Its dark central float and radiating blue strands can resemble an eye in close-up, but it is only about 3 centimeters across. It does not bite; its zooids carry stinging cells, so it is best admired without touching.
What is the blue button jelly?
Porpita porpita, commonly called the blue button, is a colonial ocean animal in the hydrozoan family Porpitidae. The International Taxonomic Information System lists it as a valid species in phylum Cnidaria, class Hydrozoa. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution describes it as a colonial animal related to jellyfish, rather than a single jellyfish body.
What looks like one organism is a coordinated group of specialized zooids. The central float and the strands radiating from it are formed by many small hydroid animals. In the colony, dactylozooids help defend it with stinging cells, gastrozooids feed, and gonozooids reproduce, according to a 2024 study.
Why does it look like Sauron?
The comparison is a visual metaphor, not a scientific name or an indication that the animal has an eye. Its dark circular float, bordered by radiating blue structures, can look eye-like in a close-up image. At about 3 centimeters in diameter, the blue button is tiny; the dramatic appearance comes from its pattern and the way it is photographed. INVEMAR (2016)

Can a blue button sting you?
Yes. The blue button does not bite with jaws. Its tentacle-like zooids carry nematocysts, the stinging cells used by cnidarians to catch prey and defend the colony. Smithsonian Ocean warns that the white tips contain stinging nematocysts and advises people not to touch them. Smithsonian Ocean
The University of Tokyo reported on May 20, 2026, that the sting is typically mild and not dangerous, unlike the Portuguese man-of-war. Individual reactions can vary, so avoid handling a blue button found at sea or washed ashore. “Bites like a jelly” is playful headline language; “can sting” is more accurate.

Where does Porpita porpita live, and how does it move?
The blue button floats at the ocean surface on a gas-filled central float. Its blue zooids radiate around the float and catch tiny animals for food. The researchers also reported that the float grows by adding new rings at its outer edge.
