Contact a veterinarian promptly if a puppy is weak, not nursing, or losing weight—or if the mother seems ill. A large litter can make it easier for one puppy’s needs to go unnoticed, so track each one rather than judging the litter as a group.
Set up a quiet, safe whelping area
Use a familiar, calm place the mother accepts, with cleanable bedding that cannot trap or smother a puppy. Keep the area draft-free, but watch the mother and puppies for signs of overheating. Disturbance or unfamiliar surroundings can affect maternal behavior and milk letdown, so arrange the space to let you observe and check the puppies without repeatedly unsettling the dam.
A huddled litter shares warmth, and the mother also contributes heat. Supplemental heat is not automatically necessary if the mother is caring for the puppies in a warm room. If you use an external heat source, monitor it carefully and leave a cooler area the puppies can move toward; heat sources can overheat newborns. Make sure each puppy gets a chance to nurse
After birth, place the puppies along the mother’s belly and check that each is breathing and able to latch. With a large litter, look for a puppy that repeatedly loses access to a nipple, is pushed away, cannot latch, or seems weak. Keep observing nursing sessions; one successful feed does not establish that every puppy is getting enough over time.

A settled litter with plump puppies can be a reassuring sign, but persistent crying, underfilled bellies, or failure to gain weight may mean a puppy is not getting enough milk or is ill. Ask a veterinarian for help rather than waiting for the whole litter to deteriorate. The VCA newborn puppy guide discusses signs of adequate milk and when supplemental feeding may be considered.
Weigh and record puppies individually
Use a digital scale suitable for small weights and keep a separate record for every puppy. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s dog-owner guidance recommends weighing puppies as soon as they are dry and then twice daily during the first week. It gives 10% of body weight gained each day as newborn guidance. Treat that figure as a reference point, not a replacement for assessing the puppy’s condition or getting veterinary advice.

Merck says that weight loss after the first 24 hours indicates a potential problem requiring immediate attention, such as extra feeding, assisted nursing, or a veterinary examination. If a puppy is weak, chilled, unable to latch, or losing weight, contact a veterinarian promptly. A chilled puppy should be warmed gradually and should not be fed until warm and stable; feeding while chilled can risk aspiration, according to AKC guidance on raising newborn puppies.
Support the mother’s food and water needs
Lactation takes substantial energy, and a larger litter increases demand. Offer a complete, balanced food formulated for gestation and lactation or an all-life-stages diet while she is nursing. Small, frequent meals or measured free-choice access may help her consume enough; keep fresh water available. If you use free-choice feeding, track how much she eats and ask your veterinarian to tailor the plan to her condition.

VCA’s feeding guidance for nursing dogs, updated July 23, 2025, says that during weeks three to five after birth a nursing dog may need two to four times the calories of a normal, healthy adult dog. This is guidance for that stage of lactation, not a fixed amount for every dog.
Supplement only when a puppy needs it
If a puppy is not thriving, have the nursing and the mother’s milk supply assessed. When supplementation or replacement feeding is warranted, use commercial puppy milk replacer, follow its preparation and feeding directions, and ask the veterinarian how much the individual puppy needs. Cow’s milk is not a suitable substitute for dog’s milk.

For bottle feeding, use a puppy nursing bottle and feed the puppy belly-down in a normal nursing position. Prepare only enough formula for a feeding, and clean and sterilize bottles and utensils between uses; prepared formula can support bacterial growth. If a puppy cannot suck effectively or needs tube feeding, get veterinary instruction rather than improvising. The AKC newborn puppy guidance covers feeding and equipment hygiene.

Check the mother’s general condition, appetite, temperature, vaginal discharge, milk production, and mammary glands. Dark red to black lochia can be heavy for the first few days, but excessive bleeding needs veterinary attention. Continuing to strain as if still in labor, fever, depression, or abnormal discharge can signal a postpartum problem. Look for mammary glands that are inflamed, tender, hard, or producing abnormal discharge; suspected mastitis needs veterinary contact. See Merck’s postpartum guidance.

If the mother has not resumed eating within 24 hours after delivering the last puppy, the AKC recommends consulting a veterinarian. Also seek an assessment if she seems unwell, cannot settle with the litter, or does not allow the puppies to nurse.
Do not give calcium supplements or try to treat low blood calcium at home. A very large litter and an improper diet can contribute to calcium depletion. Restlessness, panting, stiffness, tremors, weakness, or seizures may indicate eclampsia, which requires immediate veterinary attention. Know when labor needs veterinary help
If the mother is still delivering, keep born puppies warm and provide her with water while supervising her. Call a veterinarian if more than two hours pass between puppies, strong contractions continue without a puppy, she becomes distressed or exhausted, she trembles or collapses, all placentas have not been delivered, or puppies are not nursing. Do not give oxytocin or calcium unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions and use an emergency clinic for urgent signs.
