A newborn animal found alone is not automatically orphaned. First determine whether it is wildlife or a domestic puppy or kitten, then look for signs of injury, illness, chilling, weakness, or trouble nursing. An apparently healthy wild animal may need space and observation; a cold, weak, injured, or non-nursing neonate needs qualified help—not an improvised feeding plan.
Make the first decision: observe, call a veterinarian, or contact wildlife help?
Use this triage guide without prolonged handling. If you cannot identify the animal or are unsure whether it is wild or domestic, contact a veterinarian or wildlife professional for direction.
| What you find | What to do |
|---|---|
| An apparently healthy, alert wild animal with no visible injury, in a safe place | Leave it where it is, keep people and pets back, and observe from a distance. Its parent may be nearby or away foraging. |
| A wild animal that is injured, unusually cold, weak, lethargic, barely responsive, visibly dehydrated, or in immediate danger | Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife agency promptly. Do not wait to see whether it improves. |
| Wildlife known to have been carried or attacked by a cat or dog, or whose parent is known to be dead | Seek wildlife-professional advice, even if you cannot see an injury. |
| A domestic puppy or kitten that is warm, active, nursing, and staying with its litter | Check with the owner or caregiver if possible and monitor. A brief absence of the mother alone does not prove the baby has been abandoned. |
| A domestic puppy or kitten that is cold, weak, persistently crying, separated from littermates, not nursing, or not gaining weight | Call a veterinarian promptly. Do not treat a foster or a feeding attempt as a substitute for assessing a sick or struggling neonate. |
Why a wild animal alone may not need rescuing
Many wild parents leave their young hidden while they forage. Human presence can also keep adult animals away, so watch from a distance rather than hovering over the baby. If it appears healthy and uninjured, keep children and pets away and leave it in place when it is safe to do so.
Birds: distinguish a nestling from a fledgling
An uninjured nestling—a young bird without the feathers and mobility of a fledgling—can be returned to its nest if you can locate it. A feathered young bird that can hop or perch, or that flutters short distances, may be a fledgling; it is often meant to be out of the nest while its parents continue caring for it. Give it space and keep pets away.

Rabbits: a quiet nest is not proof of abandonment
Mother rabbits commonly visit nests around dawn and dusk. A nest that appears unattended during the day may still be receiving parental care. Do not move the young merely because you have not seen the mother.
When an observation period is not appropriate
Do not wait when a wild animal is visibly injured, cold, weak, ill, barely responsive, or in immediate danger. North Carolina’s wildlife guidance describes reassessment after 24 hours only for an apparently healthy, active, alert, uninjured young animal; that is not a waiting rule for a sick or injured newborn.

When a domestic puppy or kitten may need a foster mother
A nursing foster can be considered when a puppy or kitten is confirmed to be orphaned or its mother cannot nurse, and the baby is otherwise stable. For puppies, a foster nursing dog may be an option; if one is unavailable, a veterinarian can advise on canine milk replacer. Orphaned kittens need kitten-specific nutrition and care.
A foster mother can help meet a feeding and maternal-care need, but cannot diagnose or treat illness. If a neonate is cold, weak, lethargic, dehydrated, persistently crying, or unable to nurse, contact a veterinarian rather than simply placing it with another nursing animal. In puppies, chilling, dehydration, and low blood sugar can occur together and become life-threatening.

- Angled Bottle Design for Natural Feeding: 45 angled kitten bottles allow nursing pet babies to drink milk while lying down, which is the most natural way for pet babies to feed. The ergonomic design provides comfort during feeding sessions, and holding the kitten feeding bottle for extended periods will not cause fatigue. The kitten nipple can be used in conjunction with a syringe for accurate milk portion control, especially useful when weak kittens need syringe feeding
- Three Silicone Nipple Sizes for All Ages: Three different sizes of pacifiers ensure kitten feeders can be used from birth to weaning. The soft silicone nipple is appealing for kittens and puppies. If the nipple's milk outlet needs adjustment, scissors can be used to widen the opening for better flow
- Ventilation System to Reduce Choking: Bottle features a ventilation system similar to human baby bottles, eliminating the need for manual ventilation during feeding and reducing the probability of choking on milk. Provides a safety protection comparable to infant feeding products
- Complete Feeding Kit Included: The product includes 1 x 60ml bottle, 1 x 5ml syringe, 1 x small nipple, 1 x medium nipple, and 1 x large nipple, providing everything needed for feeding kittens at various stages of development
- Safety Precaution for Teething Pets: When pet babies develop sharp teeth, use the feeding products with caution as nipples can be easily bitten off or swallowed by accident. Monitor your pet during feeding to ensure safe usage
Why feeding should be guided, not improvised
Ask a veterinarian which species-specific replacer, equipment, feeding schedule, and technique are appropriate. A baby too weak to suckle needs professional advice on safe feeding; do not force-feed it. Avoid cow’s milk as a general substitute. Poor feeding technique or unsuitable food can cause digestive problems or aspiration.
What to do while arranging help
If it is wildlife
- Keep your distance, reduce noise and handling, and keep pets away.
- Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife agency for instructions.
- Do not give food or water unless a qualified professional tells you to.
- If transport is advised, use a ventilated carrier or box and keep it warm, dark, and quiet until transfer to a wildlife professional.
If it is a domestic puppy or kitten
- Call a veterinarian promptly if the baby is cold, weak, not nursing, persistently crying, or failing to gain weight.
- For a confirmed orphan, ask whether a suitable foster is available and what species-specific feeding plan is safe.
- Do not force-feed a weak neonate or substitute an improvised diet for veterinary guidance.
Keep wildlife care separate from pet care
Milk replacer and foster advice for puppies and kittens does not transfer to wild mammals or birds. Wildlife have species-specific diets and care needs, and the wrong food or feeding method can harm them. When a wild baby needs help, the appropriate contact is a licensed rehabilitator or wildlife authority; when a domestic newborn shows concerning signs, contact a veterinarian.
