Are Goathead Stickers Poisonous to Dogs? Symptoms and When to Call a Vet

Goathead stickers are sharp puncturevine seedpods. The clearest documented risk to dogs is painful puncture injury; suspected ingestion still merits veterinary advice because dog-specific toxicity is not established.

Goathead stickers are best known for causing painful puncture injuries—not for proven poisoning in dogs. The stickers are the sharp seedpods of puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris). Veterinary and extension sources describe punctures to paws and other injuries from burrs, while the toxic effects they document are mainly in livestock. That does not prove eating puncturevine is harmless to dogs: dog-specific toxicity, dose, and treatment are not established in the sources cited here.

What a goathead sticker can do to a dog

Puncturevine grows close to the ground and produces spiky seedpods that can catch in fur or pierce skin. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension describes the plant as a low-growing annual with small, yellow, five-petaled flowers and sharp-spiked seeds. UC ANR notes that the seedpods can pierce dogs’ paws and cause pain.

The most clearly documented dog risk is mechanical injury. In a veterinary reference, goatheads appear among plants that cause trauma; puncturing plant parts can lead to lameness, abscesses, fistulous tracts, mouth inflammation, or infections. Those outcomes are described generally for plant injuries, not as a dog-specific study of goathead exposures.

Does eating goathead plant material poison dogs?

The evidence does not establish that goathead stickers are poisonous to dogs, but it also does not establish that ingestion is safe. The sources describing puncturevine toxicity focus on livestock, particularly sheep and goats. They discuss saponins and possible liver effects or photosensitivity in those animals; those effects should not be treated as confirmed dog symptoms.

No dog-specific toxic dose, prognosis, or treatment protocol for puncturevine ingestion is established in the cited sources. If your dog may have eaten the plant or a burr, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service for advice tailored to the exposure. Do not wait for symptoms if the amount may be significant.

Symptoms to watch for by type of exposure

Paw or skin puncture

  • Sudden pain, pawing or licking at one area
  • Limping or reluctance to put weight on a leg
  • A visible puncture, embedded burr, swelling, bleeding, or worsening tenderness
  • Signs that may suggest infection, such as increasing swelling or persistent pain

Mouth or eye contact

A burr lodged in the mouth can injure tissue; punctures in oral mucosa may develop into abscesses. Drooling, gagging, mouth pain, swelling, difficulty chewing or swallowing, or persistent retching warrant veterinary assessment. A burr in or near the eye also needs prompt veterinary guidance; do not try to dig it out.

Possible ingestion

Call a veterinarian promptly if your dog ate puncturevine material or seems unwell. Cornell lists lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and blood in stool as general signs of poisoning in dogs, but these are not established as puncturevine-specific canine symptoms.

When to call a veterinarian or go to emergency care

  • Call your veterinarian promptly for suspected ingestion, a burr that is embedded or difficult to remove, mouth or eye involvement, marked pain, swelling, bleeding, persistent limping, or worsening signs.
  • Go to emergency care now for difficulty breathing, collapse or unresponsiveness, pale or blue gums, excessive bleeding, severe or prolonged vomiting, or inability to bear weight. Call ahead when practical.

What to do after a suspected exposure

  1. Move your dog away from the plants. Keep the dog from chewing the plant or licking an injured area.
  2. Check without probing deeply. If a loose burr is on the surface and comes away easily, remove it gently. Do not dig into tissue; seek veterinary advice for an embedded burr, significant pain, swelling, bleeding, or ongoing lameness.
  3. For possible ingestion, gather details. Note what your dog encountered, when it happened, the estimated amount, and your dog’s weight. Take a photo or a safe sample of the plant if you can do so without further exposure.
  4. Call for case-specific advice. Cornell’s poisonous-substance first-aid page lists ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661. Confirm current contact details and any service terms when calling.
  5. Do not give home treatment or induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional instructs you to. Vomiting may be inappropriate in some cases.

Reducing the chance of another paw injury

Avoid walking through visible patches of puncturevine when possible, and check your dog’s paws after walks in areas where sharp burrs are present. Dog boots may be an option for some routes, but the cited sources document the puncture hazard rather than testing footwear or establishing how effective it is.
