Red light therapy for pets is a veterinary photobiomodulation technique, and its evidence is uneven. Some controlled studies in dogs, mostly for osteoarthritis and wound care, report benefits under specific protocols. The evidence for cats is much thinner, and no study reviewed here shows that a home device is safe or effective for any pet. Treatment should be planned with a veterinarian, because the wrong device or dose can injure the eyes or heat tissue.
What “red light therapy” means in veterinary care
“Red light therapy” is a consumer label. In veterinary medicine the umbrella term is photobiomodulation, which covers a range of light sources, wavelengths, power levels, and treatment schedules. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes photomedicine as a category rather than a single treatment (Merck Veterinary Manual). A systematic review of veterinary laser therapy found wide variation in wavelength, laser class, dose, treatment frequency, and duration, along with variable risk of bias across studies (systematic review).
That variation matters for every question in this article. Two treatments that both emit red light can differ in the dose delivered to tissue, so a result from one protocol does not transfer to another. When a product or clinic describes its light as “red,” that alone does not establish that it matches a protocol that was studied.
What the dog studies show
Most of the controlled evidence comes from dogs with osteoarthritis or non-healing wounds. Each study tested a specific device and regimen, in a specific population, so each result describes that study and nothing broader.

Elbow osteoarthritis
A randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 20 dogs with elbow osteoarthritis. Treated dogs received photobiomodulation therapy over a six-week regimen, and sham-treated dogs received an inactive version. The abstract reports that 9 of 11 treated dogs were able to reduce their NSAID dose, compared with 0 of 9 sham dogs, and that lameness and pain measures improved in the treated group (PubMed study record). This is one small trial. It is encouraging for dogs with similar elbow disease, but it is not a population estimate of how often treatment works.
Hip osteoarthritis
A randomized, double-blinded controlled trial in dogs with hip osteoarthritis reported lower pain levels and improved clinical findings in treated dogs, with outcomes followed at several time points (PubMed study record). The abstract supports a benefit under that protocol. It does not show that every arthritic dog will respond, and it should not be cited as evidence for cats.
Chronic wounds
A randomized controlled trial in dogs with chronic wounds compared a control group with two photobiomodulation groups over a 15-day study period. It reported a significant difference in wound-area reduction between the control and PBMT groups (PubMed study record). The sample was small, and the treatment conditions were specific to that trial.

Canine cognitive dysfunction
A case series of five dogs explored transcranial photobiomodulation for cognitive dysfunction (PubMed study record). Without a control group and with so few animals, it is exploratory. It suggests a question worth testing in a controlled design, and it does not establish that the treatment works.
Open wounds: where the evidence is mixed
The wound picture is not uniformly positive. A more recent prospective, randomized, within-wound controlled trial enrolled 15 client-owned dogs and cats with open wounds. It tested adjunct fluorescence biomodulation against standardized wound management and found no consistent measurable advantage for the adjunct under the conditions tested (full text). Taken together with the chronic-wound dog trial, the honest reading is that light may help some wound patients under some protocols, and that standard wound care remains the baseline any add-on must beat.
A related consensus article on fluorescent light energy practice reached agreement on all 33 statements in its survey (full text). That shows professional agreement about how the approach is practiced. It is not controlled-trial evidence that the approach works, and agreement on statements is not a success rate.

Cats: what is and is not established
The evidence reviewed here contains almost no cat-specific efficacy data. The one trial that includes cats covers open wounds, and it did not show a consistent advantage over standard care. Dog osteoarthritis findings should not be applied to cats. Cats differ in anatomy, pain behavior, and how owners and clinicians assess joint disease, and none of the osteoarthritis trials enrolled cats. If a veterinarian recommends light therapy for a cat, that recommendation rests on clinical judgment and the general principles of photobiomodulation rather than on feline trial results.
Safety: eyes, heat, and patients who need caution
Safety is the part of this topic that most often goes wrong at home. The Merck Veterinary Manual states: “The main risks of laser therapy involve retinal damage and thermal burns when improperly applied” (Merck Veterinary Manual). The same chapter discusses eye protection and invisible infrared emissions, which means a device can emit energy that the person treating the animal cannot see.

- Animals with lymphoma
- Animals taking immunosuppressant medications
- Animals receiving photosensitizing agents
- Young animals, where light is applied over growing long bones
The Merck chapter also notes that ideal dosing remains controversial, and the systematic review points to heterogeneous parameters. Neither source supports a generic home schedule. Home treatment should not be described as inherently safe, and light therapy should not replace diagnosis or conventional care for the underlying problem.

- Diagnosis and goal. Confirm what is being treated and what improvement would look like, such as reduced NSAID need, lower pain scores, or faster wound closure.
- Evidence for that condition and species. Ask whether controlled data exist for this diagnosis in this species, or whether the recommendation is extrapolated.
- Device and wavelength. Ask for the device type, its wavelength, and the power or dose it delivers.
- Dose and schedule. Ask how many sessions are planned, how long each lasts, and how progress will be measured.
- Eye and thermal precautions. Ask who will operate the device, what eye protection is required for the animal and staff, and how skin temperature will be monitored.
- Patient-specific cautions. Review lymphoma, immunosuppressive drugs, photosensitizing agents, and age-related concerns before the first session.
How to compare options
If you are weighing a clinic treatment against a device or another approach, compare them on the same six points: the diagnosed condition and intended outcome; the evidence for that condition and species; device type and wavelength; delivered dose and schedule; operator training and eye and thermal precautions; and the animal’s own risk factors. A device labeled “red light” that cannot answer these questions has not shown that it matches a studied protocol.
Consumer home devices fall outside the veterinary trials discussed here. This article does not evaluate any specific product, and it cannot tell you whether a particular home device delivers a safe or effective dose.

The practical takeaway for dog and cat owners
For dogs with osteoarthritis or certain wounds, controlled studies report benefits under specific protocols, and these are reasons to discuss photobiomodulation with a veterinarian. For cats, the evidence is too limited to support a recommendation on efficacy alone. In both species, eye and thermal safety depend on how the device is used, and the decision should be made with a veterinarian who knows the animal’s diagnosis and health history.
