Vomiting is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can come from a hairball or a meal the cat should not have eaten, or from a serious illness such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, and some episodes need a veterinary visit the same day.
What nausea looks like in cats
Cats rarely announce that they feel sick. VCA Animal Hospitals describes the signs that often come before vomiting:
- Restlessness or anxiety, including a cat that seems unable to settle
- Lip licking
- Salivation (drooling or excess saliva)
- Repeated swallowing
None of these signs is specific to nausea. Grooming, stress, and mouth problems can look similar. A pattern that repeats over hours or days, especially alongside vomiting or a change in appetite, is more meaningful than a single lip lick.
Vomiting, regurgitation, and coughing: how to tell them apart
Owners often describe any event as “throwing up.” The distinction matters because it changes which causes a veterinarian considers first. Vomiting is forceful and involves abdominal effort. Regurgitation is generally more passive. The comparison below follows the description in VCA’s vomiting guidance.

| Feature | Vomiting | Regurgitation |
|---|---|---|
| Abdominal effort | Forceful abdominal contractions | Usually no abdominal contractions |
| Timing | Not stated in the cited VCA guidance | Usually quick; may happen soon after eating or drinking |
Coughing can also bring up froth, which is easy to mistake for vomit. If you cannot tell which event you saw, record a short video of the behavior. VCA notes that a video can help the veterinary team tell coughing apart from vomiting or regurgitation.
Possible causes of nausea and vomiting
Many conditions can cause vomiting in cats, and no single symptom identifies which one is responsible. The conditions named in veterinary sources fall into three practical groups. Each group is a starting point for a veterinarian’s questions, not a conclusion about your cat.
Digestive and dietary causes
- Intestinal parasites
- Dietary indiscretion, meaning eating food or non-food items the cat should not have
- Hairballs
- Food intolerance or food allergy
- Infection
- Inflammatory bowel disease
Toxins and foreign objects
- Foreign-body obstruction, where something lodged in the gut blocks the passage of food and fluid
- Toxins, including substances the cat ate, licked, or was exposed to
These are the causes where waiting is most risky. If you suspect either one, treat the episode as urgent.

Organ and systemic disease
- Pancreatitis
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Thyroid disease
- Cancer
Vomiting from these conditions often comes with other changes, such as weight loss, thirst, or lethargy. Those accompanying signs are often what prompts testing in the first place.
When vomiting needs a veterinarian
Veterinary sources do not use identical thresholds. The table below shows the duration or frequency each one names as a reason to get an examination.
| Source (date shown) | Pattern that calls for a veterinary exam |
|---|---|
| Merck Veterinary Manual (updated September 2024) | Long-term vomiting, or vomiting more than once or twice daily |
| Cornell Feline Health Center (updated 2021) | Vomiting more than once a week |
| VCA Animal Hospitals (date not shown) | Vomiting that continues beyond one to two days |
Because these thresholds differ, the safest reading is the earliest one that applies to your cat. A veterinarian can set the threshold for an individual animal.

- Fast Vomiting & Nausea Comfort Support: Does your cat retch after meals, bring up food, or leave foamy puddles on the floor? Hairballs, diet changes, fast eating, and a sensitive stomach may trigger occasional vomiting and nausea-like discomfort. Our gentle cat anti vomiting drops help provide fast stomach comfort and support normal digestion, so your cat can settle after meals, keep food down more comfortably, and return to happy purrs
- Effective Cat Hairball Remedy: Cats swallow loose hair while grooming, and keratin-rich strands can collect in the stomach instead of passing normally through the intestines. Keratinase provides targeted enzyme support for hair’s main protein, while psyllium husk and soluble fibers help move swallowed hair through the digestive tract. This dual-action formula supports normal hair passage and hairball-related stomach comfort
- Ultra-Concentrated Probiotic & Herbal Support For Sensitive Stomachs: Frequent vomiting can affect appetite and leave sensitive-stomach cats feeling off. Suitable for kittens, adults, and seniors, it supports comfortable, regular digestion at every life stage
- Tasty & Easy To Feed: Skip the struggle of pills, capsules, or messy powders. The palatable chicken-liver flavored liquid cat remedy for vomiting formula and measured dropper make each serving easy to give directly or mix into a small amount of wet or dry food, even for picky eaters. Made with a gentle, non-irritating formula and no harsh chemical additives, artificial colors, or unnecessary fillers, it keeps daily feeding simple and worry-free
Signs that warrant prompt veterinary care
VCA advises immediate veterinary care when vomiting occurs with fever, lethargy, appetite loss, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dehydration, blood, or a suspected toxin or foreign-object ingestion. Merck and Cornell add several signs that also justify an examination:
- Weakness or depression
- Weight loss
- Changes in thirst or urination
A cat that seems seriously ill, or that may have eaten a toxin or object, needs veterinary care without waiting to see whether the episode passes.

What to expect at the veterinary visit
The workup starts with history and a physical examination. The veterinarian’s findings then guide which tests are needed. In the general sequence described by veterinary sources:
- History: The veterinarian asks about the episodes, your log, diet, and possible exposures.
- Physical examination: This includes checking hydration and abdominal findings.
- Screening tests: Blood, urine, and fecal tests are common first steps, along with radiographs or ultrasound when indicated.
- Specialized procedures: If the cause is still unclear, endoscopy and biopsy can be considered. Surgery is an option in selected cases.

How nausea and vomiting are treated
Treatment is aimed at the cause and at complications such as dehydration. Merck states the general principle this way:
“Whenever possible, control of vomiting is achieved by identifying and eliminating the cause while allowing the digestive system time to recover.”

Fluids and electrolytes
Veterinary sources describe fluids for dehydration or electrolyte problems. Fluid decisions are made by the veterinarian based on the cat’s condition.
Diet under veterinary direction
Easily digested or prescribed diets may be recommended. Feeding changes should be made under veterinary direction, because the right approach depends on the cause.
Prescribed anti-nausea medicines
Some cats need medication to control nausea. These medicines are prescribed by a veterinarian. Do not give human medicines or over-the-counter products, and do not adjust a prescribed dose without asking.
Hospitalization and cause-specific treatment
Serious or persistent illness may require hospitalization, intravenous fluids, and treatment aimed at the underlying condition.

Pancreatitis shows how these pieces fit together. Cornell’s guidance on feline pancreatitis lists hydration, nausea control, pain management, and nutrition as treatment goals. Severe cases may need hospitalization and intensive nutritional support. The page does not show a date in the copy available to this article.
What to do at home while you arrange care
- Keep fresh water available. Do not withhold water.
- Do not give human medicines or any over-the-counter product, and do not induce vomiting.
- Do not start, stop, or change food or treats without your veterinarian’s direction. Some older home-care advice in veterinary references involves temporarily withholding food, but whether that is appropriate depends on the cause.
- If you suspect a toxin or swallowed object, contact your veterinarian right away. Have the product packaging or the name of the plant or object ready.
- Keep the log described above, and bring it to the appointment.
Home care supports the veterinary plan. It does not replace it, and most of the decisions above belong to the veterinary team.
