1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGrief after a pet dies is real, it has no fixed timetable, and most people cope best by letting themselves feel it, leaning on people or groups who understand, and getting professional help when the pain stays heavy or starts to disrupt daily life. This guide covers what to expect, practical steps you can take now, how to handle guilt after euthanasia, how children and surviving pets are affected, and which support resources exist and how to check whether they are available to you.
What grief after losing a pet can look like
There is no single normal reaction and no prescribed timeline. Grief can rise and fall. It may bring sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, or anxiety, and it often changes daily routines, such as reaching for a leash that is no longer needed or setting out a bowl by habit. Cornell University’s pet-loss resource page and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) both describe this variability as normal.
How a pet died shapes the experience. Cornell notes that the circumstances of illness or death, including euthanasia, accidental death, violence, or surrender, can affect how grief feels. In practice, people who were present for a difficult decision often carry different questions than people who lost a pet suddenly. Your reaction does not have to match what someone else experienced.
Practical steps that help in the first weeks and months
The following approaches are drawn from Cornell’s pet-loss guidance and a 2024 Ohio State University coping guide. They are options to try, not a checklist you must complete in order.

- THOUGHTFUL PET LOSS SYMPATHY GIFT: A comforting bereavement gift for dog owners and pet parents grieving the loss of a beloved companion.
- Give yourself time without rushing. Grief does not have to be finished by a set date. Ohio State states that there is no standard duration and that pain normally eases with time.
- Be patient and kind to yourself. Self-criticism about crying, forgetting, or not being “over it” tends to add pressure to an already painful loss.
- Talk about your pet and your feelings. Sharing memories and emotions with people who understand the bond is one of the most consistently recommended steps. Ohio State advises facing grief rather than avoiding it through constant distraction.
- Find compassionate people, and set boundaries with those who are not helpful. Some friends and relatives may minimize the loss (“it was just a dog”). You are allowed to limit those conversations.
- Express emotions in another form. Writing, drawing, keeping a journal, or making a memory book can give feelings somewhere to go when speaking is hard.
- Use structured support when it helps. Hotlines, online groups, books, and grief counselors are all options, covered in the sections below.
- Look after basic well-being. Sleep, meals, and time outdoors do not replace grief work, but a depleted body makes emotional strain harder to bear.
Guilt and “what if” questions after euthanasia
Guilt and doubt can follow many kinds of death, including euthanasia, illness, and injury. The AVMA’s 2025 brochure, “When Will the Grief Go Away?”, describes common questions: whether an illness was recognized soon enough, whether treatment was pursued far enough, and whether euthanasia happened too early or too late. The same brochure offers a line worth holding onto: “There is no right or wrong way to feel.” (AVMA pet euthanasia brochure, 2025)
Judging a decision from hindsight, when you now know how things ended, is rarely a fair test of the choice you made with the information you had at the time. Acknowledge the feeling without arguing with it. If the questions keep returning, take them to your veterinarian, who can explain what was known and why decisions were made, or to a qualified counselor who works with pet loss.

When grief needs professional help
Grief is not a condition to be cured, but some patterns justify reaching out to a professional. Ohio State suggests considering professional support in these situations:
- Sorrow or guilt has not diminished after several weeks.
- Grief interferes with your family life, social life, work, or other daily functioning.
- Low mood is profound or lasting. The AVMA recommends professional help for profound or prolonged depression.

Children and other family members
Children understand death differently at different ages, and the approach that helps one child may not suit another. Cornell recommends:
- Honesty. Do not hide the illness or death or use vague language that leaves a child guessing. Explain in simple, accurate terms.
- Invite questions. Let them ask again later, since children often return to a loss over time.
- Listen even when you do not have answers. “I don’t know” is an honest response.
- Allow emotions. Crying, anger, and sudden play can all be part of grief for a child.
- Create remembrances together. Drawing, writing a short story, or sharing favorite memories can include a child in the family’s grieving.
Helping a surviving pet
Other animals in the household may seek more attention, seem anxious or withdrawn, react more strongly to noises or other stimuli, or change their eating, playing, or sleeping. Cornell cautions that some of these changes may reflect shifts in the humans’ emotions and routines rather than the animal’s own grief. Keep the surviving pet’s schedule as consistent as possible and offer calm reassurance.

- is not eating or drinking;
- has changes in urination or defecation;
- has behavior changes that continue rather than settle over time.

When comparing options, consider these trade-offs:
- Phone or online. A phone line gives immediate voice contact but has listed hours. Online groups can be easier to join from anywhere but may have fixed meeting times.
- Peer group or individual counseling. Peer groups offer shared experience with others who have lost animals. Individual sessions allow a private, personalized focus.
- General pet-loss support or specialized support. Some services address general bereavement, while others focus on anticipatory grief, the period before a pet dies, or on decisions about euthanasia.
- Free university resources or paid structured services. Cornell and Ohio State publish free material. Paid programs may offer a set schedule of sessions; confirm cost and structure before enrolling.
Before you contact any service, check its geography (many are U.S.-based), schedule, eligibility, and accessibility needs, and whether it offers peer support or professional mental-health care.
Veterinary social work
Some veterinary hospitals employ social workers. Cornell’s veterinary social-work service supports clients around serious illness, quality-of-life and euthanasia decisions, grief and bereavement, and connection to other resources. It also lists a virtual monthly pet-loss support group for its clients. Ask your own veterinary hospital whether it offers social work, a grief support program, or referrals. Cornell’s service is described at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Social Work.
Crisis support and its limits
Cornell states that its pet-loss hotline is not a mental-health hotline. If grief has left you feeling unable to stay safe, use crisis services. In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or text HOME to 741741 for Crisis Text Line. For a mental-health emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number. Confirm crisis contact details for your location before relying on them, since services outside the U.S. differ.
Books and reading
Cornell lists The Loss of a Pet: A Guide to Coping with the Grieving Process when a Pet Dies by Wallace Sife, Ph.D., for adults. The same page lists other adult books, child-focused books, horse-loss books, and remembrance journals. Reading can help you name what you are feeling and see that others have felt it too, but no book resolves grief on its own. Availability and pricing vary by seller, so check your library or bookseller for current copies.
