Remove feces promptly, wash and rinse the contaminated area, then let it dry completely. During treatment, change the cat’s litter daily and clean and disinfect its bowls, bedding, toys, litter box, and other frequently used items daily if possible; continue until a few days after the last medication dose. The goal is to reduce contamination and reinfection risk—not to sterilize the whole home.

Start with a manageable daily routine

Giardia cysts can leave a cat in feces and contaminate places and objects it uses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends regular cleaning and disinfection of pet items and areas while a pet is sick. During medication, do this daily if possible and continue until a few days after the final dose. CDC guidance on Giardia and pets

  • Litter: Remove feces and change the litter daily. Bag feces for disposal.
  • Pet items: Clean food and water bowls, toys, bedding, the litter box, and other items the cat uses. Wash washable fabrics and dry them thoroughly.
  • Surrounding areas: Clean places where the cat spends time, especially any area soiled with feces.
  • Where to wash: If practical, clean pet items outdoors to avoid bringing contamination inside. Otherwise, the CDC suggests using a laundry sink or bathtub and disinfecting that area immediately afterward.

The CDC also advises bathing the cat to remove feces from its fur. Ask the treating veterinarian about timing and handling, particularly if your cat is unwell or bathing is difficult.

Clean feces from household surfaces in the right order

Disinfectant is not a substitute for removing visible contamination. Clean first, then use a surface-appropriate method and follow its instructions. The CDC’s Giardia prevention guidance emphasizes cleaning, rinsing, drying, and following product directions.

  1. Pick up the feces. Use paper towels or another absorbent material, then place the waste in a plastic bag for disposal.
  2. Wash the surface. Use soap or a cleaner suitable for that material.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. Continue until no visible feces remains.
  4. Let it dry fully.
  5. Disinfect if appropriate. Choose a product suitable for the surface and follow its label, including contact time and safety directions.

Do not assume a product kills Giardia cysts just because it is marketed as a pet disinfectant. The Merck Veterinary Manual says no disinfectants are registered to kill Giardia cysts. It describes steam, boiling water, and most quaternary ammonium compounds as cyst-inactivating methods, but this is not a reason to apply any product indiscriminately: material compatibility and label directions matter, and bleach or quaternary ammonium compounds should not be used on soil or grass.

Choose a cleaning method for each item

Heat and thorough drying can be useful options for items that tolerate them. Check the item’s material and appliance instructions before using heat.

Item or surface Practical approach Important limit
Blankets, bedding, and washable fabrics Wash regularly and dry thoroughly. Merck notes that Giardia cysts are susceptible to drying. Use the fabric’s care instructions; do not assume every item tolerates high heat.
Dishwasher-safe bowls and toys The CDC says these can be disinfected using the dishwasher dry cycle or final rinse. Use only items labeled dishwasher-safe and follow appliance and item instructions.
Boil-safe items The CDC describes fully covering the item in boiling water for at least one minute. Use only when the item can safely withstand boiling water; handle hot items carefully.
Compatible hard surfaces or other items Merck identifies steam as a cyst-inactivating method. Use steam only on compatible surfaces and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. No specific consumer cleaner temperature or exposure time is established here.

For a soiled household surface, remove feces and wash and rinse it before choosing a suitable disinfection method. Follow the product label rather than treating a general surface-disinfection claim as proof of Giardia-specific effectiveness.

Handle the yard without trying to sterilize it

Soil, grass, and standing water are difficult to decontaminate, according to the Companion Animal Parasite Council. The CDC specifically says not to use bleach or quaternary ammonium compounds on soil or grass. Pick up feces promptly, limit the cat’s access to contaminated spots where practical, and do not apply household chemicals to outdoor ground in an attempt to disinfect it.

Understand the risk to people and other pets

The CDC says people are unlikely to get Giardia from a dog or cat. CAPC says human infection from a dog or cat source has not been conclusively demonstrated in North America. These statements describe low or unconfirmed risk, not impossibility: wash hands after handling feces or cleaning the litter box, and use ordinary care when disposing of waste. There is no basis here for extreme whole-house cleaning measures.

If you have other pets, ask your veterinarian whether they need evaluation or treatment. The CDC notes that a veterinarian may consider medication for other pets even when they do not appear ill.

Ask your veterinarian about ongoing symptoms or test results

Persistent or recurring diarrhea warrants a discussion with the treating veterinarian about the cat’s care. A positive ELISA or PCR result after treatment does not, by itself, prove reinfection or treatment failure: CAPC says these tests can remain positive for variable periods and should not be used alone to make that determination. Your veterinarian can interpret a result alongside your cat’s symptoms and history.
