9 Facts About Leafcutter Ants: What They Eat and How They Farm

Leafcutter ants do not eat the leaves they carry. They use the cut plant material to grow a fungal crop, which the colony eats. That farming partnership shapes the ants’ food, nest, and daily work—but colony size and garden structure vary, so figures for particular species or nests are not universal.

What do leafcutter ants eat?

1. They eat fungus, not the leaves they cut

Leaves are crop material: workers bring pieces back to the nest and use them to grow fungus. The ants feed on that fungal crop rather than eating the leaves themselves, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

2. The ants and fungus depend on each other

The relationship is a form of mutualism: both partners benefit. The ants provide and tend the fungus, while the fungus supplies food. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) describes the ants as relying on the fungus for survival and the fungus in this partnership as unable to reproduce independently. STRI’s leafcutter-ant guide characterizes the partnership as highly interdependent.

3. The nest’s fungal garden is a living crop

Workers process plant matter into compost-like material that serves as a substrate for fungal gardens. The garden is not simply a pile of stored leaves: it is a cultivated food source. STRI says the fungal crop is the sole food source for the young in the colonies described in its guide.

How does a leafcutter-ant colony run its farm?

4. Workers perform a range of maintenance jobs

Farming requires more than bringing in leaves. STRI describes workers cleaning themselves and the young, removing compost debris before it enters the nest, carrying garbage to a dump, and removing bacterial and fungal spores from gardens. These examples show coordinated colony work; they should not be read as a complete or universal assignment of jobs to particular worker sizes.

5. The garden needs protection from microbes

Microbes can threaten a crop, so garden care includes removing spores. STRI also describes Actinomycetes bacteria associated with the ants as part of their antimicrobial defenses. This is microbial protection within the ant-fungus system—not evidence that leafcutter ants created or supplied human medicines.

How large and long-lived can leafcutter-ant nests be?

6. Some colonies contain several million ants

STRI says some leafcutter-ant colonies may contain several million individuals and occupy a substantial underground area. That describes the potential scale of some colonies, not a typical size that applies to every species or nest.

7. Mature Atta nests may have thousands of gardens

A 2010 paper reports that mature nests of the genus Atta may contain hundreds to thousands of separate gardens. Its authors cite a maximum estimate of 5,000 gardens from earlier literature; this is a reported upper estimate, not a count for all nests. The 2010 PLOS ONE paper also gives a 10–20-year lifespan estimate for Atta nests in its background literature. That range is an estimate cited by the paper, not a direct measurement of the lifespan of every nest.

What do studies say about the ants’ fungal crop?

8. Some surveyed Atta nests kept a stable cultivar

In a peer-reviewed study of Atta texana and A. cephalotes, researchers found no evidence of multiple fungal cultivars within the surveyed nests. Resampling over five years found no genotype turnover in the cultivar. Those findings apply to the species and nests examined; they do not establish that every leafcutter-ant species or colony maintains the same cultivar in the same way. The study’s account of cultivar persistence provides the species and sampling context.

9. Fungus farming is ancient, but the dates are estimates

The Smithsonian Institution estimated in a 2008 release that fungus-growing agriculture in ants originated about 50 million years ago. A separate 2016 Smithsonian release estimated that leafcutter ants emerged about 15 million years ago. These are estimates from different institutional accounts about related but distinct evolutionary milestones; they are not interchangeable dates or exact measurements. Smithsonian’s 2008 account discusses the origin of ant fungus farming, while its 2016 account gives the estimate for leafcutter ants.
