Seven sharks are generally low risk to people in ordinary circumstances: whale, basking, megamouth, nurse, wobbegong, bamboo and bonnethead sharks. That does not make any wild shark guaranteed safe to approach. Humans are not the natural diet of most sharks, but touching, feeding, cornering or blocking one can provoke a defensive response.
Are any sharks truly harmless?
No wild shark should be described as completely harmless. NOAA says most sharks are not dangerous to humans because people are not part of their natural diet; its Ocean Service notes that only about a dozen of more than 300 shark species have been involved in attacks on people. Smithsonian Ocean recognizes more than 500 shark species, illustrating that totals vary with classification and source. The useful distinction is not “safe versus dangerous,” but whether a species is normally a threat to people and how people behave around it.
The seven below are generally low risk, not animals to handle or seek out. Encounter frequency, proximity and disturbance matter alongside diet and body size.
Which shark species are generally low risk to people?
| Species | Typical feeding strategy | Where people might encounter it | Why it is generally low risk | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) | Filter-feeds on plankton and tiny prey | Open water; encounters occur around feeding aggregations | People are not its normal prey | Its great size can injure someone if crowded or obstructed; do not grab or block it |
| Basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) | Filter-feeds on plankton and tiny crustaceans | Open water, often near the surface while feeding | Its feeding apparatus sieves small food from the water rather than hunting people | Keep clear of a large animal and do not interfere with its movement |
| Megamouth shark (Megachasma pelagios) | Filter-feeds on plankton | Deep water; ordinary swimmers are unlikely to encounter it | Its deep-water habitat and plankton diet make routine interaction with people unlikely | Rare encounters do not establish that contact or handling is safe |
| Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) | Bottom-feeding, including suction-feeding on prey | Seafloor and reefs; it may rest in place | It is sluggish and has poorly developed teeth | NOAA Fisheries warns it can bite when excited or disturbed |
| Wobbegong (family Orectolobidae) | Bottom-dwelling ambush predator; suction-feeds on prey | Seafloor, where camouflage can make it hard to see | It is not normally pursuing swimmers as prey | Never touch or step on one: a startled, concealed shark may bite defensively |
| Bamboo shark (family Hemiscylliidae) | Small-prey feeding; bottom-associated | Near the seafloor | Its small, bottom-associated body plan and prey differ from a large-predator profile | Low risk does not mean suitable for handling |
| Bonnethead shark (Sphyrna tiburo) | Mixed diet of crabs, shrimp, fish and seagrass | Coastal waters, including seagrass habitats | Its diet and modest size make it a low-risk example | It is still a wild shark; do not approach or feed it |
Whale shark
The whale shark is the largest fish and shark, reaching about 12 metres (39 feet), according to Smithsonian Ocean. Its size can look alarming, but it filters plankton and tiny prey from the water. Size alone does not tell you whether an animal hunts people. Give a whale shark room to swim and feed; do not grab it, crowd it or block its path.

Basking shark
Basking sharks are also very large, but they feed by filtering plankton and tiny crustaceans through modified gill structures. Their open-water feeding behavior, rather than their size, explains why they are generally low risk to people.
Megamouth shark
The megamouth is another plankton-feeding shark, but it lives in deep water and is rarely encountered by ordinary swimmers. That makes a chance encounter unlikely; it is not evidence that the animal would be safe to touch or approach.

Nurse shark
Nurse sharks spend much of their time near the seafloor and can use buccal pumping—moving water over the gills by expanding and contracting the mouth—while resting. NOAA Fisheries describes them as extremely sluggish with poorly developed teeth, but also warns that they can attack when excited or disturbed. Their reputation for being placid is not a reason to touch, feed or crowd one.
Wobbegong
Wobbegongs are camouflaged carpet sharks that hide on the bottom and ambush prey, including by suction-feeding. Their disguise can make a resting shark easy to miss, so divers and swimmers should watch where they place their hands and feet. A defensive bite is a particular risk if someone touches or steps on one.

Bamboo shark
Bamboo sharks are small, bottom-associated carpet sharks. Smithsonian Ocean notes the brownbanded bamboo shark’s very small eyes; the group’s body plan and small-prey diet support calling it low risk to people. That description is not a guarantee of harmlessness, and there is no reason to handle one.
Bonnethead shark
Bonnetheads eat crabs, shrimp and fish, and Smithsonian Ocean reports that seagrass can provide over half of their diet. This unusual mixed diet and their modest size make them a useful contrast to sharks known for hunting larger prey. They remain wild animals, not pets.

Which sharks are safe to swim with?
No species is guaranteed safe to swim with. A shark that is generally low risk can still react if a person corners, touches, feeds or blocks it. If you encounter one in the wild, keep a respectful distance, avoid sudden interference with its route, and follow local wildlife guidance. The bottom-dwelling nurse sharks and wobbegongs deserve particular space because people may come close while the sharks are resting or hidden.
Which sharks don’t eat humans—and what is the conservation context?
These seven do not normally treat humans as food: the plankton-feeding whale, basking and megamouth sharks; the bottom-feeding nurse shark and wobbegong; the small-prey-feeding bamboo shark; and the mixed-diet bonnethead. That is not the same as saying they never bite. Most sharks feed on fish, invertebrates or plankton, and people are not part of their natural diet.

Fear of sharks can obscure the pressures people place on them. Smithsonian Ocean reports that a 2009 IUCN Shark Specialist Group review found 32 percent of 64 open-ocean shark and ray species threatened with extinction. That is a historical finding for the group assessed in that review, not a current estimate for every shark species.
