A wart-like bump on a cat is not automatically a papilloma, and it cannot be sorted into a harmless or dangerous category by looking at it. Feline papillomavirus can be linked to several different kinds of lesion, some benign and some precancerous or malignant. A veterinarian needs to examine the growth, and usually to sample it, before anyone can say what it is or whether it needs treatment. Most of these lesions have no specific antiviral treatment, some regress on their own, and invasive squamous cell carcinoma is the situation where complete surgical removal is usually the main option.
Why “papilloma” is a loose label in cats
Owners often use “papilloma” or “wart” for any raised, crusty, or fleshy growth. In veterinary medicine the term has a narrower meaning, and feline papillomavirus (FcaPV) is linked to a range of lesions that look different and behave differently. The 2023 review “Canine and feline papillomaviruses: an update”, published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, describes papillomas, viral plaques, Bowenoid in situ carcinomas, and feline sarcoids associated with papillomaviruses, and notes that these conditions differ in risk and appearance.
Lesion types and what they mean
The table below summarizes the lesion categories described in the sources. The virus associations are reported links from published case material, not a key for identifying the cause of a specific cat’s growth.

How rare are cat warts?
Cat papillomas are uncommon compared with the warts seen in dogs. The 2023 review counted only three reported cutaneous wart cases in cats at the time of its writing, and noted that oral warts are rarely reported. These figures come from published case reports, so they describe what has been written up, not how often the condition occurs in cats overall.
How cats acquire papillomavirus
Papillomaviruses infect the surface layer of skin and mucous membranes. Infection is thought to begin when virus enters through a break in the epithelium, such as a skin abrasion, which is why the 2023 review frames lesions as a consequence of tissue damage that lets the virus in. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s cat-owner guidance on tumors of the skin in cats (last updated June 2026) also describes direct contact and possible transmission through contaminated surfaces such as bedding, dishes, collars, leashes, or toys.

Viral DNA has been found in healthy skin as well as in lesions. That means finding papillomavirus on a cat does not prove that the virus caused a particular growth. Whether a lesion is driven by the virus has to be judged from the tissue itself.
Why a positive viral test is not enough
Because the virus can be present in normal skin, the result of a viral test has to be read alongside the lesion. A detected virus with a benign-looking growth does not establish the diagnosis, and a negative viral test does not rule out a lesion that looks suspicious on examination. Owners should expect the veterinarian to interpret viral results together with the appearance and microscopic findings.

How a veterinarian reaches a diagnosis
A new, changing, persistent, or ulcerated growth should be examined by a veterinarian, because appearance alone cannot reliably classify a lesion. The European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases (ABCD) guidelines, in their 2013 guidance on feline viral papillomatosis, list the following diagnostic approaches:
- Histopathology: a biopsy examined under the microscope, looking for characteristic cell changes.
- Viral antigen detection in the biopsy: showing that viral protein is present in the lesion.
- Electron microscopy: looking for virus-like particles in tissue.
- PCR detection of viral DNA: identifying the virus’s genetic material.
The ABCD’s 2025 review, “Feline Papillomatosis,” describes histologic cell changes together with intralesional viral antigen or DNA detection as diagnostic support, which is why a biopsy usually gives more information than a visual check.

Treatment: what is and is not established
There is no specific treatment for papillomavirus-induced skin lesions, and spontaneous regression can occur. The sources reviewed do not establish a universal timeline for regression, and they do not provide a rule that tells owners whether a given growth will go away on its own. Because of this, a veterinarian should decide between monitoring and removal based on the diagnosis.
Where invasive squamous cell carcinoma is present, complete surgical excision should be considered if it is feasible. The reviewed sources do not describe a standard feline over-the-counter treatment for papillomavirus lesions. Human wart removers, home remedies, and unproven supplements should not be used on a cat’s growth, since they may irritate the lesion or delay a proper diagnosis.

When to contact a veterinarian promptly
- A new growth, or one that is getting larger or changing shape or colour.
- A growth that stays present for a long time without improving.
- A growth that is ulcerated, bleeding, or crusted over.
- Growths on the nose or on skin exposed to sunlight, where the 2023 review links some squamous cell carcinomas to specific virus types.
- Any lesion in the mouth, since oral papillomavirus lesions are reported in the literature.
Bring the cat in for an examination rather than waiting to see whether the growth changes. Your veterinarian can decide whether a biopsy, viral testing, or both are needed.
