Do Cats Snore? Is It Really Normal?

Yes, cats can snore. An occasional, long-standing snore during sleep is often harmless, particularly in a flat-faced cat or a cat that sleeps in a certain position. A new or worsening sound, noisy breathing while awake, or any sign of labored breathing needs veterinary attention, and breathing difficulty is an emergency.

What counts as normal snoring in cats

A snore is a sound made when air moving through the upper airway makes soft tissues vibrate. VCA lists sleep position and brachycephalic (flat-faced) anatomy among the common contributors. Because airflow changes with posture, a cat may snore only when it sleeps curled a certain way, or only on some nights.

Published veterinary sources do not give a reliable percentage of cats that snore, so there is no benchmark for how common the sound is. What separates an ordinary sound from a warning sign is the pattern: how long it has been present, whether it is getting worse, when it happens, and whether anything else is wrong. The table below sets out the usual triage logic.

Pattern What it usually suggests Suggested action
Long-standing, occasional snore during sleep, cat otherwise normal Often position or anatomy related; may be benign Note the pattern and mention it at the next routine visit
New onset of snoring Could reflect inflammation, infection, obstruction, or weight change Call a veterinarian for an exam
Snoring that is getting louder or more frequent Change in the upper airway that needs assessment Call a veterinarian for an exam
Snoring with nasal discharge, sneezing, coughing, or wheezing Possible respiratory or nasal disease Call a veterinarian promptly
Noisy breathing while awake Not typical of simple snoring; needs assessment of the airway Veterinary assessment
Labored breathing, open-mouth breathing, or struggling to breathe Possible serious respiratory problem Urgent veterinary care now

Why cats snore

Several different causes can produce the same sound, so the snore itself does not identify which one is involved. Veterinarians consider the following categories.

Sleep position

A head or neck position that narrows the airway can produce an occasional snore. If the sound appears only in one posture and stops when the cat moves, that is a useful observation to share with your veterinarian.

Flat-faced anatomy

Brachycephalic breeds, including Persians, can have narrowed nostrils and other upper-airway features that restrict airflow. Bruce Kornreich, DVM, PhD, ACVIM, associate director of the Cornell Feline Health Center, told PetMD: “These brachycephalic cats have shortened bones in their face and nose, which makes them more prone to snoring.” A snore that is a lifelong feature of such a cat can still be worth discussing if breathing seems compromised.

Nasal and upper-airway disease

Infection or chronic inflammation can make the nasal passages and throat swell or produce discharge that narrows the airway. A polyp, tumor, or foreign object lodged in the nose or throat can obstruct airflow more directly. These causes are less likely to be a stable, lifelong sound, which is why a new snore deserves an exam.

Body weight

Excess weight may add tissue around the upper airway and contribute to snoring. If weight is a concern, ask your veterinarian for a weight-management plan. A diet product is not a snoring treatment.

Snoring versus noisy breathing while awake

A sound heard only during sleep is different from noisy breathing that happens while the cat is awake. PetMD distinguishes two terms that veterinarians use to describe the sound.

Term Pitch and quality Usual location What it does not tell you
Stertor Lower-pitched snoring or snorting Nasal passages or back of the mouth The specific cause
Stridor Higher-pitched sound Narrowing at the larynx or trachea The specific cause

Neither term identifies a disease. Owners rarely know which term fits, and that is fine. What matters is describing the sound, when it happens, and whether it occurs while the cat is awake.

When to call a veterinarian

Contact your veterinarian for any of the following:

  • New or worsening snoring
  • Nasal discharge or nosebleeds
  • Sneezing or coughing
  • Wheezing or a change in the cat’s voice
  • Facial swelling
  • Noisy breathing while the cat is awake

A short audio or video recording can help the veterinarian hear what you hear, but it cannot establish a diagnosis. Snoring should never be diagnosed from sound alone.

Emergency signs: labored breathing

Labored or difficult breathing is not ordinary snoring. If your cat is struggling to breathe or breathing with its mouth open, seek urgent veterinary care. Daniel Fletcher, DVM, an emergency and critical care assistant professor at Cornell, is quoted on Cornell’s difficulty-breathing page: “But any cat that is showing signs of breathing difficulty—whatever the cause—is at high risk of dying if the respiratory problem is not treated promptly.”

What to do at home

  1. Note when the snoring happens: during sleep only, or also while awake; and whether it follows a particular position.
  2. Track whether the pattern is stable, improving, or worsening over several days, and note any other changes in appetite, energy, or breathing.
  3. Record a short audio or video clip of the sound for your veterinarian.
  4. Book a veterinary exam if the snoring is new, worsening, or accompanied by any sign listed above.
  5. If indoor air is very dry, you may use a humidifier near the cat’s resting spot for comfort. PetMD mentions this as an optional environmental measure, not a proven treatment for snoring, and it should never delay a veterinary visit.

Questions to ask at the visit

  • Does the cat’s head shape or nostril size suggest a breathing risk?
  • Should the nasal passages and throat be examined for discharge, swelling, or an obstruction?
  • Is the cat’s weight a factor, and what weight plan would you suggest?
  • What signs should prompt an immediate return visit?

The core message is simple: a quiet, longstanding snore in an otherwise comfortable cat is usually not an emergency, but a change in the sound or in how the cat breathes is the signal to get a professional opinion.
