Cats appear able to tell a familiar human odor from an unfamiliar one. What science has not yet shown is that smell alone lets a cat identify a particular owner. The most direct evidence comes from a 2025 study in PLOS ONE by Miyairi and colleagues, which measured how long cats sniffed different human odor samples. The result is real and worth knowing, but it answers a narrower question than the one most owners are asking.
What the 2025 study tested
In the paper “Behavioral responses of domestic cats to human odor,” researchers presented cats with three kinds of sample:
- The owner’s odor, from a person the cat lives with.
- An unknown person’s odor, from someone the cat had no relationship with.
- A blank control, which contained no human odor.
The behavioral measure was sniffing duration. Investigating a sample for longer is a common way to gauge interest in a novel stimulus, and that is the main thing the study recorded. The full paper is available at PMC12118816. The abstract the study was checked against does not report how many cats took part, so treat the result as a single study rather than settled fact.
What the result shows
Cats spent substantially longer sniffing the unknown person’s odor than the owner’s. That difference is what makes the study meaningful: it shows cats respond differently to familiar and unfamiliar human scent. In plain terms, the evidence supports odor discrimination, meaning a cat can register that two human scents are not the same.

It does not, on its own, show individual identification, meaning a cat looking at a scent and recognizing it as one specific person. The authors said as much. Their closing caveat reads: “However, this relationship warrants further investigation along with the theory of whether cats are able to recognize a specific person from olfactory cues.”
What the study does not show
- It does not measure affection. Longer sniffing of a stranger’s scent is not evidence that a cat loves or bonds with its owner. The authors reported no association between the observed behavior and the cat-owner relationship score.
- It does not isolate nostril use as a bond signal. The paper reports lateralized nostril use when cats responded to unfamiliar human odors. That is a description of how the cats sniffed, not a marker of attachment.
- It does not show smell is the only cue. The experiment removed everything except odor. Everyday recognition involves sight, sound, and routine, and this study did not test how these combine.
Cats discriminate other cats by scent
Olfaction does carry social information for cats. Its role with other cats is better documented than its role with people, which is why it is a useful background for the human study. These studies test other cats, not people, so they support the general role of smell without answering the owner question directly.

Anal-sac secretions
A 2019 study in the Journal of Chemical Ecology found that cats discriminated between individual anal-sac secretion odors. The authors reported individual variation in the volatile chemical profiles of these secretions and discussed short-chain free fatty acids as possible information-carrying compounds. Urine odors
A separate 2019 study reported that cats discriminated individual conspecific urine odors in habituation-dishabituation tests. Odor profiles changed with sample age and differed between individual cats, and cats could detect temporal changes as well as individual differences. See the PubMed record.

Voice is a separate channel
Cats can also tell people apart by sound. A 2013 study in Animal Cognition by Saito and Shinozuka tested 20 domestic cats. Of those 20, 15 showed a lower response to the third voice than to the first, a pattern that suggests habituation to repeated voices. Habituated cats also showed a rebound response when they heard their owner’s voice. The authors read this as evidence that cats can use vocal cues alone to distinguish people. The 15-of-20 figure describes this small sample and should not be read as a population estimate. See the PubMed abstract.
Voice and smell are separate findings. The voice study says nothing about scent, and the scent study says nothing about voice.

Household scent is part of the picture
Veterinary behavior guidance from the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) and the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) describes a collective odor shared by cats in a social group, including cats living with people. Bringing in a new person, a pet, furniture, or other objects can change that shared scent environment. The guidance notes this may stress some cats enough to contribute to urine marking. That is a useful explanation for why a home’s scent can matter to a cat, but the guidance is about household scent and behavior, not about owner recognition. The studies above cannot answer this completely. The human-odor study isolated smell, the voice study isolated sound, and neither tested sight or daily routine. Because no study compares these cues together in everyday life, the evidence cannot rank them. A cat recognizing you at the door most likely draws on several cues at once, but the cited work does not measure how much each one contributes.

What this means for owners
- Cats can distinguish a familiar human scent from an unfamiliar one in controlled odor tests. That is the strongest scent-specific finding so far.
- Longer sniffing of a stranger’s odor is not a sign of affection or a weaker bond with you.
- Changes in household scent, such as new visitors, pets, or furniture, are documented as a possible source of stress for some cats, which is a practical reason to introduce changes gradually.
- No product has been shown to help a cat recognize you. The studies here tested natural odor samples and voices, not commercial scent items, so there is no evidence for buying one for this purpose.
Cats are sensitive to smell, and they do notice the difference between familiar and unfamiliar people. Science has not yet confirmed that scent alone identifies one particular owner.
