Komodo dragons do not have teeth made of solid iron. A study published on 24 July 2024 found a distinct, orange, iron-enriched coating on their tooth tips and serrated edges—a surface layer that helps protect the cutting edges as the dragons feed.
What researchers found on Komodo dragon teeth
In “Iron-coated Komodo dragon teeth and the complex dental enamel of carnivorous reptiles,” published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, LeBlanc, Morrell, Sirovica and colleagues used chemical and structural imaging to examine reptile teeth. On Komodo dragons’ teeth, they found orange pigmentation concentrated on the tips and serrations. Both erupted teeth and teeth that had not yet erupted showed the pigmentation, which argues against it being ordinary staining from food.
The analysis identified a distinct, ferrihydrite-rich coating bonded to crystalline enamel. It is the surface coating—not the whole tooth—that is iron-enriched.
How the coating helps during feeding
Curved teeth cut by puncturing and pulling
Komodo dragons have ziphodont teeth: curved, blade-shaped crowns with serrated cutting edges. In puncture-and-pull feeding, the teeth pierce tissue and then cut as the animal pulls. The serrations are therefore working edges that need to stay sharp.

Iron enrichment is concentrated at the vulnerable edges
The coating sits on the tips and serrations, where wear could blunt the cutting edge. The Natural History Museum describes the functional result as stronger serrated edges that wear more slowly. This is a protective surface adaptation, not evidence of metallic teeth.
The study also reports that Komodo dragon enamel is just 15–20 micrometres thick. The authors note that these lizards replace teeth rapidly, making protection of the cutting edge especially relevant.

How unusual is this among reptiles?
Comparisons with other monitor lizards (varanids) and crocodilians suggest that iron sequestration may occur more widely in reptile enamel. The concentrated orange coating is especially striking in Komodo dragons and related ziphodont reptiles. The broader pattern does not mean every reptile has the same coating or the same tooth structure.
What the finding can—and cannot—tell us about dinosaurs
Komodo dragons are living animals with ziphodont teeth, so they can help researchers think about how serrated teeth functioned in extinct predators, including theropod dinosaurs. But the 2024 study does not establish that theropods had the same iron-rich coating. It reports that some theropods had specialized wavy enamel along their serrations instead.

There is also an evidence problem: fossilization can erase or redistribute iron signals, making coatings difficult to identify consistently in fossil teeth. The cautious takeaway is that predatory reptiles evolved more than one way to keep serrated teeth functional—not that Komodo dragons’ tooth coating has been proven in dinosaurs.
Komodo dragons and other predatory reptiles compared
| Group | Tooth or enamel feature described in the study | Evidence qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Komodo dragons | Curved, serrated ziphodont teeth with a concentrated ferrihydrite-rich coating on tips and serrations. | Modern teeth showed orange pigmentation on both erupted and unerupted teeth. |
| Other varanids and crocodilians | Comparisons suggest iron sequestration may be widespread in reptile enamel; the concentrated orange coating is most striking in Komodo dragons and related ziphodont reptiles. | The study does not establish that all members of these groups have an identical coating. |
| Some theropods | Specialized wavy enamel along serrations is reported, rather than a confirmed identical iron coating. | Fossilization can erase or redistribute iron, limiting confidence in detecting ancient coatings. |
Why this discovery matters
The finding links tooth chemistry to feeding mechanics: a distinct iron-rich surface layer occurs at the edges that do the cutting. It also gives paleontologists a useful comparison for studying predatory reptile teeth while underscoring the limits of fossils as records of ancient tooth chemistry.
