Five Essential Tips for New Cat Owners: Setting Your Feline Friend Up for Success

Five practical tips for first-time cat owners: set up the home, book a first vet visit, feed a complete diet, direct scratching, and keep daily care steady.

A new cat settles fastest when its home, first veterinary visit, food, scratching options and daily routine are in place before it arrives or within its first few days. The five tips below follow that order, with the specific checks and choices that matter most for a first-time owner.

1. Set up a basic, low-stress home before the cat arrives

Cornell Feline Health Center says a new cat should have basic provisions including “a litter box, food, and ideally, a scratching post.” Have these ready on arrival so the cat does not have to search for them in an unfamiliar space.

Essential supplies checklist

  • Food and water dishes, kept clean and placed away from the litter box
  • A litter box, plus one extra box if you have more than one cat (Cornell recommends one box per cat plus one extra)
  • A suitable scratching surface, such as a cat scratching post or pad
  • A cat carrier for the trip to the vet and any later visits
  • Toys and climbing or play options for daily enrichment

Choosing a litter box and litter

Many cats prefer a simple, uncovered box and unscented litter with a fine texture, but individual preferences vary. Compare the options below by how well they fit your cat rather than by any single “best” product.

Choice Options What to watch for
Box style Open or covered Many cats prefer an uncovered box; a covered box can trap odour and may not suit every cat. Observe your cat’s use and adjust.
Litter texture and scent Fine or coarse; scented or unscented Unscented, fine-textured litter is commonly preferred, but cats differ. Avoid strong fragrances in the litter area.
Scratching surface orientation Horizontal or vertical Cornell advises choosing based on the cat’s preference. Note which surfaces the cat already uses and place a post or pad nearby.
Scratching surface material Sisal, cardboard, carpet or other materials Cornell says the cat’s preferred surface should guide the choice rather than what looks best in your home.

2. Book a veterinary visit soon after the cat comes home

Cornell advises having any new cat checked by a veterinarian soon after coming home, and ASPCA guidance recommends a veterinary examination at least yearly. A first visit gives your vet a baseline and a plan.

  1. Request records before the adoption is complete. Ask the shelter or previous caretaker for records of prior vaccinations, nutrition, parasite control and grooming, and bring them to the appointment.
  2. Schedule the first appointment promptly. Do not wait for a problem to appear. Cornell’s guidance is to have the cat checked soon after arrival.
  3. Describe the cat’s background. Share age, health history, lifestyle (indoor or outdoor access, other pets in the home) and any exposure risks.
  4. Ask about vaccines and parasite prevention. Vaccination and preventive decisions depend on the individual cat and on local requirements, so ask your veterinarian what applies to your cat and where you live. Cornell’s overview of feline vaccine benefits and risks can help you prepare questions.

3. Feed a complete diet and change food gradually

Cornell’s guidance on feeding your cat recommends nutritionally complete food formulated for the cat’s life stage. Ask the previous caretaker or shelter what the cat has been eating, and keep feeding that food at first if you can.

  • Check the package for a nutritional adequacy statement that confirms the food is complete for the cat’s life stage.
  • If you change foods, do it gradually over several days rather than all at once, as Cornell advises.
  • Discuss any medical or therapeutic diet with your veterinarian rather than choosing one on your own.
  • Do not give supplements or select a particular brand on the assumption that it is necessary; ask your vet whether any addition is needed.

4. Make good scratching and play behaviour the easy choice

Scratching is normal feline behaviour, and the goal is to direct it rather than stop it. Place a suitable post or pad close to a spot where the cat already scratches, and reward use with attention or treats.
