MeowTalk is a mobile app that analyzes recorded cat meows and assigns them broad intent labels, such as “give me attention” or “warning.” It is not a verified word-for-word translator of cat thoughts. The app was created by Javier Sanchez, whose prior work on Alexa’s machine-learning platform informed the project.
What is MeowTalk?
MeowTalk is an app that uses a phone’s audio to classify a cat’s meow. Its stated approach has three parts: detect a meow, assign a general intent, and use feedback to tailor results to an individual cat. GeekWire reported in 2020 that Sanchez had spent a year and a half at Amazon and worked on Alexa’s machine-learning platform before developing the idea. He described the project as “a mini version of Alexa” for cat sounds (GeekWire, November 3, 2020).
The app is a real product, but “translate” is convenient shorthand for categorization. MeowTalk’s FAQ acknowledges that cats do not use human words or a language in the human sense. Its labels are interpretations of vocalizations, not confirmed translations of what a cat is thinking.
Can an app really translate my cat’s meows?
It can sort sounds into labels the app associates with broad states or needs; the available evidence does not show that it can reliably translate a meow into a specific human sentence. MeowTalk’s FAQ names 11 categories:

These are the company’s categories, not a scientifically established dictionary of feline meanings. A cat’s posture, surroundings, routine and health can change how a sound should be understood. Treat a result as one possible clue alongside what you observe, not as a substitute for context.
How does MeowTalk learn a particular cat’s sounds?
MeowTalk says users can correct a result by marking it incorrect and choosing a phrase that better fits the situation. The company says submitted recordings and feedback can help the system learn that cat’s vocal patterns. That offers a way to personalize the app, but it does not independently verify that a label is correct or that the app understands a cat’s exact intent (MeowTalk FAQ).

How accurate is MeowTalk?
The reviewed sources establish no independently validated accuracy percentage. A number such as 70% or 90% should not be treated as fact without a published study and its methods. GeekWire’s 2020 report offered an anecdote, not a controlled test: its reporter described a cat waiting for a treat receiving “mommy” as the app’s output. That example illustrates why a result can seem mismatched; it does not measure overall accuracy.

MeowTalk’s homepage reports more than 20 million downloads worldwide, more than 280 million meows recorded and 8+ million cat profiles since November 2020. These are company-reported cumulative figures, and the site does not specify the exact date at which the totals were measured (MeowTalk homepage). Usage totals do not establish how accurately the app classifies sounds.
Is MeowTalk free?
MeowTalk’s FAQ says the free version provides three basic intents, with other translations blurred, while Premium provides all intents. The Google Play listing accessed October 8, 2026, showed Premium at US$2.99 per month or local equivalent and an update date of February 5, 2026. That is a dated store listing, not a guaranteed price in every region or app store; check the subscription screen and local listing before subscribing (MeowTalk FAQ; Google Play listing).

Who created MeowTalk, and why?
GeekWire identified Sanchez as a technical program manager at Bellevue-based Akvelon when it profiled the project on November 3, 2020. The article said Akvelon had given the pet project a green light four or five months earlier. Sanchez’s machine-learning experience at Alexa suggested a familiar architecture: detect a sound, infer a general intent, then adapt to a particular user—in this case, a cat.
MeowTalk’s FAQ attributes Sanchez’s interest in cat vocalizations to work by Greek data scientist Stavros Ntalampiras and names Sergei Dreizin, Constantine Korovkin and Oleg Rezhko as co-founders. That is the company’s account of the project’s origins (MeowTalk FAQ). GeekWire also mentioned an early smart-collar prototype concept in 2020; that report is not evidence that a collar is currently sold.

What should you know about audio and privacy?
Using MeowTalk involves audio recording. Its privacy policy says the service collects account details, cat-profile information, recordings, labels and intent-recognition results; it also says active-app vocalizations may be used to improve its AI and recordings are kept while useful for that purpose. The policy describes possible sharing with selected partners. Because the policy includes older beta and planned-controls language, consult the live policy and current app disclosures rather than assuming every detail remains unchanged (MeowTalk privacy policy).
Google Play’s data-safety section says the app may share personal information, app activity, and device or other IDs; it may collect personal information, photos/videos and other data. It says data is encrypted in transit and users can request deletion. These are developer-provided store disclosures, not an independent privacy audit (Google Play listing).
When should you rely on your own observations instead?
Use the app as an optional way to organize or reflect on meows, not as a health tool. Its “in pain” category does not make it a diagnostic system, and the reviewed sources do not establish that it can detect illness or replace veterinary advice. If your cat’s vocalizations change noticeably or you are concerned about pain or illness, assess the cat’s overall behavior and seek veterinary guidance rather than relying on an app label.
For anyone interested in feline vocalizations beyond an app, MeowTalk’s FAQ cites The Secret Language of Cats by Susanne Schötz as a further read. No special hardware is established as necessary for using the current app.
