5 Ways to Help Keep Your Pet Disease-Free

No routine can guarantee a pet stays free of disease, but five everyday habits lower preventable risk and help you catch problems early. Here is what the AVMA recommends and when to call your veterinarian.

No routine, product, or schedule can guarantee that a pet will never become ill. What you can do is lower the risk of preventable illness and catch problems early, when they are usually easier to treat. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) frames prevention the same way in its 2024 Pet Ownership brochure: as ongoing partnership with your veterinarian, not a one-time fix. The five habits below follow that guidance. The specific timing and choices for your animal should always come from your own veterinarian.

Five habits that lower your pet’s risk

1. Schedule regular veterinary checkups

Routine visits give your veterinarian a baseline for your pet’s weight, teeth, heart, skin, and behavior. Over time, that baseline makes it easier to notice a change that matters. The AVMA says checkups help the veterinarian get to know your pet and catch problems early. The brochure does not set one interval for every animal, so ask your veterinarian how often your pet should be seen, and adjust that interval if your pet is very young, older, or managing a chronic condition.

2. Keep vaccinations and parasite prevention current

Vaccines and parasite-control products are among the most common preventive tools, but the right ones depend on the animal. Species, age, health history, where you live, and how much time your pet spends outdoors or around other animals all affect the decision. Follow the plan your veterinarian gives for your pet rather than copying a schedule that worked for a friend’s animal. Keep a written record of doses and due dates, and ask at each visit whether anything has changed.

3. Care for teeth and gums

Dental disease is common in companion animals and is easy to overlook because it develops gradually. The AVMA lists regular veterinary dental care together with at-home care as part of its dental guidance. Ask your veterinarian what home routine is appropriate for your pet, whether that is brushing, dental-specific diets, or chews, and which products are suitable. Do not assume a product is right for your animal because it is sold for pets.

4. Support healthy nutrition and a healthy weight

Diet and body condition influence joint health, diabetes risk, heart health, and how long an animal can stay active. The AVMA advises nutrition and weight management tailored to the individual pet. Ask your veterinarian which food suits your pet’s life stage and health, how much to feed, how many treats are reasonable, and what a healthy weight looks like for your animal. Weigh your pet periodically so that gradual gains are caught early.

5. Provide suitable activity and respond to changes

Exercise and mental stimulation should match your pet’s age, breed, and health. A young working dog and an elderly cat need very different routines. Just as important is noticing change. Shifts in appetite, drinking, urination, energy, sleep, grooming, or behavior can signal a problem. The AVMA advises contacting your veterinarian when health or behavior changes could mean something is wrong, and seeking timely treatment rather than waiting to see whether the change passes.

Species and individual differences

These habits apply to dogs, cats, and other companion animals, but the details differ widely. Birds, reptiles, fish, and small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs often have needs that a general practice may not address. Where your pet is a species with specialized needs, look for a veterinarian with experience in that animal. Do not give any medication, select a vaccine, or apply a parasite product without veterinary advice for that specific pet.

Warning signs that need prompt veterinary attention

Preventive care lowers risk, but it does not replace urgent care. Contact your veterinarian promptly if you notice any of the following:

Keep a first-aid kit and emergency plan ready

The AVMA’s brochure advises keeping a pet first-aid kit and having first-aid procedures handy. A kit cannot prevent disease, and it is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it helps you respond calmly while you arrange treatment. Keep your veterinarian’s number, the number of an after-hours emergency clinic, and the poison-control contact your area recommends in one place where everyone in the household can find it.

The AVMA’s 2024 brochure puts the principle plainly: “Partner with your veterinarian to support your pet’s long-term health and wellbeing.” Treat that partnership as the foundation for the five habits above.
