Choose a litter box your cat can enter comfortably and that you can reach into, wash, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Veterinary guidance favors appropriately sized trays, preferably with low sides for ease of use, but no cited guidance establishes a best box material, brand, or shape for controlling Giardia. During treatment, CDC recommends changing cat litter daily and cleaning and disinfecting pet items daily if possible.
What matters in a litter box during Giardia treatment
The box is a practical part of a cleaning routine, not a treatment for Giardia. Choose a design that works for both the cat and the person who has to clean it.
Comfortable access for your cat
Use a tray that is large enough for your cat and has an entry the cat can manage. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines favor appropriately sized trays and say low sides are preferable for ease of use. Consider your cat’s mobility and usual habits when choosing the entry height.
Surfaces you can reach and clean
Look for a box whose interior, seams, and corners you can reach without awkwardly twisting or leaving areas untouched. This is a practical choice based on CDC’s cleaning sequence; it is not evidence that one box shape reduces Giardia risk more than another.

Compatibility with label-directed cleaning
Choose a box surface that can be cleaned according to the directions on the cleaning and disinfecting products you plan to use. The guidance does not identify a universally suitable material. It also does not establish that plastic, a coated surface, or a new box is better for Giardia control.
How often to change and clean the box
CDC’s pet-specific instruction is: “Change cat litter boxes every day.” CDC also advises cleaning and disinfecting pet items daily if possible while a pet is taking medication, and continuing until a few days after the last dose. Follow your veterinarian’s treatment and cleaning instructions as well.

Changing the litter and cleaning the box are related but distinct tasks. Remove and dispose of feces promptly; the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) advises daily feces removal and disposal with municipal waste. For the box itself, use a routine you can carry out consistently and safely.
How to clean and disinfect the box safely
CDC distinguishes cleaning—physically removing dirt and germs—from disinfecting, which uses chemicals to kill germs. For contaminated hard surfaces, CDC describes this order:

- Remove visible feces.
- Wash with soap or an appropriate cleaner.
- Rinse thoroughly until visible feces are gone.
- Let the surface dry fully.
- Apply a disinfectant suitable for the surface, following that product’s label.
CDC’s instruction is to “Always follow the directions on cleaning and disinfection products.” Do not assume a product, dilution, or contact time is suitable for every box material. CDC also advises avoiding disinfectants containing phenols around cats. Keep your cat away from treated surfaces as required by the product label.
When possible, CDC recommends cleaning pet items outdoors. If that is not practical, it says a laundry sink or bathtub can be used; disinfect that area immediately afterward.

What box style should you choose?
A straightforward open tray can be a sensible option if it gives your cat easy access and lets you reach all the surfaces you need to clean. That is a usability judgment, not a proven infection-control advantage. No reviewed guidance compares open and covered boxes, specific brands, or box materials for Giardia cleanability.
If you are shopping, terms such as easy-clean cat litter box, low-sided cat litter box, or simple open litter tray can help you find relevant designs. A search for “plastic cat litter box” may also surface basic trays, but plastic is not established as superior for Giardia control. No particular product is required by the cited guidance.

Why thorough drying matters
CDC says Giardia survives longer in cool, moist environments than in warm, dry environments with direct sunlight. That supports rinsing away residue and allowing cleaned surfaces to dry fully; it does not prove that a particular litter-box product prevents infection. CAPC also notes that soil, grass, and standing water are difficult to decontaminate, and recommends thorough drying after surfaces are sanitized.
Hygiene and people in the household
CDC says human infection from dogs or cats is unlikely because the Giardia types that make people sick are usually different from those infecting dogs and cats. Continue sensible hygiene and follow your veterinarian’s instructions without treating the box choice as a substitute for them.
