Keep the whelping area warm, dry, clean, and free of drafts, and let the mother care for her puppies when she can do so safely. Newborn puppies cannot regulate their temperature well, but extra heat is not always needed—and a heat source that is too hot can burn or overheat them. Check the puppies often, record each one’s weight, and contact a veterinarian promptly if a puppy is cold, weak, not nursing, or failing to gain weight.
How warm should a whelping area be?
There is no single room-temperature schedule that fits every litter. The puppies’ age, whether they are with a caring mother, and the warmth of the room all matter. For the first few days, VCA’s whelping guidance gives about 85°F–90°F (29°C–32°C) in the whelping box. It also says external heat is usually unnecessary when the mother is caring for her puppies properly and the room is warm. VCA: Whelping in Dogs (updated July 25, 2025).
Keep ambient temperature separate from a puppy’s body temperature. Merck Veterinary Manual says puppies lack effective thermoregulatory mechanisms until about four weeks old, so their environment must support a body temperature of at least 97°F (36°C). That is a body-temperature figure, not a target for the room. Merck Veterinary Manual: Management of the Neonate in Dogs and Cats.
Published recommendations vary by context. VCA’s guidance for orphaned puppies suggests 85°F–90°F (29.4°C–32.2°C) for the first four days, about 80°F (26.7°C) by days seven to ten, and about 72°F (22.2°C) by the end of week four. The American Kennel Club (AKC) gives 85°F–90°F for the first five days, about 80°F from days seven to ten, and 75°F by the end of week four. These are reference schedules, not a universal prescription for every nursing litter; VCA’s orphaned-puppy guidance is specifically for puppies without their mother. Set up a warm, dry, draft-free space
- Choose a sheltered indoor area away from drafts. Provide clean, dry bedding and replace it promptly when it gets wet or soiled.
- Dry newborn puppies after birth and whenever they become damp; their body temperature can fall rapidly when they are wet.
- Keep the mother with the litter when it is safe and she is caring for them. Her presence and nursing are important, and a warm room may mean no supplemental heat is needed.
- Use a washable, moisture-resistant bedding layer if helpful, while keeping the surface dry and comfortable.
Merck notes that dampness can quickly lower a neonate’s body temperature. AKC also recommends dry bedding and observing puppies’ breathing and nursing. Merck Veterinary Manual; AKC: Best Practices for Whelping & Caring for Newborn Puppies.
Use supplemental heat cautiously
First decide whether extra heat is actually needed: consider whether the mother is caring for the litter, whether the room is warm, and whether you can monitor the puppies and the heat source. If you do use an overhead heat lamp, position it so part of the whelping area stays cooler. Puppies must be able to move away from the heat, and the lamp must not burn the mother or litter. Check the temperature rather than assuming the setup is safe. Merck, VCA, and AKC all describe the need for caution with added heat.

Do not treat a heating pad as automatically safe. Merck warns that a puppy unable to move away from an overly hot surface can be burned. Any supplemental heat should allow a cooler area and be monitored; warming equipment is not a substitute for veterinary care if a puppy is cold or unwell.
Check nursing, vigor, and weight every day
Observe each puppy, not just the litter as a whole. Look for regular nursing and alert, active behavior. Keep an individual weight record using a small digital or baby scale so you can spot a puppy that is not keeping up. When to contact a veterinarian
Call a veterinarian promptly if a puppy is chilled, weak, not nursing, or failing to gain weight. Hypothermia can impair immunity, nursing, and digestion, and VCA warns that it can be fatal in young puppies. Veterinary guidance describes rewarming over 30–60 minutes; do not rely on home warming alone or delay seeking advice when a puppy is cold or weak. Contact the veterinarian about the mother’s recovery, too. AKC advises that she should be eating within 24 hours after delivery and recommends consulting a veterinarian if she is not. It also identifies prolonged strong labor without a puppy, or a long interval when more puppies are expected, as reasons to seek veterinary guidance.
