Tom&Sawyer is a frozen, gently cooked cat food sold directly to customers in Canada. The strongest independent endorsement is a 7.8 out of 10 overall score from Cats.com, but that review covers an older recipe lineup than the brand now shows. For a healthy adult cat whose household can store and thaw frozen meals, it is a credible option to evaluate. For a cat prone to weight gain, or any cat with a medical condition, talk with a veterinarian first and confirm the nutrition statement on the exact recipe before ordering.

Where Tom&Sawyer cat food is sold

The brand’s help-centre FAQ states that cat meals are currently available only in Canada, so the rest of this review applies to Canadian ordering. Orders are placed through the brand’s own website. The Canadian homepage offers a meal-plan quiz that asks about age, weight, body condition and dietary needs, and then guides you to a recipe.

No retail store or marketplace listing was confirmed for this review. Treat direct ordering from the brand as the only verified purchase route.

Which recipes are on the menu now

The current Canadian site visibly names three cat recipes: Bento Box, Chicken Cacciatore and Wild West Kangaroo. This article does not treat that list as the complete range. The independent review published by Cats.com (by Carlotta Cooper, last updated February 6, 2026) assessed a different set of recipes, so its figures apply only to the products it names.

Recipe Named on current Canadian menu page Covered by Cats.com review (updated Feb 6, 2026) Calories reported by that review
Bento Box Yes No Not stated
Chicken Cacciatore Yes No Not stated
Wild West Kangaroo Yes Yes 1,000 kcal/kg
Scared-y Cat Not named on the menu page reviewed Yes 1,334 kcal/kg

The calorie figures are the reviewer’s reported values for those recipes on the date of that review. They are not confirmed against current packages. Recipe-level ingredient lists and nutrient analyses for the three currently named recipes could not be verified for this article, so read the label on the package you receive.

Life stage and nutritional adequacy

What the brand claims

The brand’s FAQ says its meals meet or exceed AAFCO nutrient profiles, and that its cat recipes are labeled for All Life Stages or Adult Maintenance. Cats.com also reports adequacy statements for the recipes it reviewed. These are manufacturer and reviewer statements; check the statement printed on each package.

The brand’s standards page reproduces a general statement attributed to Dr. Joe Inglis, BVSc, MRCVS, about the value of high-quality, responsibly sourced ingredients. It describes the company’s philosophy. It is not an independent endorsement of this product.

What the life-stage labels mean

  • All Life Stages: the AAFCO statement covers growth (kittens) as well as adult maintenance, so the recipe can be fed across life stages if the package says so.
  • Adult Maintenance: intended for adult cats only. It is not intended for kittens or for pregnant or nursing cats.

What the brand does not claim

The FAQ states that Tom&Sawyer does not sell veterinary prescription or therapeutic diets, and recommends discussing the diet with a veterinarian when a cat has a medical condition. A complete and balanced label describes a diet that meets nutrient profiles for a life stage. It does not mean the food treats a disease.

Independent review scores

Cats.com awarded Tom&Sawyer 7.8 out of 10 overall. These are the reviewer’s rubric scores for the products it assessed, not laboratory results or a universal quality measure.

Fat, calories and fit for individual cats

Cat Food Advisor’s assessment of the fresh range describes the food as high in moisture, relatively high in protein and fat, and lower in carbohydrate than typical fresh cat food. It warns that the fat level may not suit cats prone to weight gain or with a sedentary lifestyle. That is one publisher’s comparison, not a prescription for an individual animal.

Best Value
I AND LOVE AND YOU Naked Essentials Dry Cat Food, Salmon & Trout | 11lb
  • Fish is #1 Ingredient - Since the dawn of time, cats have loved their protein—so that’s why this dish is packed with delicious, crunchy bites of the good stuff: sustainably-sourced salmon and trout.
  • Protein-Rich - Packed with 34% protein! This bag of kibble boosts your pet’s energy and helps them maintain lean muscle mass.
  • Pre & Probiotics for Easy Digestion - Nature’s mighty little biotics work hard to ensure your pet’s gut is in tiptop shape.
  • Holistic Nutrition - Added with care and approved by our in-house holistic vet, Dr. Angie. These handpicked, balanced ingredients nourish the body from head to paw.
  • Filler Free - We don’t use fillers to bulk out your pet’s food to help us save a buck or two. There’s no nutritional value and it can contribute to obesity and lethargy. #Nope

Energy density also varies between recipes. Using the reviewer’s figures, a cat that needs 250 kcal a day would eat about 250 g of Wild West Kangaroo (1,000 kcal/kg) but about 187 g of Scared-y Cat (1,334 kcal/kg). Weigh portions rather than scooping by volume, and adjust them to your cat’s weight and activity with your veterinarian’s input.

Frozen storage and thawing

The brand describes its food as gently cooked and flash-frozen, so the meals arrive frozen and need freezer space. The Cats.com reviewer reported the following handling steps for the products it ordered. Follow the directions printed on your package, which take precedence.

  1. Move the sealed packet to the refrigerator and thaw it overnight.
  2. If you need it sooner, thaw the sealed packet under warm water.
  3. Refrigerate any leftovers and use them within four days, as the reviewer reported.

Recall history

Cats.com reviewers found no Tom&Sawyer recalls in Canada or the United States, and Cat Food Advisor also reports none. These are the reviewers’ findings, not a regulator’s guarantee that no recall has ever occurred. Before ordering, check the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s recall notices for current status.

Cost

No current price for any recipe was verified for this article, and shipping terms were not confirmed either. The review’s prices are historical, so use the live prices on the brand’s site. To compare value fairly, calculate the cost per 1,000 kcal:

  • Total kilocalories in the package = package weight in kg × kcal/kg on the label.
  • Cost per 1,000 kcal = package price (including delivery) ÷ total kilocalories × 1,000.

For example, at a hypothetical price of $20 per kilogram, a 1,334 kcal/kg recipe costs about $15 per 1,000 kcal. Use the price and calorie values from the package you actually buy.

Who Tom&Sawyer suits, and who should look elsewhere

  • Likely a good fit: healthy adult cats, owners with freezer and thawing space, and households that want a recipe with a published life-stage statement.
  • Discuss with a veterinarian first: cats prone to weight gain (see the fat section above), kittens or pregnant or nursing cats where the life-stage label may not match, and any cat with a medical condition.
  • Look elsewhere: cats that need a prescription or therapeutic diet, since the brand says it does not sell those, and households that cannot store frozen food or live outside Canada.

Before you order

  1. Confirm that delivery is available to your Canadian address.
  2. Open the recipe page and note the life-stage label and the AAFCO statement.
  3. Check the kcal/kg figure on the package and calculate a daily portion for your cat’s weight.
  4. Talk with your veterinarian if your cat has a medical condition or needs weight management.
  5. Compare cost per 1,000 kcal, including shipping, before choosing a recipe.
