Adopting a senior or special-needs cat changed one British household permanently, though not in the way a rescue listing might suggest. In a Catster feature updated August 19, 2026, Georgie Lardner-Price describes how a memorial adoption led to a bonded pair of rescued cats, two cats with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and a cat with a wound that did not heal. The account is one family’s experience. It is not a survey of adopters and not a veterinary guide, but it shows what this kind of adoption asks of a household and what it can give back.
Five cats in one household at a glance
The family, who live in Stroud, United Kingdom, shared their rescue cats online for more than seven years. The table below lists each cat in the order they joined the household, using the conditions and outcomes the author reports.
| Cat | How they came to the family | Conditions the author describes | Outcome as reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Herbie | Adopted at 16 after a Cats Protection profile caught the author’s attention | Became rapidly ill after adoption; no specific diagnosis given in the feature | Died five months after adoption |
| Toby | Rescued by the RSPCA with his bonded partner Quinton after a welfare removal from a multi-cat household | Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), also called feline cutaneous asthenia; itchy skin episodes the author associates with mast-cell activation | Surgeries are recounted; current health not stated in the feature |
| Quinton | Rescued by the RSPCA with Toby | Abscesses and dental problems, leading to removal of all his teeth; later oral squamous cell carcinoma | Lost his sight, had difficulty eating, and died after a difficult illness |
| Leo | Adopted after Quinton’s death | EDS; sensitive digestion | Gradually became Toby’s companion; later health not stated in the feature |
| Chino | Taken in during early 2022 | Severe EDS and a serious wound that did not heal despite veterinary treatment | Surgeries are recounted; died ten months after joining the household |
How it began: a memorial adoption
The family’s path into senior and special-needs rescue started with Herbie, a sixteen-year-old cat whose profile on the Cats Protection website prompted the author to adopt him. He was playful and brought joy to the home, but he became ill quickly and died five months after the adoption. The family decided to adopt a senior or special-needs cat in his memory. That decision set the pattern for everything that followed: the household chose animals whose age or medical history made them harder to place.
Taking in a bonded pair with medical needs and trauma
Toby and Quinton were found together during a welfare removal from a multi-cat household and were rescued by the RSPCA. Lardner-Price says both needed medical attention and had experienced trauma. Quinton’s abscesses and dental problems ended with the removal of all his teeth. Trust took time: the author reports that it took weeks before the cats approached the family and accepted affection. For households considering a rescued pair, that timeline is the feature’s most concrete practical detail, and it is worth planning for before the cats arrive.

Living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and different needs
Toby was diagnosed with feline cutaneous asthenia, also called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The author describes it as a genetic collagen defect associated with fragile skin and joint hypermobility, and says it has no cure. Her account of the family’s approach focuses on preventing injuries and keeping the home safe, rather than on treatment. Toby’s episodes of itchy skin are something the author associates with mast-cell activation, which is her interpretation rather than a diagnosis documented in the feature.
Two cats with the same diagnosis, different needs
Leo also has EDS, but the author stresses that he and Toby did not need the same care. Leo’s sensitive digestion became a separate concern from Toby’s skin, so a shared diagnosis did not mean a shared routine. Households with more than one medically fragile animal should expect to manage each cat as an individual, with separate notes on symptoms, diet, and when to call the vet.

Why the family started sharing their story
The Tummy and Gummy social account began when friends suggested Toby should have an Instagram account. The name refers to Quinton’s toothless grin and Toby’s enjoyment of tummy rubs. What started as a way to share the cats’ personalities became the family’s main way of talking about special-needs adoption, and the author connects that advocacy directly to the cats’ stories and to the joy and loss they brought.
Quinton’s illness and Toby’s grief
Quinton was later diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma. The author describes his loss of sight, his difficulty eating, and his death. She also says Toby searched for Quinton and cried for him afterward. The family then adopted Leo, who gradually became Toby’s companion. The feature presents this sequence as a reason the household kept taking in cats, rather than as a reason to stop.

Chino and the wound that would not heal
In early 2022 the family took in Chino, who the author describes as having severe EDS and a serious wound that did not heal despite veterinary treatment. The account recounts surgeries for both Toby and Chino. Chino died ten months after joining the household. The author does not present Chino’s care as a model for other cats, and the details of his treatment are hers alone.
What the adoption changed
The feature’s central message is that adopting an animal in need can bring deep joy while also requiring commitment, learning, care, and resilience through illness and grief. The author closes with a direct appeal, and because the appeal comes from a family that has buried several of its cats, it reads differently from a generic call to adopt:

“I implore anyone who can to open their heart and home to an animal in need; it isn’t something you will ever regret.”
Lardner-Price wrote this after a story that includes bereavement and intensive veterinary care, so the sentiment reflects the whole account, not only its happy moments.

What this account does and does not show
- It is a first-person account by one adopter, in one household, in the United Kingdom. It does not measure how common senior-cat adoption is, how long older cats wait for homes, or what adoption typically does for adopters or cats.
- It contains no named population statistic, study figure, or quotation from a veterinary expert, regulator, or standards body.
- The diagnoses and treatments are the author’s descriptions. Her statement that EDS has no cure and her account of injury prevention are reported in a personal feature, not in veterinary guidance.
- Outcomes are not uniform. Herbie died within months, Quinton and Chino died after long illnesses, and the feature does not state the current health of Toby or Leo.
Questions to settle before adopting a senior or special-needs cat
The household’s experience suggests the following questions are worth working through before a senior or medically complex cat comes home. Veterinary advice on any specific condition should come from a vet who examines the animal, not from a personal account.
- Ask the rescue for the cat’s full medical and behavioural history, including any diagnoses still being investigated.
- Find out whether the cat is part of a bonded pair, and plan for a slow introduction if you are taking in more than one animal.
- Estimate the veterinary costs and time you can commit, including follow-up visits and possible surgery.
- Prepare a home that reduces injury risk, especially for cats with fragile skin or joint problems.
- Choose a vet before the cat arrives, and ask them to review any condition the rescue has flagged.
- Be prepared for grief. The family’s account shows that loss is part of this kind of adoption, and the household kept going because the cats were worth it.
The feature’s message is not that senior or special-needs adoption is easy or always ends well. It is that a household willing to learn, pay attention to each animal, and accept loss can give older cats a secure home, and that the family found the experience worth repeating.
