How to Tell If Your Cat’s Diarrhea Needs a Vet Visit

Severe or bloody diarrhea, additional illness signs, and a cat’s age all affect how quickly to seek veterinary care. Here’s how to assess the urgency and prepare for a visit.

Call a veterinarian promptly if your cat has severe or bloody diarrhea, or diarrhea along with vomiting, weakness, lethargy, poor appetite, dehydration, fever, abdominal pain, or another clear change in condition. Seek emergency veterinary care if your cat collapses, becomes acutely weak, or worsens rapidly. For a kitten, contact the veterinary team sooner; for an otherwise well adult cat with mild diarrhea, close monitoring may be reasonable, but contact the clinic if it worsens or lasts beyond about one to two days.

When should I call the vet about cat diarrhea?

Diarrhea is a sign, not a diagnosis. It can follow a short-lived dietary or stress-related upset, but it can also accompany a more serious illness. How urgently to act depends on severity, other symptoms, duration, and your cat’s age or health.

  • Call promptly: diarrhea is severe or contains blood, or your cat is vomiting, weak, lethargic, eating poorly, dehydrated, feverish, showing abdominal pain, losing weight, or generally unwell. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 code includes diarrhea with blood and/or loss of energy or appetite among symptoms needing urgent care (CVMA guidance); VCA also advises prompt attention for severe or bloody diarrhea or a cat that appears ill (VCA: Diarrhea in Cats).
  • Seek emergency care: your cat collapses, becomes acutely weak, or is rapidly worsening.
  • Call sooner for a kitten: kittens merit extra caution. Contact the veterinary team right away if a kitten is lethargic, refusing food, vomiting, or passing blood (VCA: Diarrhea in Kittens). Oregon State’s veterinary college also advises extra caution with kittens and puppies (Oregon State Veterinary Teaching Hospital first-aid guide).

How long can I monitor mild diarrhea?

Brief, close observation may be reasonable when an adult cat has mild diarrhea but is eating, drinking, and behaving normally, with no warning signs. Watch for changes in stool and overall condition. Contact your veterinarian if the diarrhea worsens or continues beyond roughly one to two days.

Do not use a time threshold to delay care when other symptoms appear. Cornell Feline Health Center advises: “If the diarrhea persists for longer than a day or two and the cat is also showing systemic signs, such as poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting, you should seek veterinary care as soon as possible.” (Cornell Feline Health Center: Diarrhea) VCA says that a cat that has not improved within two days may need further testing or more aggressive treatment (VCA: Diarrhea in Cats).

Why age and health change the decision

Kittens are more vulnerable, so call the veterinary team earlier rather than waiting to see whether symptoms pass. The same cautious approach is sensible for a cat with an existing illness or a clear decline in condition; the sources do not establish a single safe waiting period for every cat.

What should I do while arranging care?

  • Keep fresh water available and observe whether your cat is drinking and urinating normally.
  • Note when the diarrhea began, how often it occurs, and any changes in stool consistency or color, including blood or mucus.
  • Track appetite, energy, vomiting, and other changes, along with recent food or environment changes.
  • Do not give Pepto-Bismol, Kaopectate, or other human or over-the-counter medicines unless a veterinarian directs you to. Some can harm cats. Ask the clinic before offering supplements or other products (Cornell Feline Health Center; VCA).

What should I bring to the appointment?

Call the clinic before collecting a stool sample: it can tell you whether one is needed and how to collect it. If requested, bring a fresh sample. Your notes about timing, frequency, stool appearance, food or environment changes, appetite, energy, and vomiting can help the veterinarian assess the problem. The vet may take a history, examine your cat, and collect samples for laboratory testing (VCA: Diarrhea in Cats; VCA: Diarrhea in Kittens).
