Xylitol Poisoning in Cats: Signs, Symptoms, and Treatment

Xylitol is far less dangerous to cats than dogs, but cat-specific data are limited. Learn what to check, whom to call, and why you should not induce vomiting at home.

Xylitol is much less dangerous to cats than to dogs, according to the ASPCA. That is not the same as saying it is safe. Feline-specific data are thin: there is no established toxic dose for cats, no confirmed list of cat symptoms, and no xylitol-specific treatment protocol. If you think your cat has eaten xylitol, treat it as a same-day call to your veterinarian or a poison-control service, and keep the product packaging within reach.

What the evidence says about cats

The ASPCA’s position

The ASPCA’s xylitol article, dated September 20, 2017, states: “While xylitol consumption can be dangerous for your dog, it does not cause serious problems in cats or ferrets.” The same article describes low blood sugar and liver injury, but it places those effects in its discussion of dogs. Read it as a statement about cats’ relative risk, not a guarantee that every cat or every product is safe. ASPCA: Xylitol, the Sweetener That Is Not So Sweet for Pets

The small feline study

Merck Veterinary Manual reports a controlled study in six cats given xylitol at 100, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg in separate trials. No hypoglycemia or hepatotoxicity was demonstrated. Six animals is a very small group, and the full study methods were not available for this summary, so treat the result as limited reassurance rather than a safety threshold. Merck Veterinary Manual: Hepatotoxins in Small Animals

Signs and symptoms in cats

No cat-specific symptom pattern is documented in the authoritative sources reviewed. Do not assume a cat with no obvious signs has been exposed without harm, and do not assume a cat with a specific sign has xylitol poisoning. The ASPCA lists the following effects for dogs:

BugMD Flea and Tick Spray for Dogs - Kills & Repels on Contact
  • KILLS & REPELS ON CONTACT: Knock down an active flea and tick problem fast — this plant-powered spray kills fleas and ticks on contact and keeps repelling them on dogs, so you’re not waiting days for a pill or drop to take effect.
  • PLANT-POWERED ESSENTIAL OILS: A working blend of cedarwood, rosemary, geranium, lemongrass, and thyme oils — a plant-powered alternative to harsh chemical collars, pills, and drops when used as directed.
  • SAFE FOR PETS & FAMILY WHEN USED AS DIRECTED: Formulated without permethrin, and gentle enough for dogs, puppies, and senior dogs when diluted and used as directed. Always read the full label and spot-test a small area before full-body application.
  • TREAT THE WHOLE HOME, NOT JUST YOUR PET: Fleas live in your carpets, not only on your animal — spray it on carpets, rugs, pet beds, furniture, floors, baseboards, and kennels to treat the environment, indoors and out, when used as directed.
  • COMPLETE KIT, MAKES 32 OZ: Includes one 16 oz refillable spray bottle and two 3.7 oz concentrate bottles — just add water to make 32 oz of plant-powered flea and tick spray for dogs and home. Refill instead of rebuying, so a little goes a long way.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Weakness and unsteadiness
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Seizures
  • Liver injury

These are dog findings. They are not established as feline signs, and they should not be used to decide whether your cat is affected. Any abnormal behavior after a suspected exposure is a reason to call a veterinarian, and the timing of symptoms has not been established for cats.

What to do if your cat may have eaten xylitol

  1. Find the product and read the ingredient label. Look for “xylitol” in the ingredient list. Keep the packaging so the exact product can be identified.
  2. Estimate the amount and note the time. The ASPCA says exposure assessment depends on the product, the amount ingested, and your cat’s weight. If the amount is unknown, say so; a professional can still assess the risk.
  3. Call your veterinarian or a poison-control service now. In the United States, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is at 888-426-4435. Its poison-control page describes 24/7, 365-day availability and notes that a consultation fee may apply. ASPCA Poison Control
  4. Do not induce vomiting unless a professional directs you to. Merck’s general poisoning guidance says vomiting should not be induced in several situations, including when the animal has no swallowing reflex, is having convulsions, is at risk of aspirating vomit, or when more than a few hours have passed since ingestion. Merck Veterinary Manual: General Treatment of Poisoning
  5. Do not start home treatments. Decontamination and supportive care should be decided by a professional who knows your cat’s weight, the product, and the amount.

How treatment is handled

Merck’s general pet-owner guidance describes the categories of poisoning care: preventing further absorption, supportive treatment, and specific antidotes where they exist. The same guidance states: “Immediate, life-saving measures may be needed initially.” That is general poisoning advice, not a xylitol-specific feline protocol. No antidote specific to xylitol in cats is established in the sources reviewed, so the treatment plan is set by your veterinarian based on your cat’s presentation and the exposure details.

Where xylitol shows up in a household

The ASPCA’s household-products guidance lists the following categories. These are examples, not a complete inventory, and xylitol content varies by product:

  • Gum and mints: sugar-free gum and breath mints, including different flavors of the same brand.
  • Dental products: toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, and breath fresheners. The ASPCA notes that toothpaste xylitol content varies significantly by brand; some contains none, while others contain more.
  • Foods: drink powders, pudding, candy, baked goods, pancake syrup, ketchup, and barbecue sauce.
  • Medications and vitamins
  • Personal-care products: baby wipes, sunscreen, makeup, and lip balm.

The ASPCA’s household-products page is general information and is not designed to assess a time-sensitive exposure. ASPCA: Poisonous Household Products

What is not established

  • A toxic dose for cats
  • A cat-specific symptom profile or symptom timeline
  • Population-level incidence of xylitol poisoning in cats
  • A xylitol-specific treatment protocol for cats

Dog figures should not be used as substitutes for these gaps. Where a cat’s exposure cannot be confirmed as small, the safest assumption is that a professional needs to assess it.
