Feed a Flowerhorn a formulated cichlid pellet as its main food, with suitable frozen foods such as shrimp or krill offered as supplements. Give only what the fish eats promptly, and avoid making live feeder fish a routine part of its diet: live foods can carry parasites or disease and may not provide complete nutrition.
What should a Flowerhorn fish eat?
Choose a commercial cichlid pellet formulated for the fish’s size and feeding behavior, and use it as the dietary staple. Merck Veterinary Manual says commercial dried foods such as pellets, flakes, and granules are usually formulated to provide an appropriate nutrient mix when fed properly; it also recommends a primary food source supplemented with other foods as needed. Merck Veterinary Manual: Providing a Home for Fish.
The Fish Collection’s Flowerhorn care guide names Grand Sumo, Okiko Platinum, and Hikari Cichlid Gold as examples of cichlid pellets. These are examples, not a tested ranking. The guide also lists frozen shrimp, krill, and bloodworm as supplementary foods. Treat supplements as variety rather than assuming they are nutritionally complete on their own. The Fish Collection: Flowerhorn Cichlid Care Guide.
How much should you feed?
Start with a small portion and observe how quickly the fish eats. The Fish Collection guide suggests an amount consumed in about two minutes. Adjust the portion to the individual fish rather than relying on a fixed pellet count: feeding needs vary with species, age, system, and water temperature, according to Merck. Uneaten food contributes to poor tank conditions, and Merck warns that overfeeding can cause health problems as well as a dirty tank.

Merck gives general fish-feeding ranges of 1% to 2% of body weight per day for maintenance diets and 3% to 5% for growth diets. These are broad reference figures, not Flowerhorn-specific targets, and Merck does not identify a publication year for them. They should not be treated as a prescription for an individual fish.
How often should you feed a Flowerhorn?
The Fish Collection guide recommends three to four meals a day for juveniles and two meals a day for adults, with one fasting day each week. This is a recommendation from that Flowerhorn-specific care guide, not a universally established veterinary schedule. Merck’s general fish guidance says feeding rates and methods depend on the fish and its conditions, and does not set a Flowerhorn-specific frequency.

Which foods should you use cautiously?
- Live feeder fish: Avoid making them a routine staple. The Flowerhorn guide cites parasite risk, while Merck notes that live foods can carry parasites or disease and may lack nutrients needed for a complete diet.
- Beef heart: The Flowerhorn guide cautions against feeding excess, citing fatty-liver risk.
- Appearance-focused foods: Do not assume that a particular pellet or supplement guarantees brighter color, faster growth, or a larger kok. The cited sources do not establish those effects.
How to choose a sensible feeding routine
- Use a formulated cichlid pellet appropriate for your Flowerhorn’s size and feeding behavior as the main food.
- Offer frozen shrimp, krill, or bloodworm occasionally as supplements, rather than replacing the staple diet with a single food.
- Begin with a small serving, watch how promptly it is eaten, and adjust the next serving to avoid leftovers.
- Use the Flowerhorn guide’s age-based schedule as a starting recommendation, then account for the fish’s condition and aquarium circumstances rather than assuming one schedule fits every fish.
The Flowerhorn guide also lists pellets containing 40–48% protein, but that range is its recommendation, not an established veterinary requirement or an independently verified optimum. Choose a food based on its suitability as a formulated diet, not an unsupported promise about appearance or growth.
