Keep food and valued toys apart, preserve your resident dog’s routine, and give either dog a break when its behavior shows it needs space.
Before the puppy arrives: set up space and routines
Make it easy to separate the dogs before they meet indoors. A dog gate, exercise pen, crate, or separate room can give the puppy a safe area and let the resident dog retreat. These are management options; you do not need to use every item. Each dog should have a place to rest without being followed or crowded. The American Kennel Club recommends planning for separation and supervised interaction.
Put away food bowls, chews, and toys that either dog might guard during early encounters. Feed them separately, and avoid placing treats between them. If you reward calm behavior, do it in a way that does not bring the dogs into competition over food.
Keep the resident dog’s familiar schedule and one-on-one time as steady as you can. A puppy brings energy and attention demands, and the older dog should not have to tolerate constant approaches. Consider the resident dog’s health, mobility, personality, and history with other dogs before expecting it to welcome a puppy. Senior dogs may have pain or other age-related changes that affect their comfort.

Make the first meeting calm and low-pressure
Choose neutral outdoor ground rather than having the puppy arrive unannounced in the resident dog’s home. If possible, have one adult handle each dog. Keep both leashed, begin far enough apart that they can remain calm, and walk in the same direction. Let them notice one another and gradually close the distance only while both remain comfortable. A structured walk provides a shared activity without demanding an immediate greeting or play session. See the AKC guidance for puppies meeting senior dogs and its advice on choosing a second dog.
Do not pull the dogs together, force nose-to-nose contact, or insist that they play. If one dog turns away, moves away, or seems overwhelmed, calmly create more distance or end the meeting. Try again later rather than pushing through discomfort. There is no universal session length or timetable: progress depends on the dogs’ responses.

A growl is communication that a dog is uncomfortable; do not punish the warning. Instead, calmly interrupt the interaction and create space before it escalates. The AKC advises supervision and careful management during introductions.
At home: supervise, separate, and allow breaks
Continue with brief, supervised interactions in the home. Use a gate, pen, or separate room whenever you cannot watch closely. Do not leave the dogs together unattended until they are reliably comfortable and you have made an individual safety decision; the VCA introduction guidance recommends keeping new and resident dogs separated when they are not supervised.

Redirect a puppy that keeps pestering the resident dog. Offer the puppy exercise, training, or independent activities, and make sure both dogs get uninterrupted rest. For play, watch whether both dogs choose to participate. An AKC-quoted trainer suggests briefly calling or guiding away the more playful dog: if the other dog does not choose to re-engage, end the play and give it a break. A pause or a single friendly gesture does not prove that both dogs want continued contact.
Read both dogs’ signals and respond early
Body language is context, not a guarantee. Look at the whole interaction and whether both dogs can pause, move away, and re-engage voluntarily.

- Potentially positive play: loose, wiggly bodies, play bows, pauses, and balanced turn-taking can indicate that play is going well. A larger dog lowering its body to match a puppy may be a friendly adjustment, but no single cue proves the interaction is safe.
- Signals to slow down: turning away, moving away, avoiding the puppy, repeated pestering, or one dog continually initiating while the other does not return to play are reasons to separate or redirect calmly.
- Escalation concerns: barking, lunging, snapping, biting, or snarling require immediate attention and careful management. Growling also signals discomfort. Separate the dogs safely if the interaction risks injury; do not rely on them to settle an escalating conflict themselves.
When to get professional help
Ask a qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional for individualized help if either dog shows persistent fear, interactions are difficult to manage, aggression escalates, or you are unsure whether the match is suitable. A friendly dog is not automatically comfortable living with a puppy, and a puppy’s energy can be especially hard on a dog with pain, reduced mobility, or little interest in other dogs.
Significant size differences also call for close supervision because play can injure a smaller puppy accidentally. The guidance in the AKC’s second-dog article is general; it cannot assess the safety or compatibility of a particular pair.
