Coat color does not make a cat more affectionate, loyal, playful, or lucky, and the reviewed evidence does not show that it does. The case for adopting a black cat is therefore less about the coat and more about the cat in front of you, and about the fact that some studies suggest black cats may face extra hurdles in shelters. Adopting one can mean giving a home to an animal that might otherwise wait longer, provided you choose it on its own merits.
1. Companionship from an ordinary cat
The most reliable benefit of any cat is companionship. A cat can share a home, respond to its people, and offer a consistent presence through the day. These are attributes of cats in general, and they vary from cat to cat. A black cat gives you the same companionship a cat of any color would, and nothing extra on that front.
2. Possible emotional support
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states in its general cat-care guidance, published June 15, 2026 under the title “Cats | Healthy Pets, Healthy People,” that research has linked cats with emotional support, improved moods, and better morale among their owners. The wording is about association, not a guarantee. Whether a particular cat helps a particular person depends on both of them, and no evidence ties this effect to a black coat.
3. A considered match with an individual cat
Adopting a black cat is a chance to choose an individual animal carefully. The ASPCA’s position statement on the responsibilities of animal shelters describes “conversation-based adoptions,” which it characterizes as matching adopters with companion animals “through dialogue, in a climate of trust and understanding.” Shelter processes differ widely, from little screening to rigid criteria, so the questions you can ask and the steps you must complete will depend on the shelter you approach.

The CDC advises matching a cat’s personality and activity level to the household, any resident animals, and the time available for care. Use the following questions as a starting point:
| Factor | Questions to ask staff or foster carers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Personality and activity level | Is the cat shy, playful, calm, or vocal? How does it behave when handled or approached? | Matches energy and temperament to your home rather than to a coat-color stereotype. |
| Compatibility with people and pets | How has it behaved around children, visitors, dogs, and other cats? | Shapes whether the household can settle together without stress. |
| Health and medical needs | What vaccinations, treatments, or ongoing conditions are on record? | Affects early costs and the vet visit planned after adoption. |
| Known history | How does it use a litter box, travel in a carrier, or eat around other animals? | Reveals practical habits that are easier to plan for in advance. |
| Time and environment | What does the cat need in terms of space, attention, and quiet? | Tests whether your daily schedule can meet those needs. |
4. Giving a shelter cat a home
Shelter need is the most concrete reason to adopt. The ASPCA, with Shelter Animals Count, reports that 5.8 million cats and dogs entered U.S. shelters and rescues in 2025 and that 4.2 million shelter animals were adopted that year. These are full-year national estimates for cats and dogs combined, and the ASPCA notes that local figures may vary from state to state. They do not isolate black cats.

Cat-specific context is more recent. Shelter Animals Count reported one million cat adoptions in the first half of 2026, an increase of 20,000 or 2.1% over the first half of 2025, in a release dated October 6, 2026. The same release notes that more animals entered care than left through adoption, transfer, reunification, or other outcomes, producing a larger-than-usual mid-year increase in animals in care. Whether your local shelter is full or emptying is a question for that shelter, not for national totals.
5. Challenging a stigma the evidence only partly supports
The belief that black cats are harder to place is widely repeated, and it is partly backed by data, though the data are limited. A 2020 peer-reviewed study by Carini, Sinski, and Weber analyzed records for 7,983 cats entering one urban public shelter in Kentucky during 2010 and 2011. In its unadjusted outcome table, black cats had the highest euthanasia percentage (74.6%) and the lowest adoption percentage (10.0%) of the coat-color groups. Overall, however, the association between coat color and outcome was weak to negligible, and the authors described support for “Black Cat Bias” as weak. Because the sample is one shelter from more than a decade ago, these figures describe that shelter’s records, not current national rates.

A 2026 survey study by Villarreal, Gebauer, and Ha asked 1,004 U.S.-based participants to assess shelter-cat photographs. Black cats were rated as less adoptable, and participants were less confident reading their expressions and more often assigned them negative emotions. Superstition and measured skin-color bias did not significantly account for those ratings. This study measured judgments of photographs, not completed adoptions, so it helps explain a possible perception problem rather than measuring how often black cats leave shelters.
Taken together, these sources justify a modest claim: black cats may be judged more harshly on appearance, and at least one shelter’s records showed poorer outcomes. Adopting one is a fair way to push back against that pattern, but it does not prove that every black cat is disadvantaged where you live.

6. Appreciating the cat’s appearance without expecting a personality
A cat’s looks are a legitimate reason to choose it. Many people find a solid black coat striking, and it is a fine reason to fall for a particular cat. What a coat cannot tell you is how the cat will behave. Folklore about black cats, including claims that they are unusually affectionate, playful, or lucky, is cultural belief. A California SPCA article of October 24, 2024 lists such positive traits, but those statements are not controlled evidence about any individual cat. Dark coats also make light-colored fur easier to see on dark furniture, which is a practical point you can weigh for yourself.

If black cats wait longer in some shelters, a prompt, fair look at each one can matter. The same 2020 Kentucky study examined a subsample of 1,219 entirely black cats and found that their October adoption and transfer percentages were comparable to or lower than in other months. That is evidence against an October adoption boost in that dataset, and it does not establish that Halloween is dangerous for black cats.

The idea of a Halloween risk is often tied to a warning that people with bad intentions will adopt black cats for ritual purposes. Becky Robinson, president of Alley Cat Allies, is quoted in the California SPCA article of October 24, 2024 saying, “That’s pure myth. It’s just an old fear that black cats are going to be adopted by people with bad intentions.” That is a secondhand quotation, not a direct interview. The reviewed sources do not substantiate a generalized Halloween danger, so the practical step is simply to ask the shelter how it screens adopters and what it does with cats it receives around holidays.
8. A care routine that supports wellbeing
Choosing a black cat also means committing to a care routine. The following are care reasons and values, not proven health outcomes of coat color. The CDC advises:
- Learning proper care requirements and asking the shelter about food and the cat’s environment before you bring it home.
- Taking a new cat or kitten to a veterinarian within a few days to a week after adoption.
- Cleaning the litter box daily.
- Washing your hands after handling cats, their supplies, or their waste.
Following this routine is what gives a rescued cat its best chance to settle, whatever its coat.
