The term describes its intended use, not a particular species: goldfish and rosy red fathead minnows are documented examples. Whether live prey is appropriate depends on the predator’s nutritional needs, the prey’s size, and how the fish are sourced and managed.
What does “feeder fish” mean?
“Feeder fish” is a market-use label for live fish intended as food for piscivorous pets—animals that eat fish. It does not name a single species or a distinct biological group. The University of Arkansas Extension identifies goldfish and rosy red fathead minnows as examples sold for this purpose. Those fish may also be sold for other uses, including ornamental display or fishing bait.
Feeder fish and baitfish can involve some of the same species, but the intended market differs. The University of Arkansas Extension defines baitfish as fish produced to attract game or food fish for anglers; feeder fish are intended to be eaten by piscivorous pets. Are feeder fish a good food for pet predators?
There is no universal answer. Live feeder fish are not established as necessary or nutritionally complete for every fish-eating pet. Fish have species-specific nutritional requirements, and veterinary guidance notes that detailed requirements are known for only a handful of fish species. A food suitable for one species should not automatically be assumed suitable for a related one.

When choosing a diet, consider the predator’s species and life stage, whether the overall diet supplies appropriate nutrition and variety, whether the food can be swallowed and digested, and the disease-control demands of sourcing live prey. Avoid assuming that live prey is inherently healthier or more natural—or that any generic prepared food is complete for every predator.
Prepared diets are another option to assess
Merck Veterinary Manual describes pelleted feeds and combinations of commercial and live foods. Feed type, size, buoyancy, and delivery should suit the fish’s feeding behavior and what it can ingest. A carnivore pellet may be worth comparing with live prey, but its suitability depends on the particular animal and product. Merck Veterinary Manual: Nutrition in Fish.

Can feeder fish make a pet fish sick?
Newly acquired fish can introduce disease risks, but that does not mean every feeder fish carries pathogens or that every feeder fish is unsafe. Source history matters when planning disease control and quarantine. Merck notes that some species are especially susceptible to parasitic and bacterial infections during quarantine, including during the first 30 days; this is veterinary context, not a universal quarantine rule for every species or setup. Do not add newly purchased fish directly to an established aquarium without a suitable disease-control plan. Follow guidance appropriate to the species and setup, and seek advice from a veterinarian who treats fish if you are uncertain about quarantine or a fish appears unwell.

What else matters when keeping fish together?
Water quality is an important part of fish health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says poor water quality is often a cause of illness in pet fish and advises checking it when a fish seems sick. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service also advises maintaining and cycling tanks, quarantining new arrivals, and checking compatibility.
