A new cat needs three things from day one: a box it can use comfortably, litter it accepts, and a scoop to remove waste every day. A litter mat is the add-on most households find useful early. Liners, covers, specialized trays and disposal accessories are conditional, so you can add them after you see how your cat behaves. The list below covers ten items, grouped by how soon you need them, with the checks that matter before you buy.
Start with the box and its location
Accessories only work if the box itself suits the cat. Choose a box the cat can enter and turn around in comfortably, and place it in a quiet, accessible spot rather than near loud appliances, a busy doorway or the cat’s food and water. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says boxes should be placed in accessible, quiet locations, and its general litter box guidance, published February 18, 2021, is the basis for the setup rules later in this article.
Core items you need from day one
These three items are the only ones the cited veterinary and professional guidance treats as a basic starting setup.
1. Litter scoop
A scoop is the tool you will use most. The Merck Veterinary Manual, in its guidance on providing a litter box for a cat (reviewed July 2025), puts the routine plainly: “You should scoop every day and clean the entire box at least once a week.” A solid scoop with a sifting section that lets clean litter fall through is the practical choice for daily removal. Check that the scoop’s depth and width suit your box, since a scoop that is too shallow for the litter depth will leave waste behind.

2. Unscented, small-particle litter
Litter is a consumable rather than an accessory, but it is the item most likely to decide whether a setup works. Merck notes that many cats prefer small clumping particles and that unscented litter is often recommended because cats can be sensitive to smells. Cats differ, so if your cat avoids a litter, switch back to what it already used and change one variable at a time. Avoid odor powders, sprays and air fresheners as a default. Strong smells can put cats off the box, and they are not needed to keep a box clean if you scoop daily.
3. Mild cleaning supplies
Keep a mild, appropriate cleaner for the weekly full clean. AAHA-aligned guidance points toward mild products and away from strong-smelling chemicals, because residues can deter a cat from using the box. Use a cleaner made for pets or a simple, unscented option, and make sure the box is fully dry before adding litter back in.

Setup item: an extra box
4. A second litter box
An extra box is a setup item rather than a small accessory, but it is the one addition most multi-cat or long-day households need. AAHA’s rule of thumb reads: “one litter box for each cat plus one additional box, or one litter box for each social group plus one additional box, if the number of social groups is known.” In a two-cat home, that means three boxes. The extra box gives a cat an alternative if another cat is nearby or a box is occupied, and it also gives you a backup when one box needs cleaning.

5. Litter-trapping mat
A mat placed outside the box catches litter stuck to paws and reduces tracking across floors. It is a tracking aid, not a hygiene requirement, and it does nothing for odor. Choose one with a textured surface that lets litter fall through, and check that the mat is stable so it will not slide when the cat steps on it. Clean it regularly, since trapped litter and waste dust can build up.
6. Litter box liners
Liners can make emptying easier, but acceptance varies. The Humane Society of Huron Valley, in its guide “Your new cat & the litter box,” says: “Some cats don’t mind having a liner in the litter box, while others do.” Test a liner with your cat before committing. If your cat accepts it, secure it so it cannot shift, bunch up or catch claws. A loose liner can trap a cat’s claws, and a bunched liner can change the texture underfoot enough to put a cat off the box.

7. Waste bags or a disposal pail
Waste bags or a sealed pail are a household convenience for containing scooped waste between cleanings. They are not a veterinary requirement. If you use a pail, choose one with a lid and empty it on a schedule, so waste does not build up in the room where the box sits.

8. Privacy cover or hood
A cover or hood encloses the box and can reduce litter scatter and make the box less visible. Not every cat prefers a covered box, and some cats avoid enclosed spaces, so watch how your cat approaches and enters before buying. If you add one, check that it fits the box’s exact dimensions and that the cat can enter and leave without bumping its head or feeling trapped.
9. Reusable tray
A reusable tray is relevant only to a specific litter-box system. Commercial catalogs list reusable trays as separate products, and they only fit the models they are designed for. Confirm the model number of your box before buying a replacement tray.
10. Compatible waste-bin liners
Some enclosed or self-cleaning systems use proprietary waste-bin liners. These are consumables, and they only work with the systems they are designed for. Check the exact compatibility listed for your model, and budget for the refill cost before choosing a system that depends on them.

When the litter box signals a health problem
If your cat starts eliminating outside the box, a veterinary check comes before any accessory change, because medical conditions can cause litter-box behavior changes. Straining is more urgent. Merck warns that straining in the litter box can signal a life-threatening emergency, especially in male cats. If your cat strains without producing urine or stool, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than adjusting the setup.
