How to Help Your Cat Get Exercise: Play, Feeding and Home Setup

Get your cat moving with prey-style play, food puzzles, safe perches and a home that invites climbing. Exercise needs depend on the individual cat, and weight plans should involve a veterinarian.

The most reliable way to get a cat moving is to give it things to do that resemble hunting: a toy that moves like prey, meals that take some effort to reach, and a home with safe places to climb, perch and hide. How much activity and how intense it should be depend on the individual cat. The FelineVMA and ASPCA guidance cited here does not specify a fixed number of minutes per day, so treat any exercise target as something to build around your cat rather than a rule to meet.

Start with your cat’s age, energy and physical condition

An ASPCA behavior article on feline enrichment notes that the type and amount of exercise depend on a cat’s age, energy level and physical condition. A playful young cat and an arthritic senior may both benefit from movement, but they will not need the same kind or duration. Follow the cat’s interest and ability. If a cat walks away, hides or stops engaging, shorten the session or change the activity rather than pushing through it.

The same ASPCA article frames the goal in terms of natural behavior. In its words, cats “still very much need outlets to climb, pounce, ambush, and run, just as their ancestors have always done.” That quotation is attributed to Blair de Jong, Feline Behavior Counselor at the ASPCA, and it is a useful test for any plan: if the activity lets the cat stalk, chase, pounce or climb, it is addressing a real need.

Use play that looks like hunting

FelineVMA’s caregiver guide Your Cat’s Environmental Needs: Practical Tips for Cat Caregivers recommends interactive play that imitates prey. Two common approaches are named in that guidance.

Feather wands

A wand with feathers moved through the air invites stalking, chasing and pouncing. Keep the movement varied: flick it low under furniture, pause it, then pull it away. Let the cat catch the toy at least some of the time. Repeated misses can frustrate a cat and make it lose interest, while occasional captures give the hunt a satisfying end.

Toy mice drawn across the floor

A toy mouse pulled across the floor mimics a fleeing animal and encourages the cat to chase and pounce. This works well on hard floors and in short sessions around the house. Like the wand, it should be caught now and then.

Rotating toys

Toys that stay in the same spot all week lose their appeal. FelineVMA advises rotating toys to keep variety. Store a few out of sight and swap them every few days, which is a practical choice rather than a fixed schedule the guidance sets.

Make some meals take effort

Food can be a source of activity as well as nutrition. FelineVMA’s feeding resource, Feline Feeding Programs: Addressing Behavioral Needs to Improve Feline Health and Wellbeing, discusses food puzzles and forage-style feeding as ways to let cats work for food in a way that resembles hunting.

Puzzle feeders and food balls

A puzzle feeder or food ball releases kibble as the cat bats, rolls or manipulates it. The cat has to work for each portion, which adds mental and physical effort at mealtime.

Forage feeding

Forage feeding scatters food or hides it around a room so the cat searches for it. It suits cats that enjoy investigating, though it works best when the cat can reach each spot safely.

Food-based activity should sit inside the cat’s normal feeding plan. FelineVMA says feeding programs should be customized to the household and the individual cat, so count the food from puzzles and foraging as part of the day’s total rather than adding extra calories on top.

Set up the space for climbing and watching

FelineVMA’s guidance on environmental needs names safe places as one of the core requirements for indoor cats. It gives a cardboard box, a carrier or a raised perch as examples of spots where a cat can retreat, observe or climb.

Raised perches and climbing options

An elevated perch gives a cat height and a vantage point. Before installing one, check its stability and whether the cat can reach it comfortably. A cat with reduced mobility may need a lower perch, a step, or a route with fewer jumps. A cat tree or shelf is a reasonable option, but the guidance treats it as a place to rest and observe as much as a workout.

Boxes, carriers and hiding spots

An empty carrier left with its door open, or a cardboard box with a few openings, gives a cat a retreat it can use on its own terms. These spots help cats feel secure, which makes them more willing to move around and play.

Window viewing

The ASPCA’s feline DIY enrichment guidance suggests a comfortable spot near a window as a form of enrichment. Watching birds or outdoor movement gives the cat something to track. Pick a spot with a stable surface and a view the cat can see without strain.

Plan for more than one cat

In multi-cat homes, FelineVMA specifically recommends playing with each cat individually. A group session can lead to competition over a single toy or to one cat dominating the game. Short one-on-one sessions for each cat, with its own toy when possible, let every cat get the chase-and-catch experience without conflict.

Supervise homemade enrichment

Many cat owners make their own toys and setups. The ASPCA’s Feline DIY Enrichment guidance advises close, active supervision of any homemade item. If the cat tries to chew, swallow or ingest part of it, remove the item immediately. Keep DIY play to supervised sessions and retire items that show wear or loose pieces.

Compare the options at a glance

Weight, health and mobility

The ASPCA’s Cat Nutrition Tips describes increased activity as one contributor to weight loss and to weight maintenance. It also advises consulting a veterinarian before starting a weight-loss program. This matters most for an overweight cat, and for any cat whose health or mobility could limit how much it can safely move. A veterinarian can help set a realistic activity level, check whether joints or other conditions need attention, and decide how much of the food used in puzzles and foraging should count toward the daily allowance.

If a cat is suddenly less active, struggles to jump, or shows reduced interest in play that it once enjoyed, schedule a veterinary visit before changing the routine.
