Pet Adoption Event Checklist: Questions to Ask Before You Adopt

Before adopting at an event, ask what is known about the pet’s health and behavior, confirm the organizer’s process and agreement, and plan for the transition home.

Before you commit to a pet at an adoption event, find out what the organizer knows about the animal, what remains uncertain, whether its needs fit your household, and what the adoption agreement requires. Use this checklist to guide the conversation; the event organizer can confirm its current process and policies.

First, find out how this event works

Meeting a pet at an event does not necessarily mean you can take it home that day. Ask the organizer:

  • Is this pet available to adopt today, or is this event for introductions and applications only?
  • What steps, approvals, and timing should I expect?
  • What identification or proof of address should I bring?
  • What is the full adoption fee, what does it include, and which payment methods are accepted?
  • Can I take copies of the available medical, vaccination, medication, and behavior records?
  • Who can I contact after adoption, and what is the process if I cannot keep the pet?

Processes, fees, and requirements vary by organization. The ASPCA notes that some organizations allow same-day adoptions while others take longer. Its New York City adoption center, for example, asks adopters for non-expired government photo ID and may require separate proof of current address; that local example is not a nationwide requirement.

Ask what is known about health and care

Try asking, “What do you know, what is documented, and what has not yet been checked?” Then ask about:

  • Known health conditions, prior examinations or treatment, allergies, and current medications.
  • Vaccinations and parasite prevention: what has been done, when, and what care is still due.
  • Spay or neuter status and any follow-up instructions.
  • Which medical records are available and whether copies can go home with you.
  • Any symptoms or care needs the current caregiver has noticed.

An incomplete history does not establish that a pet has no health concerns. The ASPCA says information provided when an animal is surrendered may be incomplete; the SPCA of Texas also cautions that known conditions may not include an undetected or later-emerging issue. Ask what the records actually show rather than treating missing information as a clean bill of health.

Ask how behavior was observed—and where

A short meeting at a busy event cannot establish how an animal will behave in a home. Ask staff what they have observed and who observed it. Useful topics include:

  • Responses to ordinary household activity, unfamiliar people, and new environments.
  • Whether the information comes from shelter staff, volunteers, or a foster caregiver—and whether it was observed at home or only in a shelter or event setting.

Describe your own household honestly: who lives there, what other animals are present, your schedule and activity level, housing restrictions, and your experience with pets. This gives the organization a chance to flag questions or support needs. ASPCA guidance recommends drawing on multiple sources, such as staff, volunteer, and foster observations, when considering behavior concerns. Those observations can inform a fit decision, but they are not a guarantee of future behavior.

Read the fee, agreement, and support terms

Before signing, confirm what the fee covers and read the agreement in full. Ask whether medication, a microchip, supplies, follow-up veterinary care, or post-adoption support is included. Confirm whom to contact if the pet becomes ill, the transition is difficult, or the placement cannot continue, and ask what the organization expects you to do in that situation.

Adoption fees differ among organizations and commonly help cover expenses such as veterinary care, spay or neuter, vaccinations, and food, according to the ASPCA. A fee quoted by another organization or in another city is not a reliable benchmark for this event.

Get a practical transition plan before leaving

Ask the current caregiver or organizer for the pet’s food and feeding schedule, daily routine, medication instructions, familiar cues, and advice for the first days at home. Make a veterinary appointment soon after adoption: ASPCA guidance recommends establishing care with a nearby veterinarian and planning for checkups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and emergencies.

If you already have pets, ask how to manage the transition and introductions. ASPCA’s new-pet guidance suggests separating resident pets’ toys while they adjust. Optional, species-appropriate toys can be part of preparation, but they do not replace a gradual introduction or any care the pet needs.
