The pig that looks like a sheep is the Mangalica—also spelled Mangalitsa or Mangalitza—a Hungarian domestic pig breed with a thick coat of curly hair. It is a pig, not a hybrid, and its coat is hair rather than sheep’s wool.
What is the pig that looks like a sheep?
It is the Mangalica, a heritage breed developed in Hungary. Its long, dense curls soften the outline of its body and create the fleece-like look. The fibers are modified pig hair, not wool. The breed’s name also appears as Mangalitsa and Mangalitza; Mangalica is used here for consistency.
The coat can vary in color, so not every Mangalica looks alike. The breed reference describes three surviving varieties:
- Blonde: a light-colored coat.
- Swallow-bellied: a black upper body with a blonde underside.
- Red: a red-colored coat.
These are color varieties of one pig breed, not separate species.

Where did the Mangalica come from?
The breed was developed in nineteenth-century Hungary from older Hungarian pig types crossed with the Serbian Šumadija breed and European wild boar. A key step in its development is dated to 1833. Breed reference
Are Mangalica pigs rare?
The breed came close to disappearing in Hungary during the twentieth century, as lean-meat breeds and changing pork distribution became more prominent. The breed reference reports about 30,000 Mangalica in Hungary in 1943 and fewer than 200 in 1991. Recovery efforts followed. A later estimate in that same account reported slightly more than 7,000 Hungarian sows producing around 60,000 piglets annually. Those figures describe Hungary at the times reported; they are not a current worldwide census. Breed reference

The Mangalica’s history is part of a wider concern about livestock diversity. FAO’s Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) offers searchable breed profiles and reports more than 15,000 national breed populations representing over 8,800 breeds and about 40 species. FAO also warns that the world’s livestock diversity remains at risk. FAO DAD-IS
