Businesses, foundations and individuals usually help animals in one of two ways: by partnering with an animal-welfare organization on its fundraising, awareness or employee-giving programs, or by supporting shelter and rescue collaboration, where organizations share placement work, training, grants or direct services. Both routes exist, but they work differently, have different entry points, and are governed by different rules. This guide explains each one, shows how the major organizations describe their own programs, and lists what to confirm before you commit.
Most of the official examples below come from U.S.-based organizations, with one Canadian example from Montreal. Program names, eligibility and acceptance processes differ between organizations and change over time, so treat the details here as a starting point and confirm current terms directly with each group.
Two kinds of partnership, two different starting points
The phrase “partnering with animals” covers two very different relationships. In the first, a company or foundation supports an animal-welfare organization, usually with money, goods, services, employee time or promotion. In the second, shelters, rescue groups and public animal-care agencies work with each other or with a larger national nonprofit to move animals, share expertise and fund care. The table below compares them.
| Feature | Business or foundation support | Shelter and rescue collaboration |
|---|---|---|
| Typical partner | Companies, foundations, employers, sponsors | Shelters, rescue groups, breed rescues, public animal-care-and-control agencies |
| What flows to the animals | Donations, sponsorship, goods or services, employee volunteer hours, awareness | Animal placement and transport, shelter medicine training, grants, direct services, policy and best-practice sharing |
| How you usually start | Contact the nonprofit’s partnerships or development team, or submit a written proposal | Submit an application to the network or program, which is then reviewed before staff follow up |
| Main limitation | The nonprofit may decline a proposal or limit it to a specific program | Eligibility is set by the program, and not every organization qualifies |
Corporate and business routes
Animal-welfare organizations describe several formats that businesses can use. Which ones are open to you depends on the nonprofit’s program structure and its acceptance process, so the list below describes what organizations say they offer rather than a guarantee.

Sponsorship and cause marketing
Sponsorship places a company’s name alongside a program, event or campaign. Cause marketing ties a product or promotion to a donation, such as a percentage of sales or a one-for-one arrangement. The ASPCA’s strategic cause-partnership page says these partnerships raise awareness and revenue for animal-welfare programs, and it invites proposals for large-scale national cause-marketing partnerships. The page lists Subaru, Walker’s Shortbread, ARM & HAMMER and FedEx as examples of its partners. Those examples describe past or existing relationships; they do not mean those companies are offering new deals or that any of them has an affiliate arrangement.
Cause-marketing campaigns often involve commercial co-venture requirements, such as minimum donation levels, campaign dates, or rules for how the nonprofit’s name can be used in advertising. Ask for these in writing before you launch anything.
Workplace giving and employee engagement
Several organizations describe employee programs as a separate route from corporate sponsorship. Best Friends Animal Society lists employee engagement and workplace giving among its corporate partnership options. The Montreal SPCA describes workplace giving and corporate volunteering, and the North Shore Animal League America describes adoption-related and awareness efforts that employees can join. Employee programs are often the easiest first step because they do not require a company-level agreement to start.

In-kind donations and services
The Montreal SPCA accepts gift-in-kind donations, and The Animal Foundation says companies can offer products or services in kind. In-kind giving is only useful when it matches what the organization can actually store, distribute and use, so it should be arranged directly with the recipient. The checklist later in this guide covers how to check that.

Humane World for Animals’ Shelter and Rescue Partner program
Humane World for Animals describes its Shelter and Rescue Partner program as a network in which organizations serve as a safety net for pets and as mentors for overwhelmed shelters. The page lists three types of eligible organization:
- Registered U.S. 501(c)(3) humane organizations
- Organizations affiliated with national or regional breed rescue associations
- Public animal-care-and-control agencies
Partners collaborate on animal placement, policy and best practices. Humane World says some partners may be eligible for a Chewy pet-food donation program, and that it covers the shipping costs for that program. Applications are invited through the program page, and staff contact applicants after review. Eligibility for the food program is not automatic; it depends on the partner’s status and the program’s own requirements.
ASPCA partner support for shelters
The ASPCA’s 2024 annual report describes its partner support in four areas: relocation and placement, shelter medicine training, grant funding and direct services. The report also says its food-distribution partnerships have provided more than 4.3 million pet meals since 2017. That is a cumulative figure for ASPCA food-distribution partnerships, as stated on its 2024 annual-report page, and it should not be read as a single-year total or as a measure of any individual partner’s results.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to approach an animal organization
The steps below apply to companies and foundations. Shelters and rescues should follow the application process named on the relevant program page.
- Choose the program type you want: sponsorship, cause marketing, employee giving, in-kind goods or a fundraising event.
- Find the organization’s partnership or corporate-giving page and note whether it asks for a written proposal, an application or a direct contact.
- Write a short proposal that names the program you want to support, the amount or type of support, the timeline and how you will report results.
- Ask the organization which of its programs your offer fits and whether it has a current need in that area.
- If the arrangement is a cause-marketing or co-venture campaign, request the terms in writing, including donation levels, dates and any rules for using the nonprofit’s name.
- Agree on how the nonprofit will report results and how your business will receive recognition.
Checklist for in-kind donations
- Confirm that the recipient can store and distribute the item, including shelf life, space and refrigeration needs.
- Ask for the current wish list or request in writing; do not assume a product is needed.
- Arrange delivery or shipping in advance. Some programs cover shipping costs, but this is set by the program and is not universal.
- Ask whether the donation will be recognized publicly and what wording the nonprofit will use.
- Keep records of what was given, when and to whom, and ask for an acknowledgment letter.
What to confirm before you agree
- Whether the organization is registered in your jurisdiction, and what its tax-status documentation says. Ask your accountant how a gift will be treated for your business.
- Who may use the organization’s name and logo, and for how long.
- Whether any promised reach, sales or outcomes are written into the agreement or are only expectations.
- How long the arrangement lasts and how either party can end it.
- Who at the nonprofit is your contact for the program, and how results will be shared.
Partnership terms are negotiated case by case. Treat any published example, including the partners named on this page, as evidence that an organization runs these programs, not as a template for your own deal.
