A small amount of drooling in a relaxed, contented cat can be normal. A new, heavy, frequent or continuous change is not something to wait out. Drooling is a symptom, and it can point to problems ranging from mouth pain and nausea to poisoning, heatstroke or a swallowing problem. The right response depends on how much the cat drools, how quickly it started, and what else you see.

When drooling is normal

Some cats drool a little when they are happy and relaxed. The UK charity PDSA, in its guidance “Drooling in cats” (October 2023), states that drooling in cats “can be completely normal, and some cats do it as a response to being happy and relaxed.” The key word is relaxed. A few damp spots on a blanket while a cat purrs on your lap are a different situation from saliva dripping from the mouth while the cat is eating, resting or moving around the house.

Normal drooling is usually small in amount, linked to a calm moment, and unchanged from the cat’s usual pattern. If the amount changes or the drooling becomes persistent, do not assume it is harmless.

Signs that the drooling is not routine

  • Drooling that starts suddenly, or that has increased noticeably from the cat’s usual level
  • Drooling that is continuous rather than occasional
  • Bad breath, blood-tinged saliva, or visible wounds or swelling in the mouth
  • Pawing at the mouth or face, or resisting when you touch or look at the mouth
  • Reluctance to eat, dropping food, or difficulty swallowing
  • Drooling together with vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness or lethargy
  • Drooling after a possible poison, medication, plant or chemical exposure
  • Drooling during a period of overheating

Any one of these signs is enough reason to book a veterinary appointment. None of them, on its own, tells you what the cause is.

Causes of cat drooling

Drooling has many possible causes. The Merck Veterinary Manual, which the reviewed material draws on, covers a broad range of oral and salivary conditions. Listing them here is not meant to suggest that any single cause is likely in your cat.

Dental and mouth disease or injury

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is one of the most common oral problems in cats. Inflammation in the mouth can cause bad breath and drooling, sometimes with blood-tinged saliva. Pain may make a cat paw at its mouth or resist examination. Other mouth problems that can cause drooling include foreign objects lodged in the mouth, wounds, burns, ulcers, tumours and inflammation of the tongue.

The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) states in its 2025 brochure that “up to 85% of cats will already have signs of periodontal (gum) disease by two years of age.” That figure describes how common gum disease is. It does not tell you how many cats drool, and it does not mean that a drooling cat has gum disease.

Nausea and stomach upset

Cats may drool when they feel nauseous. Stomach upset can also come with vomiting and a reduced appetite. Drooling by itself does not show which stomach or gut problem is involved, so the veterinarian needs to look at the whole picture.

Poisons and medications

Some drugs and poisons cause heavy salivation. If you think your cat has been exposed to a poison, or has taken a medication it should not have, contact a veterinarian immediately. Do not try a generic home remedy first.

Swallowing problems and foreign material

If a cat has difficulty swallowing, saliva can build up and spill from the mouth. A foreign body in the mouth or throat can cause the same effect. Do not try to pull out an object you can see lodged in the mouth or throat, because this can cause further injury.

Stress, fear, excitement and motion sickness

Motion sickness, fear and excitement can all trigger drooling. A cat that drools in the car or during a stressful visit may be reacting to the situation. Repeated episodes still justify a check-up, especially if they happen in ordinary, calm settings.

Seizures, metabolic disease and salivary gland problems

Seizures and convulsive disorders can cause drooling. Metabolic conditions, including kidney failure and hepatic encephalopathy (a complication of liver disease), are also listed among causes. Problems with the salivary glands themselves can change how much saliva is produced. These causes are less common than dental disease, but they are serious, so drooling alongside other illness signs should be assessed promptly.

Heatstroke

Excessive drooling can occur when a cat overheats. Treat suspected heatstroke as urgent and contact a veterinarian immediately.

What to do, by urgency

Situation What to do
Occasional drooling while the cat is clearly relaxed, with no other changes Monitor it. Note how often it happens and whether the amount changes.
New or recurring drooling, even if the cat seems otherwise well Arrange a veterinary examination. Dental and other mouth disease can be hidden, and cats often conceal pain.
Sudden or continuous drooling, pain, distress, or drooling with vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargy Contact a veterinarian immediately.
Possible poison, medication overdose or heatstroke Contact a veterinarian immediately.
Breathing difficulty, collapse or severe weakness Go to an emergency veterinary service now.

PDSA’s advice is written for pets in the UK. If you live elsewhere, use your local veterinarian or your nearest emergency veterinary service for the same decisions.

Steps to take at home while you arrange care

  1. Check the cat’s breathing and whether it is alert and able to move. If it is struggling to breathe or has collapsed, go to emergency care without delay.
  2. Look at the mouth only if the cat is calm and it is safe to do so. Do not force the mouth open, and do not try to remove anything lodged in the mouth or throat.
  3. Write down when the drooling started, how much there is, whether it is continuous, and whether it happens when eating or resting.
  4. List anything the cat may have eaten, chewed, or come into contact with, including household products, plants, human medications and any changes in the environment such as heat exposure.
  5. Bring the cat in, or call the veterinarian, and share the list. Do not give any product, including over-the-counter or home remedies, until a veterinarian has advised on it.

What a veterinarian will do

The veterinarian will ask about the drooling pattern, your cat’s medical history and any other symptoms. They will then examine the cat, including the mouth. Blood tests or other investigations may be recommended depending on what the examination shows.

Treatment depends on the cause. Dental disease is usually managed with dental treatment. When nausea is suspected, further investigation of the stomach or gut may be needed. Poisoning, a foreign body, an injury or a whole-body illness each need different care. A painful mouth may need sedation for a thorough examination, but not every cat will need this. A veterinarian’s diagnosis is what determines the treatment plan.

Preventive dental care and drooling

Good daily dental care helps prevent plaque and gum disease, and it is worth doing for every cat. The FelineVMA advises that daily brushing with cat-safe toothpaste is an effective home measure, and that foods, treats or water additives carrying the VOHC seal can help reduce plaque build-up. Ask your veterinarian which products suit your cat.

Preventive dental care, however, does not treat drooling that has no clear cause. If your cat is drooling, the first step is a veterinary examination, not a dental product. Dental disease can be difficult to see, and a mouth that looks acceptable on the surface may still be painful.

In summary, a little drooling during a content moment is often nothing to worry about. Sudden, continuous or new drooling, or drooling with any other warning sign, needs a veterinarian’s assessment, and the treatment will follow from what they find.
