The Benefits of Your Vet Using AI Scribing and What Questions to Ask

An AI scribe in the exam room can reduce typing and help build a fuller visit record, but the benefits are workflow expectations, not measured results. Here is what to expect and what to ask.

When your vet uses an AI scribe, a device in the room, usually a tablet and occasionally a laptop, captures the consultation and produces a draft record. The intended benefit is that your vet spends less time typing and more time looking at your pet and talking with you, while the written record picks up more of the symptoms, findings, and care plan. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), in owner-facing guidance published June 20, 2025, describes these as possible workflow benefits. No measured gain in time saved, documentation accuracy, or patient outcomes has been established. Your vet remains responsible for the record and for every clinical decision, which is why the questions below matter.

What changes during the visit

According to AAHA, the tool helps veterinary staff capture the full discussion and prepare more comprehensive records. The point is that the veterinarian can listen and respond to you and your pet without worrying about typing every detail. In practice, you may notice a few things:

  • A microphone-equipped device, typically a tablet and sometimes a laptop, placed in the exam room.
  • Your vet repeating a detail or summarizing what you said so the system captures it correctly. This is a deliberate step to make the record accurate, not a sign that something is wrong.
  • No reduction in your role. Using a scribe should not stop you from describing symptoms, behavior changes, or worries, or from asking questions.

Benefits described, and what the evidence does not show

The benefits below come from AAHA’s description of how the tools are meant to be used. They are expectations about workflow, not results that have been measured in veterinary practice.

Benefit described What it means for you What is not established
Less typing during the consultation Your vet can give more eye contact and attention to your pet during the visit. No measured amount of time saved, in minutes or as a percentage, has been published in the sources reviewed.
A more complete record of the discussion Symptoms, observations, and the agreed care plan are more likely to be written down in full. No figure shows how often notes are complete or how much detail is missed without a scribe.
Focus on the pet and owner The consultation can feel less like data entry for your vet. Effects on your pet’s diagnosis or treatment outcome have not been demonstrated.

Avoid assuming that an AI scribe improves diagnosis, treatment, or documentation accuracy. The available guidance supports the workflow benefits above and nothing stronger.

Accuracy and who is responsible for the record

A scribe can save typing, but the draft it produces can omit or misstate details. A tool that summarizes a fast conversation may drop a remark about appetite, or attach a symptom to the wrong animal in a multi-pet household. This is why accuracy depends on a human check, not on the software alone.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) expects clinical and client records to remain clear, accurate, and detailed. Its advice for the profession states that AI-generated transcripts or summaries should be manually verified, with any necessary edits made at the time of the consultation rather than later. The RCVS also stated in its Spring 2026 Standards and Advice update that veterinary professionals may use tools to facilitate care, but professional judgment cannot be entirely outsourced to AI.

The Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria, Australia, takes the same position from a different angle. Its guidance on using AI tools says practitioners remain responsible for medical records, diagnoses, and other procedures carried out with AI assistance. It also names accuracy, reliability, cybersecurity, privacy, and recording consent as considerations for any clinic using these tools.

Privacy and consent

An AI scribe means that a recording or transcript of your pet’s consultation exists somewhere, and that makes privacy a practical question rather than a theoretical one. The RCVS advises that client or animal data should not be disclosed without consent or another justifiable reason. It also urges practices to understand how data are processed and stored, who at the software vendor can access them, and whether the vendor uses data to train AI.

The Veterinary Surgeons Board of South Australia recommends informed consent and appropriate oversight of how data are collected, stored, used, and disclosed. These are examples from named regulators in three jurisdictions. Consent rules, recording rules, and clinic policies differ by location, so you should confirm your own clinic’s practice instead of assuming a particular right applies.

The areas to find out about are:

  • Audio: whether the conversation is stored or processed and then discarded, and how long anything, including the draft, is kept.
  • Storage and access: where information is held, and who can see it, including staff at the software provider.
  • Secondary use: whether your information or your pet’s is used for anything beyond your pet’s care, including training or improving AI systems.

Questions to ask your vet

These work as natural first-person prompts. You do not need to ask all of them at once, and you can ask before the appointment starts.

About the tool

  • “What AI scribing tool are you using, and what does it capture?”
  • “Is the conversation recorded, or is audio processed and then deleted?”

About privacy

  • “Where is the information stored, and who can access it, including the software provider?”
  • “Is my information, or my pet’s, used to train or improve the system, or for anything else?”

About the note

  • “Do you personally review and approve the note, and how do you correct mistakes?”
  • “Can I get a copy of the visit note?”
  • “Does this change anything about how we discuss my pet’s care?”

About choice

  • “Can I decline or ask you to pause the scribe? Will that change how the appointment is handled?”

If you prefer not to use a scribe

Raise the question before the visit begins, not partway through a consultation. Ask whether the clinic offers a process without the scribe and whether choosing it affects appointment timing or how the record is written. Clinics differ in what they can offer, so the answer is specific to your practice. If a clinic cannot tell you clearly where your information goes, how long it is kept, and who checks the note, that is useful information in itself.

AAHA’s guidance encourages owners to ask how the tool works and whether the appointment or communication changes. Keep in mind that a scribe is a documentation aid. Your vet’s observations, judgment, and explanations are what shape your pet’s care.
