A cat that vomits once, acts normal afterward, and keeps eating and drinking can often be watched at home. A cat that vomits repeatedly, produces blood, seems weak or painful, or may have swallowed a toxin or object needs a veterinarian promptly. Vomiting is a sign that something is irritating the stomach or intestines or affecting the body more broadly, not a diagnosis in itself, so the same episode can have very different causes in different cats.
How urgent is it? Triage first
Use the situation your cat is in right now to decide what to do. The categories below reflect guidance from Cornell Feline Health Center, VCA Animal Hospitals, and the MSD Veterinary Manual.
| Situation | What it suggests | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Suspected swallowing of a toxin, medication, antifreeze, toxic plant, string, yarn, or another object | Potentially serious exposure, regardless of whether vomiting has started | Contact a veterinarian now. Do not wait for more symptoms. |
| Vomiting with fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dehydration, or blood | VCA advises immediate veterinary care for these combinations | Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic now. |
| Vomiting more than once per week, or any vomiting with weakness, reduced appetite, blood, increased or decreased urination, increased thirst, or diarrhea | Cornell advises prompt evaluation | Book a visit promptly; do not wait for it to pass on its own. |
| One episode in an otherwise bright, eating, drinking, and normal cat | Often a minor, self-limiting upset, such as a hairball or eating too quickly | Monitor closely. If vomiting continues, returns, or your cat changes, call the clinic. |
| Vomiting that persists for one to two days, even if the cat seems fairly well | VCA recommends seeking care at this point | Schedule a veterinary visit. |
Two points matter across every row. First, the time frames are guidance, not permission to delay when warning signs are present. Second, a veterinarian is the right person to decide the workup and treatment, because appearance alone cannot tell you the cause.
Vomiting, regurgitation, or coughing?
Owners often describe all three as “throwing up,” and the difference changes what the veterinarian needs to hear. According to MSD, vomiting is an active process that may involve nausea, repeated swallowing or retching, and forceful contractions of the abdomen. Regurgitation is passive and often brings up undigested food. Coughing can be mistaken for either.

If you are unsure which one you are seeing, record a short video of the episode on your phone. VCA and MSD both note that this can help the veterinarian characterize it.
Possible causes
Causes range from harmless to serious. The sources list the following possibilities. None can be confirmed from the symptom alone.
Hairballs
Cats swallow loose fur while grooming, and some of it can collect in the stomach and come back up as a hairball. Longhaired cats are at greater risk, according to MSD. Occasional hairballs are common, but frequent hairballs or repeated vomiting should not be assumed to be normal, because another gastrointestinal problem may be present.

Diet and dietary indiscretion
Sudden diet changes, spoiled food, table scraps, and eating things outside the normal diet can all upset the stomach. Food intolerance or allergy is also on the list of possibilities, which is why a veterinarian will ask about diet in detail.

Toxins, medications, and swallowed objects
Poisonous plants, human medications, antifreeze, and other household toxins can cause vomiting, as can string, yarn, and other objects that get stuck or create a blockage. These are the situations where waiting is most dangerous. Treat any suspected exposure as urgent.
Parasites and infection
Intestinal parasites and infections can cause vomiting, sometimes alongside diarrhea. Testing, described below, is how these are typically identified.

Gastrointestinal inflammation, constipation, obstruction, and growths
Inflammation of the stomach or intestines, constipation, obstruction, and tumors or growths in the gastrointestinal tract are all possible causes. Obstruction is a reason for prompt assessment because it may need endoscopic or surgical removal.
Diseases affecting other body systems
Vomiting can also be a sign of pancreatitis, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism. In these cases the vomiting is a symptom of a systemic illness, which is why an examination and blood work matter even when the stomach seems to be the only problem.

After the examination, testing may include blood tests, urine and fecal tests, abdominal X-rays or ultrasound. In persistent or difficult cases, endoscopy and biopsy may be used. These tests help separate parasites, metabolic disease, foreign bodies, masses, and intestinal inflammation. Not every cat needs every test, and your veterinarian will choose based on the presentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Treatment depends on the cause
There is no single home remedy for vomiting. Treatment is directed at what the examination and tests reveal, and supportive care is often part of the plan.
Supportive care
Your veterinarian may recommend fluids to correct dehydration or electrolyte problems, anti-nausea medication, and a suitable easily digested diet once vomiting has stopped. Severe or persistent cases may need hospitalization so the cat can be monitored and treated intravenously.

- Aids hairballs in passing through the gastrointestinal tract and helps prevent future formation through regular use
- Includes 2.5 ounces of tasty, salmon flavored formula in a convenient tube
Cause-specific treatment
- Parasites need antiparasitic treatment.
- Toxin exposures need immediate management directed by the veterinary team.
- Obstructions may need endoscopic or surgical removal.
- Infections and metabolic illnesses such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, kidney, or liver disease need treatment for the underlying condition.
What not to do at home
- Do not give human medicines, including over-the-counter products, without veterinary direction.
- Do not try to induce vomiting.
- Do not withhold water. MSD notes that this can worsen dehydration.
- Do not start hairball remedies on your own when vomiting is repeated or unexplained.
- Do not assume that a fasting period is safe as universal home care. Any withholding of food should only be done on veterinary advice.
Brushing and hairballs
Regular brushing removes loose fur before a cat can swallow it, and it may reduce how often hairballs form. A grooming brush is a modest, relevant tool for this purpose only. It does not prevent all vomiting, and it cannot treat unexplained or ongoing vomiting from another cause.
What to bring to the appointment
- How often the vomiting happens, and whether it has been getting more frequent
- What the vomit looks like, including any blood or undigested food
- Recent changes in diet, new foods, or table scraps
- Any plants, medications, or objects your cat might have had access to
- Changes in appetite, thirst, urination, energy, or bowel movements
- A short video of an episode, if you could record one safely
For a broader overview of digestive problems in cats, see the MSD Veterinary Manual entry on vomiting.
