You show a pet you love it through two things it can count on: time spent together, and reliable everyday care. Food, water, rest, a safe home, veterinary attention, and suitable exercise form the foundation. Attention, play, gentle handling, and enrichment build on that foundation. The list below covers ten practical ways to do both, with notes on where dogs, cats, and other companion animals differ.

Start with the care every pet depends on

The ASPCA’s Criteria for Responsible Care lists the basics of responsible ownership: suitable food and clean water, veterinary care, exercise, social interaction, grooming and training as needed, and protection from hazards. Affection that skips these basics does not hold up well, however much cuddling is involved. The ten actions below assume that foundation is in place.

Ten things you can do

Not every action suits every animal. Treat each one as a starting point you adjust to your pet’s age, health, temperament, and species.

1. Give focused, predictable attention every day

A short, regular period of undivided attention matters more than an occasional long session. Choose a time that fits your routine, such as a few minutes after breakfast or before bed, and keep your phone out of reach while you do it. Watch what your pet does with that time. Some animals come to you, while others prefer to sit nearby. Both are ways of spending time together.

2. Make time for activities your pet enjoys

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) lists walking, playing, petting, and grooming as possible activities for dogs. Its guidance also cautions against leaving a social dog without interaction or outlets for activity. Learn which of these your pet actually enjoys. A dog that loves a walk may not enjoy a long game of tug, and the reverse is also true.

3. Offer safe physical activity suited to health and ability

Exercise supports both body and mood, but the right amount depends on the individual. No single duration or intensity applies to all pets. Puppies, senior animals, animals with joint problems, and animals recovering from illness each need a different plan. If you are unsure what is safe, ask your veterinarian before you increase activity.

Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves

4. Add enrichment that encourages natural behavior

The AVMA’s National Pet Week guidance suggests puzzles, games, interactive toys, and learning new skills as ways to encourage natural behaviors such as sniffing, foraging, and problem-solving. Enrichment is an optional tool. It does not replace companionship or care, and you do not need to buy anything to offer it. A puzzle feeder is one example, and a few kibble pieces hidden in a folded towel can serve a similar purpose.

5. Teach a skill with rewards in short, positive sessions

Learning a new cue, such as “touch” or “sit,” gives many animals a satisfying way to spend time with you. Keep sessions brief, often under a few minutes, and end while the animal still wants to continue. Reward the behavior you want with something your pet values, whether that is a treat, a favorite toy, or quiet praise. If a session stops being fun, stop it and try again later.

6. Let your pet start and end contact

Affection feels different to every animal. Cornell’s guidance on veterinary visits for dogs advises owners not to force handling and to let a dog walk away if it feels uncomfortable. Offer your hand, a scratch on the chest, or a gentle touch on the side of the body, then notice whether your pet leans in, relaxes, or moves toward you. Stop when it turns away, freezes, or leaves. Respecting that choice builds trust.

7. Build grooming and handling gradually

Where grooming is needed, Cornell’s February 2026 guidance on cooperative grooming care describes practice at the dog’s own pace, paired with positive reinforcement. Start with a brief touch on a paw or ear, reward the calm response, and gradually add steps such as brushing or nail trimming. Pause when you see stress signals such as lip-licking, yawning, pulling away, or stiffening. Come back to that step on another day. Cats need their own approach. Cornell’s guidance on choosing and caring for a new cat recommends regular coat care suited to the cat and nail care.

8. Keep food, water, rest, and home safe

Caring for a pet is an everyday expression of affection. Provide fresh water, a balanced diet suited to the animal’s life stage, and a quiet place to rest. For cats, Cornell recommends life-stage-appropriate complete nutrition. Check your home for hazards such as toxic plants, medications within reach, loose cords, and unsecured exits. Feeding quantities vary widely by species, size, age, and activity, so ask your veterinarian for an amount that fits your pet.

9. Keep up preventive veterinary care

Regular checkups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and dental attention protect your pet’s health over time. Keep a calendar of appointments and write down any changes in appetite, weight, energy, bathroom habits, or behavior. Ask your veterinarian which schedule and which tests suit your pet’s age and health. If a visit causes your pet distress, tell the clinic in advance so staff can plan a calmer appointment.

When to contact a veterinarian or qualified professional

Affection does not replace medical or behavioral assessment. Contact your veterinarian promptly if your pet shows any of the following:

  • Signs of pain, such as limping, reluctance to be touched in one area, or changes in posture
  • Illness, including vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, or lethargy
  • Marked fear, aggression, or avoidance that is new or getting worse
  • Persistent behavior concerns that do not improve with routine changes

For training or handling support, look for a qualified professional who uses humane, reward-based methods. Cornell advises seeking veterinary or humane-training help when an animal’s discomfort during handling continues.

Affection shows up in the details of daily life: the routine you keep, the games you share, the way you respond when your pet asks for space or closeness. Begin with one or two of these actions, and add others as you learn what your particular animal enjoys.
