A black cat crossing your path does not bring bad luck. That idea is a superstition with a history, not a property of cats and not a predictor of what happens next. Black cats have been viewed as unlucky in some European traditions and as lucky in others, so the belief depends on where and when you look. The one area where black cats may face a real disadvantage is shelter adoption, and the evidence there is narrower than popular claims suggest.
Why a black cat crossing your path doesn’t cause misfortune
A superstition describes a link between two events that has no mechanism behind it. A cat walking in front of you is an ordinary event. Nothing about its coat color changes the day, your job, or your health. When something goes wrong after a black cat appears, the timing is coincidence, and the folklore supplies the explanation after the fact. Treating the cat as the cause is the core of the myth.
How black cats have been viewed in different traditions
Black-cat symbolism is not one story repeated everywhere. Two historical strands show how far the meaning has moved.
| Tradition | Where and when | What the black cat signified | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Devil and black-cat rumors | Europe; the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County places the origin in the 1200s | Negative: the Devil was said to take black-cat form | Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County |
| British shipboard tradition | British maritime folklore; the source excerpt does not give a date | Positive: a black cat aboard a ship could be considered lucky | National Library of Medicine, 2018 |
The 1200s date is a museum summary, not a verified single origin for every black-cat belief in every place and period. The maritime example is useful precisely because it cuts against the claim that black cats have always been unlucky. Both entries are best read as separate strands of folklore rather than a single timeline.

What the shelter evidence shows, and what it does not
The question that matters most for a living cat is not folklore but whether coat color affects how long shelter cats wait for homes. Three sources bear on that question, and each has limits.
A 2024 study of Czech shelters
A 2024 article in PubMed Central, titled “Explicit and Implicit Measures of Black Cat Bias in Cat and Dog People”, reviews beliefs about black cats and earlier adoption research. The excerpt available for this article refers to shelter records covering 2,170 cats from Czech shelters. It reports that darker-coated cats, not only black cats, stayed in shelters about one month longer than lighter-coated cats.

That is a finding about those shelters, in that population. It is not a current U.S. figure, it is not a general rate for all shelters, and it does not show that superstition causes the gap. The excerpt did not expose the full methods, so readers should treat the one-month difference as a sample-specific observation.
Colorado State University’s 2013 release
A Colorado State University news release from 24 October 2013, titled “For Black Cats, Superstition ain’t the Way”, discusses how people perceive black cats. It notes that even a few extra days in a shelter may matter for a cat’s welfare. The release does not establish that every black cat waits longer, or that coat color alone decides adoption.

Halloween adoption holds
The National Library of Medicine article describes shelters that have delayed black-cat adoptions around Halloween because of fears that the cats could be abused in ritual settings. The same account cautions that these fears are not statistical evidence of widespread harm. A hold is a decision by one shelter about one risk. It should not be read as proof that a common danger exists across all shelters.
What no current figure establishes
No broadly representative, current black-cat adoption rate was verified for this article. Any statement that black cats are always adopted last, or that a specific percentage of them wait longer in the United States, goes beyond the evidence. If you need a figure for a particular shelter, ask that shelter for its own intake and adoption data.

If you are considering adopting a black cat
Coat color is a poor guide to a cat’s temperament or health. The practical steps are the same for any cat:
- Meet the cat in person at a local shelter or rescue. Best Friends Animal Society encourages readers to meet cats before adopting, as described in its black-cat myths feature.
- Check the organization’s current adoption and fostering information directly, because listings and policies change locally.
- Ask whether the shelter has any holiday or seasonal adoption policy, such as a Halloween hold, and why.
- Ask staff about the cat’s history, behavior with people and other animals, and any health notes.
- Consider fostering if adoption is not possible yet. American Humane encourages adoption or fostering through local shelters and rescues, as noted in its National Black Cat Day materials.
Choosing a black cat carries no bad luck. The belief that it does is a story, and the cat that is waiting for a home is the one that needs the help.
