stay in place during climbing, scratching, or play?
  • Fit and access: Is the height, opening, or route manageable for your cat’s age, health, mobility, and confidence?
  • Texture and orientation: Does your cat prefer a vertical or horizontal scratcher, a soft retreat, or another surface?
  • Cleaning: Can food puzzles, beds, and frequently used surfaces be kept clean?
  • Difficulty: Can a feeder or activity start simply and become more challenging only if your cat enjoys it?
  • Space and access: Does the item fit without blocking walkways or another cat’s route to resources?
  • Your cat’s response: Does your cat choose to use it? If not, try a different location, height, texture, or activity rather than assuming more expensive equipment will solve the problem.

How to tell whether your cat has enough enrichment

There is no single checklist or numerical threshold that establishes whether every cat has enough enrichment. Look instead at whether the home offers safe opportunities for normal behaviors and whether your cat can choose among them: a place to climb or observe, a suitable scratching surface, a protected retreat, food-search activities, play, and access to separated resources.

Pay attention to what your cat actually uses. Preferences vary, and an option that suits one cat may not suit another. Adapt height, texture, food format, and play style to the individual cat rather than treating any one product as essential.
